From toddlers to delivery riders: UAE sets world record with largest handprint flag

Khaleej Times22-05-2025

At just three months old, Muhammad Mustafa Imran may not understand the significance of what he was part of, but one day, he surely will. Cradled in his fathers arms, his tiny palm was slowly pressed onto a sheet that would later become part of something historic — the largest UAE flag made entirely of handprints.
His parents say it was their way of showing love for the UAE and creating a beautiful memory for their son to cherish as he grows up.
One day, Muhammad will proudly say that he was part of a world record. His handprint, among thousands of others, is now on a massive flag displayed at the Pakistan Auditorium in Dubai. 'He may be small now, but his hand has already left a big mark,' said his father.

The massive artwork, which has now officially entered the Guinness World Records, was created using 24,514 handprints collected from people of over 100 nationalities.
"The idea behind the project was simple yet powerful: 'unity in diversity'. From schoolchildren to delivery riders, and from labourers to community members of all ages and backgrounds, people came together to show their love and appreciation for the UAE,' said Khalid Imtiaz, Board member, Pakistan Association.
The journey began on April 13 in Al Quoz, and with over 39 sessions, the flag was completed. 'Volunteers travelled across the country — Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain — collecting handprints from schools, labour camps, and community centres,' said Imtiaz.
The pieces were then carefully joined to create one giant UAE flag. 'Hands in hands are the hands of unity,' said Imtiaz, adding that the project was a community gift to the UAE during its Year of Community.
'This country has given so much to us. Leaving a handprint is a small way of saying thank you,' said Imtiaz.
Abdul Wahid, a Pakistani delivery rider based in Dubai, was one of the many residents who proudly added his handprint to the record-breaking UAE flag. 'This country has given me a chance to work and support my family back home. When I was told I could be part of something that shows my love for the UAE, I didn't think twice. Leaving my handprint felt like saying thank you with my own hands.'
The project ended with a celebration where people admired the flag and felt a deep sense of connection. 'One flag, one message: unity in diversity,' said imtiaz.

TwitchCon 10th anniversary brings new products and language expansion

New features unveiled at TwitchCon Rotterdam focus on enhancing the mobile experience, expanding monetisation for streamers, and launching right-to-left Arabic support. Dubai — Twitch — a subsidiary of Inc. — has marked a decade of TwitchCon with a celebration in Rotterdam. The interactive live streaming service for content spanning gaming, entertainment, sports, music, and more unveiled a suite of new features designed to enhance how communities connect, streamers grow, and fans engage across the globe. The company announced the upcoming launch of right-to-left Arabic language support, opening new doors for Arabic-speaking streamers and viewers in the Middle East and North Africa and beyond. In 2024, Twitch saw a +24% YoY increase in content watch time in the UAE – contributing to the livestreaming service's broader momentum across MENA. Viewers across MENA spent 209 Million+ hours watching content on Twitch in 2024, a clear sign of the region's surging demand for livestreamed entertainment. The Twitch community is composed primarily of Gen Z and Millennials, and nearly 70% of Twitch viewers are between the ages of 18 and 34 and with 105M+ average monthly visitors. Over 2.5 million people tune in to Twitch at any given moment, broadcasting content in 35 languages worldwide. 'TwitchCon is our largest annual IRL gathering, bringing together our global community of streamers, viewers, and brands in a powerful way,' said Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch. 'This weekend in Rotterdam is a celebration of creativity, connection, and fun. We're introducing new tools and features to help streamers grow, including ones tailored to the MENA region. We've seen strong momentum around gaming and esports, plus a rising demand for new and existing audiences. We're excited to keep building in MENA, because when streamers thrive, so do the communities around them.' TwitchCon Rotterdam kicked off its tenth anniversary celebrations, with another major event planned for San Diego later this year. During the keynote, Twitch shared updates across mobile innovation, monetisation, community tools, and streamers' support. Key Highlights from TwitchCon Rotterdam include: Twitch will launch right-to-left Arabic on Twitch. Arabic is one of the most spoken languages in the world, and this update will open the door for even more people to join in on Twitch and build community here. Twitch will have more to share this summer. To get streams looking better on smaller devices, Twitch is rolling out vertical streaming. The new vertical layout makes it easier for viewers to participate in events like Hype Trains and support streamers by subbing, gifting, and cheering while watching streams in full screen. Twitch is also adding the ability to stream in dual format as part of this update—meaning Creators can go live in both horizontal and vertical formats at the same time. Twitch will be testing dual-format streaming and the new vertical theatre with a small number of channels this summer before slowly expanding to more users later this year. Twitch will begin rolling out 2k streaming in Open Beta to all Partners and Affiliates. 2k streams will use a newer HEVC codec that offers higher quality streams with lower bitrates. With Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting technology, stream quality will automatically adjust based on bandwidth, so viewers will see the best version of the streams with no lagging or buffering. Head to Creator Home to sign up to take part in the Open Beta now – some accounts will be granted access immediately to allow streaming directly from TwitchCon in 2k. Twitch is introducing Combos. Combos is about giving viewers more ways to react to streams and express themselves—all while supporting Creators monetarily. The feature allows anyone to support your channel, only takes a handful of Bits to contribute to Combos, and is built around reacting to your moments, which is something Chat already does. Combos start with a single tap, which rallies other viewers to keep the Combo going and unleash bigger and bigger effects. Starting very soon, streamers will be able to run their own gift sub promotions. It could be for a streamer-versary, a Partner-versary, or just because you feel like it. To start, Partners and Affiliates will be given 70 hours of promotional time to use in up to seven different promotions throughout the year. For now, promotions will be limited to 35% off bundles of 5+ gift subs, but Twitch is exploring other promotions types as well. Twitch is making reaching Affiliate status more achievable. Creators can find the updated Affiliate requirements in the Creator Dashboard or on the Affiliate help page. For streamers who aren't Affiliates, Twitch just made an update this week to allow access to money made from streaming before reaching the payout threshold. As lives get busier, viewers aren't always able to tune in for longer streams, but they will always have a few minutes to catch up on what they've missed in the Clips feed. So, Twitch is focused on making Clips more engaging by adding comments and reactions. Twitch is also working on making it easier to create and share these Clips with recent updates like a less disruptive clipping flow, a first-party clip chat command, and upcoming experiments that help streamers draft Clips they can come back to review, edit, and publish after a stream. Additionally, watching Clips contributes to viewer's Watch Streaks. Twitch is also rolling out rewind. Viewers can rewind a stream to the part they missed, then resume the stream and join the action in real time. Twitch will be testing with a small number of viewers later this summer to help refine rewind. As part of improving the mobile experience, Twitch has simplified the process for starting and managing a Shared Chat on mobile. This will enable anyone—but especially IRL streamers—to collaborate more easily on the go. This update will be rolled out to all streamers next month. Twitch is bringing mobile Mod View to the Android App. Mod View on mobile gives Mods easier access to their most important tools, designed for a smaller screen experience. This update is rolling out to the Twitch Android app on Monday. Twitch is launching the Twitch Moderators Club. Mods help protect their favourite communities, but Mods should also have a space that's all theirs. Similar to our Unity Guilds and Creator Clubs, the Twitch Moderators Club is meant to help foster connection and community. This is a new private Discord space for Mods where they can connect, share ideas, and access educational workshops.

EXCLUSIVE: Inside Wynn Resorts' Las Vegas-style UAE expansion

The much-anticipated Wynn Al Marjan resort is well on its way to becoming the UAE's first integrated gaming resort, extending the experience to the Middle East and beyond. With construction currently 60 per cent complete, the resort is scheduled to open its doors to the public in early 2027. Arabian Business was among the first publications granted access to insights into Wynn's operations in Las Vegas, to understand how this vast enterprise will be translated 8,000 miles away in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Walking into the Wynn Las Vegas, the opulence and sheer scale is unmistakable – in fact, it is record-breaking, with the hotel being one of the biggest globally. The 50,000 sq. ft. property – encompassing both the Wynn and Encore resort, although different, seamlessly operates as one with a total of 4,500 rooms. The floral (Wynn) or butterfly (Encore) detailed floors hear the steps of thousands of people during the course of the day, from hotel guests to casino players to restaurant visitors and the general public – the grounds are always busy. With a resort of this scale housing thousands of rooms, several restaurants, bars, clubs, a golf course, casinos, swimming pools, luxury stores and more – operations needs to run with the precision of a well-oiled machine – undoubtedly, this takes a big and well-trained team across several departments. A similar operation is expected to translate to Ras Al Khaimah to run the first-of-its-kind concept in the Middle East, also mirroring a scale that is uncommon in the region. Wynn Al Marjan will house 1,500 rooms and the property will span over 60 hectares. From scents, lights and carpets down to the most minuscule elements – almost every corner of the hotel has been designed by Todd-Avery Lenahan, President & Chief Creative Officer of Wynn Design & Development – with every element picked to serve a purpose. The same attention to detail, intricacy (if not more) and process will be applied to Wynn Al Marjan, which Lenahan describes as 'something entirely distinctive for this region.' Wynn's staffing for success Part of the integrated leadership team will also be Max Topainer, former COO of Wynn Las Vegas, who is relocating to Ras Al Khaimah to take on the role of President for Wynn Al Marjan Island – a move symbolic of the global weight being thrown behind the project. And he's not coming alone. A wave of professionals from Wynn properties around the world are already preparing for the transition, with as many as 200 team members expected to move to Ras Al Khaimah within six months of the opening. The full team will be assembled on site, allowing ample time to instill Wynn's signature culture into operations – a value system deeply rooted in the brand. Training, cultural immersion and operational readiness are already high on the agenda. 'The nuts and bolts of how you're really going to run things, the decisions need to be made now and they need to make them when they can think about it and be thoughtful and really make the right calls. You don't want to do it six months before you open,' Michael Weaver, Chief Communications and Brand Officer, said during the tour. 'It's early, yes, but on the day it opens, it has to be perfect,' he explained. Wynn Al Marjan has already opened its hiring portal ahead of time. The hiring process is integral to maintaining the company culture standardised across Wynn properties across the world. Regional touch, global standards While Wynn Al Marjan has the same DNA as its Las Vegas sibling – right down to its high-count bedsheets, floral arrangements and 'Wynn at Home' amenities – it is being designed as an experience that speaks to the region's culture and guest expectations. From the gaming areas to the restaurants, shows and several other offerings across the hotel – the RAK integrated gaming resort will have similar experiences but elevated and catered to the region. 'This is our most culturally responsive room and suite design that we have ever done. We thought a great deal about personal modesty, religious principles and values and even the way people from the Middle East behave and conduct themselves in a hotel room differently than a Westerner or European would,' Lenahan said. Designing for the UAE's cultural context was non-negotiable. Certain suites will be designed in a way where a husband and wife can enjoy their stay without the woman ever being seen, even during room service delivery – a detail crafted to offer ultimate discretion. As seen in the first looks revealed by Wynn last month, the resort's King rooms are designed with distinctive entry vestibules which separate the sleeping quarters from the corridor – a contrast as compared to contemporary resort layouts. The interiors are heavily inspired by regional elements including the artistic and cultural heritage featuring arched forms, layered textures and reflective surfaces. Wynn Al Marjan will also debut a completely separate spa experience for men and women, with no interaction between the spaces, while still offering the same holistic wellness philosophy. The design ethos continues outdoors, with 12 pools including adult-only, family, and children's zones — but no gaming areas by the water, unlike in Las Vegas. Gaming: Separate and regulated While gaming has made headlines, Wynn is taking a nuanced approach. The gaming area will be physically separated from the rest of the resort. Visitors can access every other part of the property without ever seeing a gaming floor. Gaming regulations will be determined by local authorities. The General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority, established by Federal Decree Law and headquartered in Abu Dhabi, is currently shaping the oversight structure. Entertainment-wise, it was revealed that a custom-made show, currently under development will also premiere exclusively at Al Marjan. Details remain tightly under wraps for now. In true Wynn fashion, no detail is spared. In Las Vegas, the scale of operations is immense – up to 14,000 pieces of bread is baked daily, featuring over 200 varieties, while seasonal ingredients like Japanese sweet peas and fresh produce from France are featured year-round. The resort also houses 10,000 flowers refreshed every four weeks, and 800 orchids, all contributing to its immersive floral identity. Each resort features a signature scent, in similar fashion the Al Marjan signature scent will be created. While Wynn is globally known for motifs like flowers (Wynn) and butterflies (Encore), Al Marjan is set to have a dedicated motif reflecting culture and heritage that will be featured in various elements across the resort. The resort will feature several pieces of art, similar to its Las Vegas counterpart – carefully sourced by Lenahan and the team from around the world. During its opening, Wynn Al Marjan could potentially feature artwork loaned from other global Wynn locations. 'We have a major art story that we will be unveiling as we approach the opening, there will be such extraordinary riches artistically around this property – from incredible antiquity all the way to major contemporary works coming from all over the world that will find homes throughout this property,' Lenahan excitedly revealed. Several exciting developments are in the works, however, details are currently under wraps and will be revealed at a later date. One thing was made clear – what Wynn Al Marjan is set to offer in the region is unlike anything ever done before – the scale will be immense, the details will be intricate and the impact will be immediate.

Dubai retains global top spot for attracting greenfield FDI projects in cultural and creative industries in 2024

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: (Dubai Culture) Dubai has maintained its first place as the world's leading destination for greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) in the cultural and creative industries (CCI), topping the Financial Times' fDi Markets ranking for the third consecutive year. The 2024 report, which assessed 233 cities under the 'Creative Industries Cluster' classification, placed Dubai ahead of global hubs such as London and Singapore. During the year, the emirate attracted 971 CCI projects an 8% increase from 2023 bringing in AED 18.86 billion in capital inflows, up nearly 60% from 2023, and generating 23,517 new jobs, a 9% year-on-year rise. All major CCI subsectors saw stronger performance, with notable growth in advertising and PR, film and media production, gaming, education, and advanced software design. According to the Dubai FDI Monitor, greenfield, wholly-owned ventures made up 76.5% of all projects, while new forms of investment represented 15.4%, reinvestment 5.6%, and mergers & acquisitions (2.4%). Data from the Dubai FDI Monitor and the Dubai Framework for Cultural Statistics show that the United States accounted for the largest share of capital inflows in 2024, at 23.2%, followed by India (13.4%), the United Kingdom (9.4%), Switzerland (7.6%), and Saudi Arabia (4.8%). India led in both the number of projects (18.8%) and jobs (18.5%), while the UK, US, Germany, Italy, and France also featured prominently across both metrics. Investor confidence continues to be driven by Dubai's pro-business reforms, including Executive Council Resolution 11 of 2025, which enables free zone businesses to operate onshore, expanding commercial flexibility. The city's Zero Government Bureaucracy programme is also reducing red tape across more than 2,000 federal procedures. Combined with strong intellectual property protections and advanced digital infrastructure, these initiatives have helped establish a regulatory framework marked by efficiency, transparency, and ease of doing business. Insights from the 'Creative Dubai: Navigating Tomorrow's Creative Landscape' report illustrate how this ecosystem is scaling with demand, pinpointing investment opportunity hotspots in design, immersive media and AI-driven production. Dubai continues to offer investors access to top-tier talent, competitive setup costs, and strategic connectivity. The 2024 FDI results underscore the city's rise as a global hub for innovation and one of the world's most attractive environments for creative enterprise. *Source: AETOSWire
