Cava Group Posts Strong Results, But Outlook Holds Back Stock

Yahoo16-05-2025

Cava Group beat first-quarter profit and sales estimates, but its outlook wasn't as strong as some had anticipated.
The Mediterranean restaurant chain kept its same-restaurant sales growth and restaurant-level profit margin unchanged from its previous outlook, and it sees costs higher.
Co-founder and CEO Brett Schulman said the company faced economic uncertainty and challenging weather in the quarter.Cava Group (CAVA) shares fell Friday, a day after the Mediterranean fast-casual chain's outlook offset better-than-expected results.
The company didn't change its estimates for full-year same-restaurant sales growth (6.0% to 8.0%) and restaurant-level profit margin (24.8% to 25.2%) from the guidance it gave in February. It also raised its prediction for pre-opening costs to $14.5 million to $15.5 million from $14.0 million to $15.0 million.
However, it did increase its outlooks for net new Cava restaurant openings to a range of 64 to 68 from 62 to 66, and adjusted EBITDA to $152.0 million to $159.0 million from $150.0 million to $157.0 million.
In the first quarter, Cava reported earnings per share of $0.22 on revenue that surged 28% year-over-year to $331.8 million. Both were above Visible Alpha forecasts. Same-restaurant sales grew 10.8%, also above estimates, and traffic rose 7.5%.
Co-founder and CEO Brett Schulman said the performance showed the continuing strength of the company's category-defining brand, "in spite of economic uncertainty and challenging weather."
In a note to clients, JPMorgan analysts remained bullish on Cava, affirming their recent re-upgrade of the stock with a "buy now and own for the long term" opinion. They added the company was "comping well in a difficult environment."
Including Friday morning's 3% decline, shares of Cava Group are nearly 15% lower in 2025.

From fishing family to Big Tech: French CEO takes on Silicon Valley

At just 39 years old, Fidji Simo is poised to become OpenAI's second-in-command after leaving her mark at two other major tech firms, including Meta. Reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman, the move to the ChatGPT-maker represents the latest chapter in a career that has taken Simo from a fishing family in France's Mediterranean port of Sete to the heights of Silicon Valley. As the current CEO of grocery delivery platform Instacart, she cuts a unique profile: a French woman in the male-dominated American tech landscape -- who resists advice to blend in. "I can put all my energy trying to be someone else or I can be myself and pour all of that energy into what I can create," she told CNBC in February. This philosophy will likely be on display when she appears Thursday at the VivaTech conference in Paris. Raised in Sete, Simo attended the elite HEC business school before joining eBay in 2006, first in France then in California. "People expect a very business-like story for why I decided to come to the US. It wasn't. The American Dream was on TV every night and that was an incredibly appealing thing," she said. - 'Never Intimidated' - In 2011, Simo joined Facebook, now Meta. She was given responsibility for video and monetization in 2014, a role she considers the defining moment of her career. Simo championed the company's pivot to video, which became central to Meta's strategy despite initial internal skepticism. "She never let herself be intimidated," recalled David Marcus, who worked at Meta alongside Simo and now serves as CEO of online payment company Lightspark. "She had an ability to challenge Mark (Zuckerberg) and push him, when others would have hesitated." Joining Instacart in 2021, Simo inherited a company that had been bleeding money for a decade. Under her leadership, the grocery delivery platform achieved profitability in 2022 through aggressive diversification: data monetization, expanded retail partnerships and a robust advertising business. Now Simo faces her biggest test yet. As OpenAI's number two, she'll free up CEO Altman to focus on research and infrastructure while she tackles the company's operational challenges. Despite being one of history's most highly funded startups and ChatGPT's phenomenal success, OpenAI is burning cash at an alarming rate. The company has also weathered significant leadership turnover, including Altman's own brief ouster and reinstatement in 2023, raising questions about management stability. But French investor Julien Codorniou, who worked alongside Simo at Facebook, said she will more than rise to the occasion. "Fidji's arrival is a declaration of ambition by OpenAI," he said. tu/arp/acb/des Error while retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error while retrieving data Error while retrieving data Error while retrieving data Error while retrieving data

This Premium Vodka Is Redefining Italian Food And Drinks Pairings

Premium Italian vodka brand Altamura Distilleries is known for its martinis, but it's also shaking ... More up Italian traditions around food pairings and cocktails. When it comes to food and drinks, Italians take things very seriously, but a vodka brand based in southern Italy is inspiring a creative approach to cocktails that blurs the line between aperitivo and dinner. Known as Altamura Distilleries, founder Frank Grillo is both respectful of the Mediterranean country's rich culinary traditions, while also inviting bartenders and chefs in Italy and around the world to explore these traditions in innovative ways with its Italian premium vodka. For Grillo, it all started with a loaf of bread—and not just any bread. In 2020, Grillo—an American with southern Italian heritage and a passion for cooking—came across a recipe for pane di Altamura. This particular baked good has Protected Designation of Origin status from the European Union, meaning that there are specific rules and regulations about where and how it can be made. Most notably, the dough must be prepared with varieties of Durum wheat semolina that grow only in Puglia. After baking what he calls a 'rogue loaf' of pane di Altamura outside the regional boundaries, Grillo was intrigued by the flavor of the special wheat and asked himself: 'What if we could take this bread and express it in a liquid format, instead of a baked format?' A couple years after Grillo did just that, his curiosity and willingness to experiment at the intersection between food and drinks has spurred others to be equally playful with Altamura Distilleries vodka in terms of both mixology and pairings. The savory notes of Altamura Distilleries vodka have inspired not only bartenders, but chefs, too. Key to this is the savory flavor of the vodka, which reflects the terroir of Puglia and its ancient grains. Though vodka is not historically an Italian beverage or generally a spirit sipped slowly alongside meals, Grillo says this one is 'a food-friendly alcohol' and advocates pairing it with umami-forward bites, such as oysters or cheese, especially Parmigiano-Reggiano. 'It's like with cacio e pepe,' Grillo says, referencing the classic Roman pasta made with just cheese and black pepper. 'It's really simple ingredients, but it's really complicated to make because you've got to get it right. With vodka, you just have the grain, so it has to be high quality and very pure. There's nothing to hide behind.' Penne alla vodka, prepared by Chef Carlotta Aggio at the Four Seasons restaurant in Florence, ... More Italy. Chef de cuisine Carlotta Aggio at Il Palagio, the restaurant at the Four Seasons in Florence, takes things a step further, using the Altamura Distilleries vodka in an elevated version of another simple pasta dish, penne alla vodka. Meanwhile, at the hotel's bar, Atrium, head bartender Edoardo Sandri has crafted a cocktail known as La Merenda ('The Snack') featuring the vodka mixed with tomato cordial and garnished with basil chips and a sprinkling of Parmigiano, inspired by his childhood after-school snack of a mozzarella and tomato sandwich. At the Atrium Bar in Florence, Italy, head bartender Edoardo Sandri pours a vodka martini, garnished ... More with a carrot. At a previous Florence Cocktail Week event, bartender Chiara Poloni further emphasized the naturally wheaty character of the vodka by washing it with butter for her cocktail Souvenir d'Enfance, reminiscent of a simple side of bread and butter. To the north, at Michelin-starred Moebius in Milan, bartender Giovanni Allario drew on his memories of growing up in Genoa, the birthplace of pesto, to create a Pesto Martini. Across the Atlantic Ocean, Altamura Distilleries vodka made waves last year as a key ingredient in the Martini of the Year, according to Esquire. Served at Clemente Bar in New York City, its distinctly savory quality comes from curry paste, green chili chutney, and olive oil used to fat-wash the vodka. With Altamura Distilleries officially named the Vodka Partner of The World's 50 Best Hotels, more chefs and bartenders will have a chance to create unique combinations with this Italian premium vodka that bend the rules and blend international flavors.

Total revenue was 3% lower than the prior year due to a decline in consumer demand for foreign currency as travel activity tapered during the current quarter. Although revenue declined, the Company's net income for the second quarter rose compared to the same quarter last year, primarily due to the favorable impact of a weaker U.S. Dollar on the revaluation of foreign currency banknote holdings. The Group's capital position remained robust, and liquidity was strong with $81.2 million in total equity and $60.4 million in net working capital as of April 30, 2025 ($79.4 million and $55.9 million as of October 31, 2024, respectively). All reported amounts are based on the Group's condensed interim consolidated financial statements presented in compliance with International Accounting Standard 34 Interim Financial reporting, unless otherwise noted. On February 18, 2025, the Group announced its decision to cease the operations of its wholly owned subsidiary, Exchange Bank of Canada. This strategic decision and operational plan for restructuring were communicated to all staff of EBC on February 19, 2025. Following the cessation of operations, the Bank intends to apply to the Minister of Finance in Canada to discontinue from the Bank Act. The application to discontinue is expected to be made in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the actual discontinuance of the Bank being subject to receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals. Following the Group's decision, management has commenced implementation of the restructuring and planned discontinuance of the Bank. Management anticipates that certain operating expenses and personnel costs, that are currently shared with EBC, will be 100% borne by the continuing operations of CXI, subsequent to the exit of EBC from Canada, and the current annualized estimate of these costs is approximately $3 million after tax. In the second quarter of 2025, Exchange Bank of Canada was classified as a discontinued operation in the Group's condensed interim consolidated financial statements. On May 20, 2025, CXI upgraded its U.S. securities listing with the Company's shares commencing trading on the OTCQX Best Market under the symbol CURN. Randolph Pinna, CEO of the Group, stated, 'The second quarter showed continued growth in the payments business, while with the current political and economic uncertainties, international travel activity to and from the United States decreased banknote revenues. CXI's diversified business model in the United States allows for continued new client growth in the payments business complemented by successful multi-channel banknotes offerings for both our U.S. Financial Institutions in branch or online as well as the Direct-to-Consumer customer offerings through online, agent and physical branch locations.
