Powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake felt strongly in Rhodes and Turkey

Tourists in western Turkey and the Greek islands were shaken awake on Monday night as a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the popular holiday destination of Rhodes.
The quake struck about 29km north of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands near the Turkey border, at around 2.17am (local time) on Tuesday at a depth of 68km, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

One so incensed penned their inaugural Tripadvisor critique to label fellow holidaymakers as "pathetic chavs". This profile, freshly set-up this month apparently as a retort to the dispute, awarded the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel top marks. Their review states: "Don't listen to pathetic chavvy Brits and Poles who bought the cheapest 'all Inclusive' package in existence and demanded type of service only the most entitled and uncouth would. It's a fine, charming little place. Close to water, nice food and clean facilities. Thankfully, no British food!". Another commentator also sneaks in a sly jab at Ms Edwards' complaints, asserting the Greek cuisine is scrumptious. They, with apparent sarcasm, praised the way in which the hotel caters for Scottish visitors in their appraisal, posted mere hours after Ms Edwards' grievances hit the headlines, reports the Mirror. The traveller wrote: "Phenomenal hotel, very comfortable and well located for a relaxing holiday, we are regular visitors. Excellent all inclusive food and drink package, they really go out their way to cater for Scottish visitors. "We enjoyed draught Tennant's lager, Irn Bru was on tap (diet and full fat), square sausage on a roll at breakfast, scotch pies and bridies at lunchtime, and there was always a choice of haggis or mince 'n tatties at dinner. Tunnock's tea cakes and shortbread were available all day, along with Scottish Blend tea. The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you. The Greek dishes are also immense, which is a bonus, as Corfu is in Greece." Praise continued on Google Reviews, where most pegged Lido Corfu Sun Hotel with top marks - five stars. One of the recent glowing reviews stated: "The food is delicious. The service is great. We arrived at 4am and at 8am we got a room and wristbands and we could use everything. On the day of departure after adding the key to the transfer itself we could use all the facilities and food. We sincerely recommend." Ms Edwards, a gran from Westerhope, Newcastle, described her holiday as "horrendous" from the moment she and her family arrived, including her two cousins, second cousin, and daughter. TUI responded to the fiasco by offering the guests €120 in holiday vouchers, with a spokesperson expressing their regret: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Ms Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Ms Edwards to come to a resolution."

Tourist ‘ate' passport biometric data and attacked airport official, court hears
A TOURIST TORE out and devoured the biometric data page of his passport after assaulting a Dublin Airport official verifying his identity, a court was told. Palestinian national Hasan Alshaer, 27, with no stated address, was charged with assaulting a customs official at Terminal 1 and an offence under the Immigration Act for failing to produce a passport or document establishing his identity. He appeared at Dublin District Court today following his arrest at 5pm on Tuesday. Court Garda Sergeant Niall Murphy told Judge John King that the allegation was Mr Alshaer presented to an immigration control officer. 'He tried to run away from her taking his passport with him; when she chased after him, judge, it is alleged he struck at her, causing her to fall, he tore out a page of the travel document he was carrying and then ate the page with the biometric data on it.' The sergeant contended that the accused was a flight risk and objected to his bail. Defence barrister Paddy Flynn said his client had money and could stay in a hotel. Mr Flynn said the accused came to Ireland as a tourist and gardaí had his Palestinian passport. Advertisement The sergeant countered that the passport was 'no use' because it cannot be verified properly now. The defence said the man had a second Greek passport, but the State contended that compounded his problem because gardai could not verify who he was. The defence said Mr Alsher had lived in Germany and Greece for five years. Judge King said, 'There is a serious problem here. He arrives in this country, sees immigration, runs, and then tears a page out of his passport, and this page has his biometric data on it, it is alleged. That is a huge problem for him'. Mr Flynn said he was instructed that the man had a residential permit. However, the judge suggested a fingerprint check with Interpol could assist but noted that it could take some time. Sergeant Murphy said that would not be resolved that day, and it was unlikely that the State would now accept any documentary evidence provided by the accused. He added that he did not present a visa or any authority to enter the country on top of allegedly destroying the travel document he initially presented to customs officers. Mr Alsher, who has yet to enter a plea, listened to the proceedings with the aid of an interpreter and remained silent during the hearing, He postponed his bail application. Judge King remanded him in custody to appear again on Friday.

The hotel said the beach is "approximately 300 meters away, accessible via a path that is clearly described", and that it "hosts three weekly evening events by the pool ". But it was the food and drink that most riled the bee in Susan's bonnet. She said: "On a morning you could have toast, a hard-boiled egg, or something in sauce. "For breakfast there was mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. There was no hot bacon or sausage. "We got chips one day. The 69-year-old has to be careful with what she eats, as she has a condition called ulcerative colitis - a long-term inflammatory bowel disease. Makis said Susan's pre-occupation with poking holes in the services "clearly indicated that she was focused on securing compensation, rather than enjoying her holiday". Hotel staff made "consistent and respectful efforts to accommodate her", he said. Makis added: "Targeting a hotel with excellent ratings (8+/10 on and 4.3/5 on Google) and many loyal, returning guests, based solely on questionable accusations, is both unfair and damaging." After receiving Susan's complaint, a TUI UK & I spokesperson said: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. "We have been in touch directly with Mrs Edwards to come to a resolution." The travel company offered her £100 in holiday vouchers - but Susan claims some people were offered more after complaining, and so declined the olive branch.
