Ukrainian forces have struck a rare and prized Russian naval radar system mounted on a vehicle, according to a video released by a Ukrainian military unit.
The footage purportedly shows Ukraine targeting a naval version of the Zaslon radar, which was originally developed for the MiG-31 interceptor aircraft.
Newsweek contacted the Kremlin for comment by email.

Why It Matters
Only a limited number of Russian warships are equipped with the naval variant of the Zaslon radar. The strike, if confirmed, would represent a notable setback for Russia's Navy, which has already sustained significant losses during President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.
It's the first time the system has been struck in the conflict, which began in February 2022, the military unit said.
What To Know
— Хлопці, чому ви 'Заслон' не опублікували? — питають наші оператори.— Бо, кажемо, відео якесь мляве, враження слабке, таке нецікаво …А виявляється,...
The footage was released by Ukraine's Raid 413 Battalion, a unit within the Unmanned Systems Forces, which specializes in drone warfare.
The battalion described the Zaslon as a "unique ship-based radar station" that can detect targets at a distance of up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) and simultaneously track up to 200 objects.
"And, it seems, it has never been hit during the entire war," the unit said in a post on its social media pages.
The video, filmed by a drone, shows the radar being targeted as it is transported along an empty field. The clip doesn't show the aftermath of the strike.
Russian authorities haven't commented on the attack.
Newsweek couldn't independently verify when or where the footage was filmed, but the strike has also been mentioned by Russian military bloggers.
In 2020, Russian media reported that roughly a dozen new warships built mainly for the Pacific Fleet would be fitted with the Zaslon radar systems.
"The ships of the new series planned for construction will receive integrated radar systems 'Zaslon', capable of detecting stealth-technology devices at a distance of 75 km, and simpler targets at a distance of at least 300 km," Russian news outlet Top War reported.
The vessels would be designed for combating enemy surface ships and submarines, provide artillery support for naval landing operations through missile and artillery strikes against enemy vessels at sea and in port, and to patrol designated areas to enforce blockades, the publication said.
What People Are Saying
Ukraine's Raid 413 Battalion, a unit within the Unmanned Systems Forces, said on its social media pages: "This 'Zaslon' will not block anything anymore."
Milinfolive, Russian military blogger on Telegram: "The Ukrainian FPV drone allegedly hit the three-coordinate shipborne multifunctional radar complex "Zaslon", mounted on a wheeled base. The extent of the damage remains unknown.
Judging by the rotation, the vehicle is equipped with an S-band radar, which is part of the complex. In active mode, the range and altitude of target detection are 200 and 30 kilometers, respectively."
What Happens Next
Talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. to potentially end the war have stalled. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters last week that Washington will no longer "fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings."
President Donald Trump has indicated that he plans to meet with Putin later this month.

2 fans died and an officer is in a coma after Champions League celebrations in France

The overnight celebrations were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas. A man in his 20s was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, and the driver has been detained, Paris police said. The circumstances of both are being investigated. A total of 201 people were injured around the capital, four of them seriously, the Paris police chief said. In the Alpine city of Grenoble, a driver ran into pedestrians who had gathered for a PSG celebration, injuring three or four people, the regional prosecutor's office said. It said the driver was detained. The city also saw fans throwing projectiles at firefighters and police using dispersion grenades. Up to 110,000 people were allowed along the iconic, tree-lined Champs-Elysees avenue for a parade. Later, the team will join fans in PSG's home stadium, the Parc des Princes, for a concert and light show and official presentation of the Champions League trophy. PSG arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport airport at around 4:30 p.m. (1430 GMT). Club captain Marquinhos and president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi brandished the Champions League trophy aloft as they got off the plane. A wide swath of central Paris was closed to traffic for the exceptional day. The security measures are also impacting the French Open unfolding nearby. Thousands of police were deployed to keep order, and will employ similar tactics as they did Saturday night, Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told reporters. AP reporters saw tear gas used near the stadium and water cannons used near the Arc de Triomphe to disperse rowdy crowds Saturday. In addition to the injuries and arrests, Nunez said four stores were looted overnight. Firefighters were so busy extinguishing garbage can fires in the middle of celebrations and dealing with other emergencies that the fire hotline was overloaded. By 2 a.m. Sunday, a total of 294 arrests had been made, including 30 people who broke into a shoe shop on the Champs-Élysées. Two cars were set alight close to Parc des Princes, police added. Advertisement At the Place de la Bastille, there were joyous scenes as fans climbed onto the base of the famous column, singing, dancing and letting off flares, while those around them joined in. At one point, motorbikes loudly revved their engines and the crowd cheered as they did laps around the column. There were no police nearby and, by 1 a.m., the atmosphere was upbeat with no tensions and plenty of singing. Nunez blamed the scattered troubles on 'thousands of people who came to commit acts of violence' instead of watching the match. He noted similar unrest on the sidelines of prior celebrations in the capital, such as after France's World Cup win in 2018. John Leicester contributed to this report.

Ukraine will send a delegation to Istanbul for a new round of direct peace talks with Russia on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Sunday, as the conflict rages on with deadly missile strikes and the largest drone assault of the three-year war. Ukrainian negotiators plan to present a roadmap for a long-term peace settlement during the upcoming talks in Istanbul, according to a document reviewed by Reuters. The proposal outlines an initial 30-day ceasefire as a first step, followed by the mutual return of prisoners and the repatriation of Ukrainian children taken to Russian-controlled territory. A meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin would follow. A Ukrainian security official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the drone strike targeted airfields including the Belaya air base in Irkutsk, located over 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from Ukraine. It marks the first confirmed Ukrainian drone activity in the region. What To Know The official stated the long-range operation was planned over a period of 18 months and was personally overseen by President Zelensky. The drones, hidden in containers and transported by truck, reached their targets without being detected, according to Ukrainian sources. Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers—aircraft frequently used by Russia to launch long-range missile attacks on Ukraine—were among the targets hit, according to a source from Ukraine's domestic security agency, the SBU, who spoke to Reuters. The claim has not been independently verified. Igor Kobzev, the governor of Russia's Irkutsk region, confirmed a drone attack on a military unit near the village of Sredny in the Usolsky district but did not refer to any damage involving strategic aviation assets. Meanwhile, Russian forces launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine over the weekend. Ukraine's air force reported the deployment of 472 drones—the largest single-day barrage since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022—alongside seven missiles. A missile strike on a Ukrainian army training facility killed at least 12 service members and wounded over 60, military officials said. What People Are Saying Zelenskyy said on Telegram: "We are doing everything to protect our independence, our state and our people." What Happens Next The talks will take place Monday. The Istanbul meetings represent a rare opportunity for diplomacy as the battlefield remains active on multiple fronts and the humanitarian toll continues to grow.
