NU Faces Uncertainty As Deans' Tenure Nears End
Nagpur: The tenure of deans and associate deans across all four faculties of Nagpur University (NU) is set to conclude on June 15. The impending end of their terms has again raised concerns, as new appointments cannot be made until a full-time vice-chancellor is appointed.
The faculties of science and technology, commerce and management, and humanities each have a dean and an associate dean, while the interdisciplinary studies faculty is led by a single dean.
In April, the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University had extended tenures of deans to avoid a leadership vacuum, as the absence of a permanent VC complicated the appointment process. Recently, Maharashtra governor, who is chancellor of universities in the state, constituted a search panel to select a new VC, but the process is expected to take at least two months.
This delay may force NU to extend the deans' tenures once again, a decision that could pose administrative and financial challenges.
Additional divisional commissioner Madhavi Khode-Chawre, who holds additional charge of vice-chancellor, said directions would be issued at an appropriate time.
The issue of deans' continuation has been a recurring challenge for the university. The problem first emerged when former VC Subhash Chaudhari passed away under suspension.

Initially, the deans' tenures were extended until the academic session's end, typically April 30 as per NU's calendar. However, ongoing academic activities stretched until June 15, necessitating further extensions.
As academic heads, deans play a critical role, presiding over key committees and meetings. The current deans, being full-time salaried officers, face a unique dilemma: extending their tenures may conflict with govt norms, potentially jeopardising their salaries. With the VC appointment process ongoing, NU's administration will have to make a temporary arrangement soon.

Cabinet nod to Rs 1,113cr biotechnology devpt scheme
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The state cabinet, under the chairmanship of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Friday approved a comprehensive five-year biotechnology development scheme with an outlay of Rs 1,113.50 crore. The programme will be implemented from 2025-26 to 2029-30. The 'Development of Biotechnology' initiative, comprising 17 sub-schemes, aims to transform Odisha into a knowledge-driven bio-economy by leveraging the state's rich biodiversity and existing research infrastructure. "This scheme will create a robust ecosystem for innovation, incubation and investment in the biotechnology sector," a govt statement said. The programme aligns with the state's Industrial Policy Resolution (IPR) 2022, which identifies biotechnology as a thrust sector. The scheme's primary objectives include promoting higher education and research infrastructure, developing a supportive ecosystem for innovation and industry, aligning academic excellence with industry requirements and facilitating product development and commercialisation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo It will also promote utilising biotechnology innovations for socio-economic development. The new scheme aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry while fostering collaboration across sectors including agriculture, medicine and environmental sciences. The initiative complements the recently announced Odisha Biotechnology Policy, 2024, offering incentives for advanced infrastructure development and positioning the state as a biotechnology hub. The cabinet also gave its nod to modalities of the Mukhyamantri Sahari Bikash Yojana (MSBY), with a massive outlay of Rs 6,000 crore over five years. The scheme, aligned with the state's "Viksit Odisha@2036 vision", aims to revolutionise urban infrastructure and boost revenue generation across cities. For the initial year (2025-26), the state has allocated Rs 1,100 crore in the last budget. The scheme, scheduled to run from 2025-26 to 2029-30, will focus on four key areas — urban infrastructure development, wage employment, water body development and animal welfare. Under the infrastructure component, the scheme will develop various facilities, including kalyan mandaps and multi-purpose halls, market complexes and vending zones, roads, drains, and parking facilities and EV charging stations, among others. The cabinet also gave its nod to exempt land premium of Rs 2.60 crore for lease of a piece of land to Narcotics Control Bureau for construction of its building. Govt staff JAC defers strike plan after cabinet accepts key demands
Hyderabad: The govt employees joint action committee (JAC) has indefinitely postponed their strike scheduled to be launched from June 9 following the state cabinet's decision to release two DAs and accept some of their main demands such as health cards and transfers. The JAC will meet again by the end of the month after the cabinet decisions are formally documented to decide their future course of action. JAC secretary general Eluri Sreenivasa Rao told TOI that the announcement of two DAs, govt agreeing to clear Rs 700 crore per month in pending bills of employees, constitution of a medical invalidation committee, health cards, a departmental promotion committee for transfers and recognition of employees' unions were some of the main demands of the JAC that have been agreed to by the govt. "As a result, the JAC has decided to indefinitely postpone its strike call. However, the govt did not announce anything about our other main demands such as 51% fitment (Pay Revision Commission) and reverting to the old pension system. There were a total of 57 demands, and the JAC is expecting to meet again with the IAS officers' committee led by Navin Mittal and cabinet sub-committee led by deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka to seek a commitment from the govt on the remaining demands," Sreenivasa Rao said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en San Rafael (ver precio) Verisure Undo Sources in the govt said that although the cabinet discussed the 51% fitment (PRC) demand, it was of the view that more time was needed to announce a consensual fitment, if not 51%, as the govt has decided to clear pending bills of employees every month and has also announced two DAs, both of which are financially intensive demands. "A decision on increasing the retirement age of govt employees was kept pending, anticipating severe backlash from the students and unemployed youth. The govt is of the opinion that no step should be taken at this juncture which may antagonise the youth, who are happy with the incumbent govt giving nearly 60,000 jobs in its first year of office. A decision on the age of superannuation may be taken after panchayat and municipal polls, but only after giving job notifications for at least another 30,000 govt posts," said the source. Regarding the employees' demand for reverting to the old pension system, an election promise of the Congress, sources said the govt may make an announcement about it only in the last year of its present term or a few months before the next assembly elections. Bengaluru stampede: Min Ramalinga Reddy admits ‘some lapses' on part of govt; Hebbalkar, HK Patil deny
Belagavi: Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy on Friday admitted to 'certain administrative lapses' in connection with the Bengaluru stampede but argued that the govt alone cannot be blamed. Speaking to media persons in Belagavi, he said: "Some lapses occurred, but the govt cannot be held solely responsible." He noted that while the state already organised an official felicitation for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team in front of Vidhana Soudha, a separate celebration at Chinnaswamy Stadium, hosted by the RCB management and stadium authorities, was unnecessary. This event drew an overwhelming crowd of 2–3 lakh fans, far exceeding the stadium's 35,000 seating capacity. "They publicly announced free tickets and failed to obtain police permission for the event," Reddy said. "RCB and the stadium authorities must be held accountable." However, the minister acknowledged shortcomings on the part of the govt as well. "Our intelligence should have picked up on this. The police should've insisted on permission. If refused, they should've stepped in to restrict the event," he said. Responding to BJP's demand for the resignation of CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and home minister G Parameshwara, Reddy accused the opposition of double standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like People Born 1940-1975 With No Life Insurance Could Be Eligible For This Reassured Get Quote Undo "In the past, stampedes and terror attacks took lives — be it Kumbh Mela in UP or Pahalgam in Kashmir. did any top BJP leader resign?" he asked, drawing comparisons to national-level incidents. Govt taking action across the board: HK Patil Law & parliamentary affairs minister HK patil rejected claims that police officers were being scapegoated. "The govt has taken swift action — not only against police officials but also against the RCB management and event organisers. FIRs have been filed," he said. He emphasised that a one-member commission, headed by retired high court judge John Michael Cunha, has been constituted to conduct a thorough investigation. "We are acting transparently. What more do they expect?" he said, also highlighting the chief minister and deputy chief minister's prompt outreach to victims' families immediately after the incident. RCB should pay Rs 1 crore compensation: Hebbalkar Women and child welfare minister Laxmi Hebbalkar demanded that RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association pay Rs 1 crore compensation per victim, stating that the franchise has 'earned substantial profits' and should now show responsibility. On the matter of intelligence failure, she called it part of the broader investigation and accused the opposition of misleading the public for political mileage. All three ministers were in Belagavi on Friday to attend an event of the Reddy community, where they spoke to media persons.
