Oil set for second weekly decline as market eyes another OPEC+ output hike

BEIJING/SINGAPORE: Oil prices were on track for a second consecutive weekly decline on Friday, weighed down by expectations of another OPEC+ output hike in July and fresh uncertainty after the latest legal twist kept U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs in place. Brent crude futures slipped 21 cents, or 0.33%, to $63.94 a barrel by 0626 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 22 cents, or 0.36%, to $60.72 a barrel. The Brent July futures contract is due to expire on Friday. Both contracts have fallen 1.3% so far this week. The downward trajectory largely stemmed from the prospect of rising supplies as investors priced in another hike by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, when eight of its members meet on Saturday. "The stage is set for another bumper production increase," Westpac's head of commodity and carbon research, Robert Rennie, said in a note, potentially more than the 411,000 barrels-per-day hike decided on at the previous two meetings. The potential hike comes as the global surplus has widened to 2.2 million bpd, likely necessitating a price adjustment to prompt a supply-side response and restore balance, said JPMorgan analysts in a note. The analysts expect prices to remain within current ranges before easing into the high $50s by year-end. In the U.S., Trump's tariffs were to remain in effect after a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated them on Thursday, reversing a trade court's decision on Wednesday to put an immediate block on the most sweeping of the duties. The block pushed oil prices down more than 1% on Thursday as traders weighed its effects. Analysts said uncertainty would remain as the tariff battles worked through the courts. Oil prices have lost more than 10% since Trump announced his "Liberation Day" tariffs on April 2. On the demand front, recession worries fuelled by the tariff war have clouded the outlook. Adding to U.S.-China trade tension, Washington ordered a broad swathe of companies to stop shipping goods, including ethane and butane, to China without a license and revoked licenses already granted to certain suppliers. Global oil demand improved from the previous week, driven by a rebound in U.S. oil consumption with robust travel over the Memorial Day long weekend, the JPMorgan analysts noted. Still, the monthly expansion in global oil demand is tracking at approximately 400,000 bpd as of May 28, 250,000 bpd below expectations, the analysts said. - Reuters

U.S. stocks advance as Trump eases EU tariff threat

NEW YORK, May 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday, after U.S. President Donald Trump softened his stance on tariff threats toward the European Union, signaling that trade negotiations were regaining momentum. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 740.58 points, or 1.78 percent, to 42,343.65. The S&P 500 added 118.72 points, or 2.05 percent, to 5,921.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 461.96 points, or 2.47 percent, to 19,199.16. All of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with consumer discretionary and technology leading the gainers by rising 3.04 percent and 2.55 percent, respectively. Utilities posted the weakest growth, up by 0.77 percent. Over the weekend, Trump announced he would delay a planned 50 percent tariff on EU imports until July 9, following a request from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The delay came after Trump had previously proposed implementing the levy on June 1. U.S. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC's Squawk Box that he anticipates more trade deals could be finalized this week. Investor optimism was also buoyed by stronger-than-expected U.S. consumer confidence data for May, with hopes for trade resolutions helping lift sentiment. According to The Conference Board, U.S. consumer sentiment improved across all age and income groups, signaling a broad recovery in outlook. On the corporate front, Tesla jumped 6.94 percent after its CEO Elon Musk said he was shifting focus away from political distractions and back to his business ventures. U.S. Steel climbed nearly 2 percent after CNBC reported that Japan's Nippon Steel is close to finalizing its 55-U.S.-dollars-per-share acquisition of the company. The rally marked a strong start to the shortened trading week, as markets reopened following the Memorial Day holiday. The advance was broad-based, with over 90 percent of S&P 500 stocks closing higher, and small-cap stocks also rallied, pushing the Russell 2000 index up 2.48 percent. Tuesday's gains came after a tough week for Wall Street, where all three major indexes -- the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq -- fell more than 2 percent on fears sparked by Trump's initial tariff threats toward the EU. "It seems like the long holiday weekend only built up momentum for today's sharp rebound," said Dann Ryan, managing partner at Sincerus Advisory. "The trade tensions that briefly flared up have already cooled down -- and now it looks like negotiations are moving into the fast lane." U.S. Treasury bonds spearheaded a broader decline in global bond yields on Tuesday, as markets welcomed signs that Japan may take steps to stabilize its bond market, which recently saw long-term government debt yields spike to multi-decade highs. The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield eased back to around 4.94 percent. Attention is now shifting to a busy week of economic data releases, as well as upcoming comments from Federal Reserve officials, who are widely expected to maintain current interest rates, consistent with previous guidance. Meanwhile, Trump's controversial tax bill remains in focus after narrowly clearing the House of Representatives last week. Nvidia rose 3.21 percent following reports that the company is preparing to release a lower-cost AI chip for China, just ahead of its highly anticipated earnings report on Wednesday, one of the most closely watched of the quarter. Other companies set to report this week include Okta, Macy's, and Costco. According to FactSet, over 95 percent of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings this season, with nearly 78 percent exceeding analysts' expectations.

Bursa Malaysia Opens Easier On Lack Of Market-Moving News

At 9.15 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 1.59 points to 1,532.71 from Monday's close of 1,534.30. KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia traded easier during early morning trade, dampened by a lack of market-moving news as traders awaited more clarity from the Trump administration on tariffs, analysts said. In the broader market, gainers led decliners 171 to 146, with 257 counters unchanged, 1,821 untraded and 17 suspended. It noted that Wall Street was closed on Monday in conjunction with Memorial Day, but the US equity futures advanced as investors reacted positively to President Trump's tariff deadline extension on the European Union. 'Besides, given rising geopolitical tension, and amid uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration's stance on tariff, we expect the market to adopt a defensive stance, and the momentum in real estate investment trusts may persist,' it said. Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd in a note today said the market may face further weakness amid continued foreign fund outflows. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said traders were also concerned that a prolonged price war amongst the electric vehicles players to clear inventory will see extended margin compression. Back home, the FBM KLCI closed marginally lower on Monday as foreign selling is suspected to remain prevalent. 'These short term trades by foreign funds would certainly lengthen the consolidation of the benchmark index. For today, we expect the index to trend between the 1,535-1545 range,' he told Bernama.
