Hans India28-04-2025

New Delhi, April 28: PR Sreejesh, former goalkeeper of the Indian Men's Hockey Team and current coach of the Indian Junior Men's Team, has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award.
Hockey India on Monday, proudly congratulated Sreejesh for receiving this prestigious recognition.
This remarkable recognition places Sreejesh alongside the legendary Major Dhyan Chand, making him only the second hockey player in history to receive the Padma Bhushan. Dhyan Chand was bestowed with this honour in 1956, and nearly seven decades later, Sreejesh's contribution to Indian hockey earns him a place among the greats.
Celebrated as the 'God of Modern Indian Hockey,' Sreejesh enjoyed a glittering 18-year international career, earning 336 caps for India before bidding farewell to professional hockey after the Paris 2024 Olympics. True to form, he delivered a series of stunning performances to help India clinch a Bronze medal, following up on the historic Bronze win at Tokyo 2020.
Throughout his distinguished career, Sreejesh collected numerous accolades, including the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year Award three times (2021, 2022, and 2024), the Arjuna Award in 2015, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021, and the World Games Athlete of the Year in 2021. Since making his senior international debut in 2010, he became a backbone of the Indian defense, known for his composure and brilliance under pressure.
Transitioning smoothly into coaching, Sreejesh led the Indian junior team to a memorable Junior Asia Cup title win in November 2024, continuing to contribute to Indian hockey's growing success story.
Sreejesh's impressive resume also includes appearances at four Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024), two Asian Games Gold medals (2014 and 2022), an Asian Games Bronze medal (2018), and two Commonwealth Games Silver medals (2014 and 2022). He also played a pivotal role in India's triumph at the Asian Champions Trophy on four occasions (2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023).
Reflecting on this significant honour, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, 'PR Sreejesh's contribution to Indian hockey, both as a player and now as a coach, has been extraordinary. He exemplifies dedication, excellence, and leadership. This Padma Bhushan is a fitting tribute to a career that has inspired countless young players across India. On behalf of Hockey India, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him and his family.'
Adding to the sentiments, Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh stated, 'Sreejesh has been the heart of Indian hockey's resurgence on the world stage. His achievements are not just personal milestones but proud moments for the entire hockey fraternity. We are extremely proud of him and look forward to seeing him shape the future of Indian hockey through his coaching.'

'Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge': Karnataka Deputy CM's epic take on rumours of buying franchise

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Wednesday shut down rumours about him buying the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise in epic fashion. His statement came a day after RCB owners, Diageo India — the Indian arm of UK-based Diageo Plc — responded to speculation that part or all of the IPL franchise was up for sale "I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge," Shivakumar told news agency ANI. Earlier this week, a Bloomberg report said that the British distiller was in discussion with potential advisers on selling the club. Diageo owns the team through its Indian unit, United Spirits Ltd., and may seek a valuation of as much as $2 billion. Following the rumours, the shares of United Spirits, registered with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), gained a 3.3 per cent increase in its price, this hitting a five-month high on Tuesday morning. This forced the BSE to sent out a mail to Diageo, who then responded saying the reports were merely speculative in nature. Mital Sanghvi, the company secretary, informed the regulating body of the Indian Stock Market on the mail saying, "The company would like to clarify that the aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussion. This is for your information and records."

Virat Kohli's aura and chirping will be a big miss for India at slips: Ollie Pope

Star England batter Ollie Pope feels India will miss Virat Kohli's aura and his chirping standing in the slips in the upcoming Test series against England. India and England are set to lock horns in a five-match series beginning from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. Ahead of the all-important rubber, senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements, leaving massive holes to fill in the Indian Ollie Pope commented on the absence of the senior duo, mentioning Indian cricket's depth and said that they have enough players to fill in the shoes. However, Pope also stated that India will miss Virat Kohli's intimidating presence on the field as he was always in the face of the Final 2025 SA vs AUS Live "It's a young team, but these Indian players they have got so much depth and talent. So they've got a lot of young guys coming through; a lot of good players. Shubman Gill, their new captain, is a fantastic player. They will miss the aura of Virat Kohli standing at slips and chirping away. But they have got some good talent, so they will feel confident. But our players are ready for it," Pope said during an interaction with talkSPORT Pope also stated that it's going to be great challenge to face a quality team like India, which will serve as a good preparation for the Ashes later this year."It's a great time for us to play India. Last summer, we had the West Indies and Sri Lanka, but with India coming over, the level of quality that they will bring is a great way for us to focus on that and not look ahead. So yeah, for us, it's the perfect time to play India, and then once the Ashes come around, it will be exciting," Pope upcoming series will be the first assignment for the new captain Shubman Gill and vice captain Rishabh Pant.
