What's open and what's closed in Sweden on May 1st?
May 1st is a public holiday in Sweden, where Swedes have a day off in celebration of the workers' movement. How are shops, Systembolaget and public transport affected?

There is no blanket legal requirement on most shops to close for National Day in Sweden and when it comes to supermarkets and grocery shops, the chances are that they will be open as usual, particularly if you live in a city, although possibly with slightly reduced opening hours.
Smaller shops may be closed, and some of them may choose to take Friday, May 2nd off as a klämdag or 'squeeze day' to give themselves a long weekend.
The exception is the state-owned alcohol chain Systembolaget, which always closes on public holidays or so-called 'red days', meaning it will also be closed on May 1st.
Libraries are often closed on May 1st, so it's worth making other plans if you were planning on catching up with some coursework or taking your kids to the nearest one to keep them occupied.

As far as tourist attractions go, these will probably be open, but it's worth checking to make sure.
In Stockholm, popular tourist attractions such as the Vasa museum and Abba museum will be open as normal.
Skansen will also be open, although it won't be hosting any particular May 1st events – Valborg on April 30th is a bigger celebration for the open-air museum.
As with other public holidays, public transport in Swedish towns and cities may operate on a reduced schedule on May 1st – often on the same schedule as regular Sundays.
There are likely to be diversions on bus routes due to May 1st parades, so check any journeys in advance and plan ahead.

Sweden steps up rules against Russia's Baltic 'shadow fleet'
Sweden on Saturday announced new rules upping checks on foreign vessels in the Baltic from July 1, reinforcing a crackdown on Russia's "shadow fleet" of tankers deployed to circumvent sanctions on its oil trade. The Swedish government said in a statement that the new rules "reinforce checks on foreign vessels by requiring insurance information". It said the effort "aims to fight against this fleet and, in so doing, improve maritime safety and environmental protection". The Swedish coast guard and maritime authorities will be tasked with scrutinising insurance details not only of ships docking in Swedish ports, "but also those crossing Swedish territorial waters, or its exclusive economic zone", which extends some 200 nautical miles from shore. Sweden and Finland -- both of whom recently joined NATO -- are alert to Baltic Sea incidents impacting energy and communication infrastructure, after several instances of damage in late 2024. Advertisement "We are seeing a growing number of concerning incidents in the Baltic Sea, which requires... us to prepare for the worst," Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in Saturday's statement. He added that information gleaned under the new rules checking vessels would be shared with allies and could be added to databases used for sanctions enforcement. The European Union last week adopted a 17th sanctions package against Russia that targets nearly 200 vessels in the "shadow fleet".

Stockholm Marathon is set to take place on May 31st. Over 20,000 participants from more than 100 countries will be running through most of the city centre, closing roads and diverting public transport. Here are the details. According to local transport company SL, bus lines in the city will be affected from around 8am to 8.30pm on Saturday, despite the run not starting until noon. A number of bus routes will be diverted and some stops will not be in use during the day. Where does the route go? Runners will pass through Östermalm, Vasastan, Kungsholmen, Norrmalm, Djurgården, Gamla Stan and Södermalm. You can see a full map of the route on the Stockholm Marathon website. Which bus lines are affected? The following routes will be affected: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 50, 53, 54, 55, 57, 61, 65, 66, 67, 69, 71T, 74, 76, 515, 639, 670, 676, 25B and 25E. Some routes are completely cancelled during the day, while others are split in half or will skip some stops. Make sure to search your journey on prior to travel. Advertisement What about other forms of transport? Metro lines will be running, with extra trains on the red line between 8am-1pm and 3.30pm-9pm. Bear in mind that they may be busier than usual, especially in the morning as participants make their way to the start line. Commuter boats 80 and 84 will be running as usual, with boat route 82 running with extra services between 11.45am and 5pm. There will be no trams running towards Djurgården between 10am and 7pm. Where can I watch the race? There are a number of different areas where you can watch the race as a spectator. The start area is on Lidingövägen and Valhallavägen, and there will be DJ spots along the course (see map). The six countries with the most participants – Sweden, France, the UK, Germany, Finland and Norway will also all have dedicated DJ stations with music from the respective countries.
