Smriti Mandhana's Maiden Ton Leads India To 97-Run Win Over England In 1st T20I
Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana's graceful maiden T20 International hundred adorned India's smooth 97-run win over England in the opening match in Nottingham on Saturday. The visitors now lead the five-match T20I series 1-0. Mandhana (112, 62 balls) and Harleen Deol (43, 23 balls) added 94 runs for the second wicket as India posted a commanding 210 for five after being invited to bat. Skipper Nat Sciver Brunt (66, 42 balls) waged a lone battle for England, who were limited to 113 all out in 14.5 overs by the on-song Indian bowlers.
For India, debutante left-arm spinner Shree Charani (4/12) was the most successful bowler, as there was nothing much left in England's innings after they lost half of the line-up inside the first 10 overs for a sub-100 score.
Mandhana, who led the team in the absence of injured regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, stole the day with an innings that was a full-fledged display of her style, aggression and ability to play shots around the field.
She gave the Indian innings some early impetus, making 77 runs with a struggling Shafali Varma (20, 22 balls), whose return to top-flight cricket after a gap of eight months was less than satisfactory.
Mandhana was the dominant figure in that alliance off just 8.3 overs.
Shafali's dismissal did not deter Mandhana as the left-hander raised a further 94 runs for the second wicket with an equally aggressive Harleen, who was dropped on 26 by Danny Wyatt-Hodge off off-spinner Alice Capsey near mid-wicket.
Mandhana did not give any such chances to England, and she started off with three boundaries off left-arm spinner Linsey Smith in the fourth over, and hardly took her foot off the accelerator.
Later, she also punished another left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone for two sixes in the seventh over as the Indian innings chugged along.
Mandhana brought up her fifty in 27 balls, and the next 50 came off just 24 balls.
Mandhana soon went past 87, her previous best in T20Is, and touched the three-figure mark for the first time in her career that has 30 fifties.
She reached the coveted milestone in style too, hammering pacer Lauren Bell for two consecutive boundaries.
Her knock is the highest for India in T20Is, surpassing Harmanpreet's 103.
At the other end, Deol relied more on sweeps to fetch boundaries, using the general lack of direction of English bowlers on the day till she fell to Bell, who was England's most successful bowler (3/27).
Mandhana was eventually dismissed by Ecclestone but not before taking India to a position of strength.
England tried to stage a late comeback as Bell removed Richa Ghosh (12) and Jemimah Rodrigues (0) in the 18th over but by then India were already closing in on the 200-run mark.

McCutchen and Reynolds hit game-breaking doubles as Pirates pull away for 9-2 win over Mets
Jun 29, 2025 09:20 AM IST PITTSBURGH — Andrew McCutchen and Bryan Reynolds hit consecutive two-run doubles during a six-run eighth inning Saturday as the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled away for a 9-2 victory over the New York Mets. HT Image The Pirates led 3-2 when Ke'Bryan Hayes singled in a run before McCutchen and Reynols broke open the game. Hayes also had an RBI single in a three-run second that put Pittsburgh ahead 3-1. The game was delayed for 89 minutes during the top of the second with the Mets leading 1-0. The Pirates lifted starter Bailey Falter after the wait. However, the Mets stuck with Paul Blackburn when play resumed and he gave up five straight singles to start the bottom of the second. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza removed Blackburn after the fifth hit. Mendoza didn't stick around much longer, as he was ejected in the fourth by plate umpire Roberto Ortiz for arguing balls and strikes. Braxton Ashcraft relieved Falter and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. The Pirates will try to sweep the three-game series Sunday. The Mets have lost 12 of their last 15 games. McCutchen, Hayes, Joey Bart and Nick Gonzales each had two hits for the Pirates. New York got two hits apiece from Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo. The Mets struck quickly when Francisco Lindor led off the game with a double and scored on Juan Soto's single. They cut their deficit to 3-2 on Nimmo's RBI single in the fifth. The Mets put the leadoff man on base in the eighth, trailing 3-2, but Caleb Ferguson got Tyrone Taylor to hit into a double play and Brett Baty to ground out. McCutchen played in his 2,200th career game and is the active MLB leader. The series concludes Sunday with Mets RHP Frankie Montas making his second start of the season, facing RHP Mike Burrows . FIFA Club World Cup: Chelsea beats 10-man Benfica 4-1 to set up quarterfinal vs Palmeiras
Chelsea scored three times in the second period of extra-time to hand 10-man Benfica a 4-1 defeat in Charlotte in their weather-affected last 16 Club World Cup clash on Saturday as the English side set up a quarterfinal meeting with Brazil's Palmeiras. Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored in a nine-minute spell to take Enzo Maresca's side through after the teams had been forced off the pitch for almost two hours due to a lightning storm. Chelsea had taken the lead through Reece James in the 64th minute and, after the teams returned to the field, Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni was sent off two minutes into injury time. But Angel di Maria scored from the penalty spot three minutes later to take the game into extra-time, from where Chelsea eventually prevailed to set up its meeting with Palmeiras on Friday. 'Very proud, the performance for me was top until 85 minutes when they stopped the game and it started a completely different game,' said Maresca. 'When you are inside for more than one hour, it's not easy, but 1-1 and then we continued to play and the reward was the one that we deserved.' Chelsea captain James showcased his set-piece prowess to give the Premier League side the lead, breaking the deadlock in the 64th minute when he curled home a sublime free kick. The match was halted five minutes from time due to a lightning storm near the Bank of America Stadium, activating the weather protocol and resulting in a break of almost two hours as teams and supporters were moved out of exposed areas. Upon the teams' return, Prestianni was sent off for a second bookable offence seven minutes after the restart, but Benfica was given hope when Di Maria scored from the penalty spot following Malo Gusto's handball. Chelsea, though, made the most of its one-man advantage in extra-time. Nkunku put Chelsea back in front three minutes into the second period when he lifted the ball over Nicolas Otamendi with an astute finish after Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin had blocked Moises Caicedo's initial shot. Six minutes later Neto hit Chelsea's third with a composed finish as he raced in on goal, having been found by Caicedo. Dewsbury-Hall completed the scoring in the 117th minute when he was released into space by Cole Palmer.

Praggnanandhaa and sung the praises of the Chennai Grandmaster after he was signed by Esports Organisation Team Liquid on Saturday. The Norwegian maestro, who is also a part of Team Liquid alongside the USA's Fabiano Caruana, has welcomed the Indian. On X, he wrote, Whole lot of letters in Praggnanandhaa, but no «I» Welcome to the team🤝.' Whole lot of letters in Praggnanandhaa, but no «I» Welcome to the team🤝 — Magnus Carlsen (@MagnusCarlsen) June 28, 2025 The inclusion of Praggnanandhaa in the Team Liquid makes them one of the strongest Esports teams in the chess world. The World No. 2 and arguably the most famous esports athlete in chess — who has promoted this sport in the online world — Nakamura called the Indian a rare gem. Posting a reply to Team Liquid's announcement post on X, Nakamura wrote, 'Pragg is a rare gem in the chess world.' Massive congrats to @rpraggnachess and @TeamLiquid – Pragg is a rare gem in the chess world! — Hikaru Nakamura (@GMHikaru) June 28, 2025 The wave of these signings comes after chess was actively promoted as an Esports, with the traditional board game evolving itself into an online game and getting included in the upcoming Esports World Cup (EWC), set to happen in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Besides Praggnanandhaa, multiple Indian stars have signed contracts with Esports organisations. Arjun Erigaisi was among the first few players in the world to sign such a contract. He signed the deal with Gen.G. Earlier, Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram also signed contracts with the Indian Esports organisation S8UL. So far, Arjun is the only player to have assured himself a spot in the Esports World Cup, which has spots for only 16 players. Both Carlsen and Caruana are also among the 12 grandmasters who have qualified. The others are Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons), Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), Ian Nepomniachtchi (Aurora), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (NAVI), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Team Vitality), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Twisted Minds), Wei Yi (Weibo), Vladislav Artemiev (Team Spirit), and Vladimir Fedoseev. This includes former world champion Ding Liren (LGD), Wesley So (NAVI), Oleksandr Bortnyk (NAVI), Anish Giri (Team Secret) and Daniil Dubov (Team Spirit). The Esports World Cup will be an event where the world's biggest esports clubs compete across 24 of the most popular esports titles. For the first time, the World Cup will also feature chess, which will be played online. The first edition of the Esports World Cup was held in 2024 and saw teams compete over eight weeks. The Esports World Cup 2025 is set to be the largest multi-title esports event in history, which is expected to have at least 2,000 players and 200 teams competing for a combined prize pool of $70 million (approx. Rs 602 crore). Chess was also included as an Esports at the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 in Patna.
