Wizz Air advances customer compass plan with new aircraft milestone

Zawya2 days ago

The aircraft offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions
More than decade ago, Wizz Air began to use upcycled waste materials from GenPhoenix for its cabin seats, which reduced over 80 thousand tons of lifecycle emissions
The milestone marks a major step forward in Wizz Air's emissions reduction strategy – Flying Towards Net-Zero
Wizz Air, EMEA's most environmentally sustainable airline, proudly announces that the Airbus A321neo—the latest-generation, most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft available today now comprises two-thirds of its operational fleet.
Out of Wizz Air's total 234 aircraft, 152 are Airbus A321neo and six are A320neo, and one is Airbus A321XLR, meaning over 67% of the fleet is powered by next-generation technology. In line with its ongoing commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability with cutting-edge technologies, Wizz Air aims to operate an all-neo fleet by 2029. The Airbus A321neo will play a critical role in delivering a 7% reduction in Wizz Air's emissions intensity by 2050. The aircraft also offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to previous generation aircraft, alongside a 50% reduction in noise pollution.
Customer First Compass: Enhancing the Passenger Experience
Operating an all-neo aircraft fleet is part of the airline's Customer First Compass Product pillar - its commitment to next-level travel and dedication to operating one of the youngest, safest and fuel-efficient fleets in the industry, as well as using cutting-edge tools in operations.
This €14 billion initiative underscores the airline's dedication to delivering an exceptional travel experience through one of the youngest, safest, most fuel-efficient and quieter fleets in the industry, supported by advanced operational technologies.
Yvonne Moynihan, Corporate and ESG Officer at Wizz Air, said: "Achieving two-thirds fleet modernisation with the A321neo is not just a milestone for Wizz Air – it's a symbol of our commitment to providing most innovative options. The introduction of our Customer First Compass earlier this year marks our dedication to investing in areas that make a meaningful impact for our customers and the planet. The A321neo is central to our strategy, enabling lower emissions while maintaining the affordable fares our customers value.'
Driving Net-Zero Through Fleet Innovation
Fleet renewal is one the main cornerstones of Wizz Air's Flying Towards Net-Zero roadmap, which outlines the role the airline will play in the decarbonisation.
Smart Solutions Across the Supply Chain
In addition to the exterior part of the aircraft, Wizz Air also focuses on interior developments in supply chain. Since 2015, the airline has partnered with Gen Phoenix to integrate upcycled leather offcuts into its cabin seating. These materials, which would otherwise be sent to landfills, are transformed into lightweight, durable seating components that generate up to 80% less carbon emissions and use 87% less water during production[4]. What began with a single A320 aircraft has now scaled to the airline's entire fleet serving approximately 50,000 passengers daily. Through this partnership, GenPhoenix has supplied Wizz Air over 100,000 square meters of material – preventing 16 tons of waste from reaching landfill and reducing 7 300 tons of lifecycle emissions reductions annually.

ECB cuts rates as bets build on a summer pause

The European Central Bank cut interest rates as expected on Thursday and kept all options on the table for its next meetings even as the case grows for a summer pause in its year-long easing cycle. The ECB has now lowered borrowing costs eight times, or by 2 percentage points since last June, seeking to prop up a euro zone economy that was struggling even before erratic U.S. economic and trade policies dealt it further blows. With inflation now safely in line with its 2% target and the cut well-flagged, the focus has shifted to the ECB's message about the path ahead, especially since at 2%, rates are now in the "neutral" range where they neither stimulate nor slow growth. The central bank for the 20 countries that share the euro offered few hints in its statement, however, sticking to its mantra that decisions would be taken meeting-by-meeting and based on incoming data. "The Governing Council is not pre-committing to a particular rate path," the ECB said. "Interest rate decisions will be based on its assessment of the inflation outlook in light of the incoming economic and financial data, the dynamics of underlying inflation and the strength of monetary policy transmission." ECB President Christine Lagarde's 1245 GMT news conference may offer more clues about the months ahead, with the bank's most aggressive easing cycle since the 2008/2009 Global Financial Crisis expected to start winding down. Investors are already pricing in a pause in July, and some conservative policymakers have advocated a break to give the ECB a chance to reassess how exceptional uncertainty and policy upheaval both at home and abroad will shift the outlook. While ECB board member and chief hawk Isabel Schnabel has made explicit calls for a pause, others have been more cautious and Lagarde is likely to stick to language that leaves the ECB's options open, as the outlook is prone to sudden changes. The case for a pause rests on the premise that the short- and medium-term prospects for the currency bloc differ greatly and may require different policy responses. Inflation could dip in the short term - possibly even below the ECB's target - but increased government spending and higher trade barriers may add to price pressures later. The added complication is that monetary policy impacts the economy with a 12-to-18 month lag, so support approved now could be giving help to a bloc that no longer needs it. Investors still see at least one more rate cut later this year, however, and a small chance of another move later on, especially if U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war intensifies. DIVERGENT OUTLOOK Acknowledging near-term weakness, the ECB cut its inflation projection for next year. Trump's tariffs are already damaging activity and will have a lasting impact even if an amicable resolution is found, given the hit to confidence and investment. "A further escalation of trade tensions over the coming months would result in growth and inflation being below the baseline projections," the ECB said. "By contrast, if trade tensions were resolved with a benign outcome, growth and, to a lesser extent, inflation would be higher than in the baseline projections." This sluggish growth, along with lower energy costs and a strong euro, will curb price pressures. Indeed, most economists think inflation could fall below the ECB's 2% target next year, triggering memories of the pre-pandemic decade when price growth persistently undershot 2%, even if projections show it back at target in 2027. Further ahead, the outlook changes significantly. The European Union is likely to retaliate against any permanent U.S. tariffs, raising the cost of international trade. Firms could meanwhile relocate some activity to avoid trade barriers but changes to corporate value chains are also likely to raise costs. Higher European defence spending, particularly by Germany, and the cost of the green transition could add to inflation while a shrinking workforce due to an ageing population will keep wage pressures elevated. Sterling holds its own against stronger dollar, trade optimism lends supports

Sterling ticked higher against the dollar on Thursday, one of the few major currencies to hold its own against the greenback which regained ground after weak U.S. data dragged it lower on Wednesday. The pound was up 0.14% at $1.3574, while against the euro it was up 0.1% at 84.16 pence. Sterling remains a touch away from a more than three-year high hit on May 26, underpinned by ongoing dollar weakness with the pound up over 8% this year. Also helping is the fact the UK is the only country to have struck a trade deal with the U.S and was spared from higher U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs, though analysts question how beneficial those factors are. "The trade deal does matter," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG Group. "You might argue it's not a proper trade deal and that it doesn't solve all the problems, but at least it's a sign that there's a more compelling reason to hold the pound rather than be worrying about the euro," Beauchamp added. The Bank of England (BoE) will meet on June 19 to deliver its next policy decision with market bets firmly on the monetary policy committee (MPC) keeping rates steady. There had been expectations of a further 25 bps cut from the BoE at its June meeting but bets were slashed following weak economic data and a hotter-than-expected inflation read last month. On Tuesday, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said he was sticking with a "gradual and careful" approach to cutting interest rates as global trade policy turmoil increasingly clouds the outlook. Reassurance came on Wednesday with a survey showing Britain's services sector returned to tepid growth last month. (Reporting by Lucy Raitano and Johann M Cherian, Editing by Ed Osmond)
