MALAYSIA needs more skilled talents to meet growing demand in the digital economy, automation and artificial intelligence (AI), says Johor executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
The state housing and local government committee chairman said in order to achieve the goal, the country needed to produce more skilled and semi-skilled workers in technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
'Many still think the TVET path is for those who have failed academically, but it is actually a smart choice for those who know what they want.
'TVET provides an opportunity to generate fast income.
'In fact, there are those who successfully become entrepreneurs two years after completing the training.
'This is a new reality, where skills are being appreciated more than certificates,' Mohd Jafni said in a media statement after launching the TVET and career carnival at Dewan Raya Putra in Kulai.
He said the carnival was a crucial initiative in shaping a future generation that not only would excel academically but also in terms of skills and competency.
'TVET not only equips students with knowledge and skills, but also hands-on industry experience and a wide career path,' he said.
He added that the employability of TVET graduates stood at 90%.
Mohd Jafni said the carnival, which aimed to support the national agenda to promote TVET, had attracted more than 1,000 job-seekers, including students and school-leavers, from all over Johor.
'This is a collaboration with over 25 government agencies and 11 private corporations, aiming to expose youths, particularly Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia candidates and recent graduates, to career and education opportunities in technical fields.
'By connecting them with education providers and industry representatives, we are able to help youths make informed decisions about their future,' he said.
Among the many visitors at the event was SMK Bandar Putra student Chang Rui En, 16, who was sent by her teacher to explore future career possibilities.
'I'm here to explore, and I'm not disappointed.
'I'm especially fascinated by the showcase of the mechanisms of traffic lights, which really gives me new insights into the mechanical field,' she said, expressing hope to see more offerings in the Arts stream at upcoming events.
Nurul Khairah Mohd Yusnizam, 17, was hoping to deepen her understanding of engineering, a field that inspired her through her father who is a mechanical engineer.
'My father encouraged me to come discover what engineering truly involves.
'I'm excited to see so many cutting-edge technologies that I can potentially explore,' said the Science stream student from SMK Bandar Putra 2.
Meanwhile, 40-year-old Kelwanter Kaur was thrilled that her daughter L. Tinusimha made the choice to start in early childhood education during the exhibition.
'We are here to explore options for my daughter and are surprised to find so many opportunities available, most of which are financially accessible to us,' she said.
At the carnival, there were exhibitions, hands-on demonstrations and interactive sessions in fields such as engineering, computing and virtual reality.

KPWKM continues to empower women in digital economy through Wanita Gig@BIT 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) continues its efforts to empower women in the digital economy through the Wanita Gig and Business In Technology (Gig@BIT) 2025 programme. Its minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said that 350 people participated in the second initiative of the Women's Development Department (JPW), under the KPWKM, this year, which provides digital economic opportunities for women while building digital resilience to face the challenges of the modern world. 'This programme aims to provide greater access in sectors such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), artificial intelligence (AI), green technology, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as to provide knowledge and awareness of cybersecurity,' she said while officiating the Wanita Gig@BIT 2025 here today. Also present were the KPWKM secretary-general Datuk Dr Maziah Che Yusoff and JPW director-general Hanani Sapit. Nancy said programmes like Wanita Gig@BIT, the Income Generation Skills Programme (KIRANA), Iron Women, and Wanita Bangkit Bersasar focus on providing access to training and capacity building or 'upskilling and reskilling' for women to regain a strong foothold in the job market, particularly in the digital and entrepreneurship sectors. She said it is also in line with the National Women's Policy and the 2025-2030 Action Plan launched as a direction to empower women in terms of economy, leadership and social protection. Also taking place at the event was the symbolic launch of Maxis eKelas Usahawan@JPW, which is the implementation of a supplementary programme with the ministry's strategic partners. At a press conference, Nancy said her ministry is still gathering feedback regarding the Senior Citizens Bill to protect the interests of that group before it is presented in Parliament. 'If everything is okay, we will present it to the cabinet, and then we will send it to the AG (Attorney General),' she said, adding that the process needs to consider the latest developments regarding the elderly in the country and around the world to identify the types of development needed, especially in terms of infrastructure.

Aerospace, aviation booths prove a crowd puller at National TVET Day

MELAKA: The aerospace and aviation booths have become a crowd puller at the 2025 National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Day celebration, which kicked off yesterday. Over 20 booths related to the field attracted interest from various groups, including individuals without backgrounds in science, engineering, or technology, during the three-day programme held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) here. Visitor Iqbal Ahmad Shukri, 20, said the booths provided insightful information and exposure, enhancing public understanding of TVET and showcasing available pathways to anyone interested in exploring them. The Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergraduate majoring in Islamic Finance and Banking said despite his non-technical field of study, the variety of booths at the event helped him gain a deeper appreciation for the development and impact of technology, especially in the aviation sector. 'For example, the booth featuring flight simulation provided us with a hands-on experience that ignited our interest in aviation. It not only informed us how to become pilots but also highlighted other aviation-related careers that many may never have considered,' he told Bernama. His friend, Muhammad Ikmal Tamimi Jamaludin, 21, said such programmes enhance his learning as a Technology Management student. 'Here, I can see the direction and potential of my course. More importantly, I now better understand what I've been learning, as my course includes subjects like electrical studies, information technology, and engineering – all of which are closely related to TVET,' he said. Admal Aviation College's Student Recruitment Officer, Mohammad Rizal Zalkaply, said large-scale programmes like this could create more opportunities for students, especially SPM school leavers, to explore further education in fields that are often less popular. 'Many want to enter into aviation but lack access to information and are often concerned about the costs involved in pursuing such studies. However, programmes like this provide an excellent platform to raise awareness among students about opportunities they may not have been previously aware of. 'For us exhibitors, this is also a great opportunity to share information about the many pathways available through TVET-related courses,' he added.
