Forty years after his death, Orson Welles is still telling stories. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the legendary voice of the director of Citizen Kane will be heard in a new project, this time as a digital tour guide.
Open the app, select a point on the map, and listen. Are you standing in a dingy Hollywood alleyway? On Broadway in the heart of New York City? Every location becomes an opportunity to discover the behind-the-scenes history of cinema and TV series from a new perspective.
In a bold initiative, the StoryRabbit app now offers its users the chance to discover this world through the voice of one of the most iconic directors in the history of cinema, Orson Welles.
"No matter where you are, Orson peels back the curtain on the hidden architecture of film, television, history, and culture that surrounds you. What may look ordinary is, in his telling, anything but," reads the press release unveiled by Podnews.
Launched by Treefort Media, in collaboration with Younite.ai, Orson Welles Presents is now available on the app for iOS and Android starting at US$4.99 (RM21) per month. StoryRabbit uses geolocation to enable travellers to hear contextualised audio stories narrated by famous voices, including, now, Welles, recreated with uncanny accuracy from voice archives, with the permission of his estate.
Unlike other AI-based experiences, each script is written, checked, and approved by a team of people. "All narratives are human-curated, authentic, and responsibly produced.' promises Treefort Media, which emphasizes its "ethical' approach to AI.
"Orson was a relentless innovator, who worked effortlessly across multiple platforms during his long and storied career, so bringing his voice into this new medium feels like a continuation of that legacy,' said David Reeder, of Reeder Brand Management, the agency for the Orson Welles Estate
Kelly Garner, founder and CEO of Treefort Media and creator of StoryRabbit, said: "Integrating Orson Welles' voice gives our storytelling unparalleled resonance. Having the opportunity to work with a voice of this caliber is extraordinary. His timeless perspective offers users a unique lens – simultaneously nostalgic and forward-looking – to discover the world as it speaks, revealing incredible true stories."
In addition to Orson Welles, StoryRabbit also features the voice of Dominic Monaghan, the British-Irish actor known for his roles in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and the TV series Lost . – AFP Relaxnews

Zaslav flips Warner plan after US$40bil in lost value

Warner Bros chief executive officer David Zaslav. — Bloomberg NEW YORK: Just three years after arguing that the best way to boost the value of Warner Media and Discovery Inc was to combine their assets, chief executive officer David Zaslav now says that the real key to unlocking their potential worth is to split them apart. The stock has declined about 60% since that merger was completed in April 2022, wiping out some US$40bil from the company's market value. The announcement on Monday will split Warner Bros Discovery Inc into two separately traded public companies, one focused on the fast-growing streaming assets and film studios, and the other which will house the struggling legacy cable TV channels. The decision is just the latest reversal for Zaslav, who has come under fire for multiple missteps in running the parent company of HBO, CNN, TV and film studios and sports broadcasting. The move is also an opportunity, perhaps even a final chance, for Zaslav, 65, to transform Warner Bros into the leading global entertainment company he originally envisioned. 'By operating as two distinct and optimised companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape,' Zaslav said in a statement on Monday. Investors seem unsure whether to buy Zaslav's latest pitch. After an initial spike higher when the news was announced, the stock turned around and the shares closed down 3% on Monday. Representatives for Zaslav said he wasn't available for an interview. The separation is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. Zaslav was the architect of the merger between AT&T Inc's WarnerMedia and Discovery, which he had been running since 2006. The move married WarnerMedia's brands like HBO with the more populist programming at Discovery as Zaslav looked to build a rival to streaming giant Netflix Inc. It also saddled the new company with billions of dollars in debt, an albatross that has continued to weigh on its valuation. — Bloomberg

Human-sized Labubu figure sells for over US$150,000 at Beijing auction

The event held by Yongle International Auction, which traditionally specialises in modern art, as well as jewellery, marked the first ever auction dedicated to Labubu, toothy monster figurines that are mainly sold by China's toy company Pop Mart and have been at the centre of a global frenzy for the past year. The auction offered 48 lots for sale and was attended in person by roughly 200 people, while over a thousand bidders put down offers via Yongle's mobile app, the auction house said. The starting price for all the items started at zero and it eventually raised a total of 3.73 million yuan. The highest grossing item, a mint green, 131cm tall Labubu figure, received several bids to sell for 1.08 million yuan. The auctioneer said it was the only one available in the world. A set of three Labubu sculptures, about 40cm tall and made of PVC material, sold for 510,000 yuan. The set, from a series called 'Three Wise Labubu', was limited to a run of 120 sets in 2017 and another one sold for HK$203,200 (US$25,889.64) at Sotheby's most recent auction in Hong Kong. Labubu was created a decade ago by Hong Kong artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. In 2019, Lung agreed to let them be sold by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company that markets collectable figurines often sold in 'blind boxes'. A buyer of a blind box toy does not know exactly what design they will receive until they open the packaging. The starting price for Labubu blind box toys sold in Pop Mart's stores is around 50 yuan. The character's popularity skyrocketed after Lisa of the Korean pop music group Blackpink was spotted with a Labubu and praised the doll in interviews and online posts. Many celebrities followed. In May, British football star David Beckham shared a photo on Instagram of his Labubu attached to a bag. One Yongle auction bidder, a restaurant owner who only gave her surname as Du, said she had planned to spend a maximum of 20,000 yuan but walked away empty handed as the final prices were too high. 'My child likes it, so every time… Labubu released new products, we will buy one or two items. It is hard to explain its popularity, but it must have moved this generation,' she said. - Reuters

POP MART Founder Wang Ning Now Richest Person In China's Henan Province

The POP MART craze is taking the world by storm! The popularity of these collectable dolls has gone through the roof. The results? Catapulting the wealth of the founder, Wang Ning (王宁). According to reports, the founder and CEO of Pop Mart International Group recently saw an increase in his net worth. As reported on the Forbes website, Wang Ning's net worth recently jumped by US$1.4 billion (approximately RM5.9 billion), and he's now worth US$ 21.7 billion (approximately RM88 billion). With this new net worth, the 38-year-old is now the wealthiest man in Henan, China. Forbes attributes Wang Ning's wealth to the success of his toy company, founded in 2010. The brand, known for its figurine blind boxes, became a publicly listed company in Hong Kong in 2020. POP MART boasts a variety of products from different series, including Dimoo, Skullpanda and Molly. However, its most popular character is Labubu, which debuted under the company in 2019. The Labubu character is the brainchild of Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung (龍家昇), who designed the character in 2015. The artist's partnership with POP MART in 2019 helped popularise the character and the accompanying 'Monsters' line. However, Labubus only became a sought-after collectable after BLACKPINK's Lisa was spotted with a Labubu keychain on her bag, sparking a trend in Southeast and East Asia. POP MART currently operates over 500 stores worldwide, with 100 overseas outlets. In Malaysia, there are seven POP MART outlets, including the largest store in The Exchange TRX. Surprisingly, Wang Ning revealed that the company's overseas business sales could exceed 50% by the end of 2025, surpassing its domestic Chinese sales. This revelation hints at POP MART's growing global popularity. With new collaborations and launches happening every month, it won't be long before Wang Ning's net worth increases again.
