China adding 100 nuclear warheads annually: SIPRI

NEW DELHI: China is now adding 100 warheads to its nuclear arsenal every year, which is already more than three times India's stockpile. While India continues to maintain a slight edge over Pakistan, the recent cross-border military conflict between them risked escalating into a nuclear crisis, says a global arms watchdog.
China has 600 warheads, up from 500 in Jan 2024, while India has 180 and Pakistan 170, as per the latest assessment by the Stockholm International Peace Institute (SIPRI) released on Monday. Russia and the US, of course, are way ahead of others, together accounting for 90% of all nuclear weapons.
Taking note of
Operation Sindoor
launched by India against Pakistan on May 7, a senior SIPRI researcher said, "The combination of strikes on nuclear-related military infrastructure and third-party disinformation risked turning a conventional conflict into a nuclear crisis."
Indian officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, however, have stressed that the May 7-10 hostilities came nowhere close to either side contemplating the use of nuclear weapons.
India, however, did strike the Sargodha and Nur Khan air-bases, among others, in clear strategic messaging. The first is located near Pakistan's underground nuclear infrastructure and storage facilities at Kirana Hills, while the second is close to the headquarters of the Strategic Plans Division that oversees the country's nuclear arsenal.

The SIPRI researcher, on his part, said, "As the recent flare-up of hostilities in India and Pakistan amply demonstrated, nuclear weapons do not prevent conflict. They also come with immense risks of escalation and catastrophic miscalculation - particularly when disinformation is rife - and may end up making a country's population less safe, not more."
Overall, the SIPRI report said China's nuclear arsenal is growing faster than any other country and is likely to touch 1,500 warheads by 2035.
Both India and Pakistan continued to develop new types of nuclear weapon delivery systems in 2024, and are also pursuing the capability to deploy multiple warheads on ballistic missiles.
India has "slightly expanded" its nuclear arsenal from 172 warheads last year to 180 now, with its new "canisterised" missiles making it possible for them to carry mated nuclear warheads even during "peacetime", it added.
As reported by TOI earlier, the China-specific Agni-5 (strike range over 5,000 km) and the new-generation Agni-Prime (1,000-2,000 km) ballistic missiles, which are being inducted into the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), come in hermetically-sealed canisters.
The Agni-Prime will gradually replace the Agni-1 (700 km) and Agni-2 (2,000 km) missiles already in the SFC's arsenal.
With missiles with mated warheads in ready-to-fire configurations, the SFC gets the requisite operational flexibility to store them for long periods, swiftly transport them through rail or road when required, and fire from wherever they want. The Agni-5 was also tested with multiple warheads (MIRVs or multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles) for the first time in March last year.
The SIPRI report said Pakistan is developing its "nascent" nuclear triad of aircraft, ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles, and sea-launched cruise missiles like the Babur-3 being fitted on Agosta-90B diesel-electric submarines.
India, in turn, has a "maturing" nuclear triad, with two operational SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles) in INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, strengthening the naval leg of its nuclear triad. The third slightly larger SSBN will be commissioned as INS Aridhaman this year, as reported by TOI earlier.

FEI cancels equestrian events in India due to non-payment of dues
New Delhi: In Amanpreet Singha development that will hurt the riders and the development of equestrian sport in the country, at least 24 domestic and international tournaments have been cancelled due to non-payment of dues to the world governing body, FEI, by the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI). It has been learnt that EFI was supposed to pay about Rs 27 lakh to the FEI officials as remuneration and allied charges for various events held between January and March 2025. However, the federation's account stands frozen due to the infighting among the warring factions, leading to non-payments of dues, forcing FEI to take off the events from the calendar. The EFI also needs to settle accounts for unpaid salaries, various costs of tournaments hosted in the past year and other expenses running into almost two crore. 'EFI was supposed to pay remuneration to FEI officials for various Eventing, Show Jumping and Dressage events held in Delhi, Meerut, and Jaipur. However, the bank has frozen the account due to different factions within the Federation claiming operational access,' an EFI source told PTI. 'It is embarrassing and the athletes are the biggest losers here, but that is the situation. The sports ministry has been apprised of the latest infighting,' the source added. The EFI was supposed to hold its election in September 2023 but litigations delayed the polls, following which a Committee of Administrators (CoA) was appointed by the Delhi High Court on May 21, 2024. The decision was challenged and, on May 29, the court reinstated the Executive Committee of the EFI as an interim measure, keeping in mind the participation of Indian riders in the Paris Olympics. The EC, in a meeting on April 11, 2025, without the presence of court-appointed observer SY Quraishi, decided to suspend Colonel Jaiveer Singh as secretary general of the Federation. Quraishi directed the EC to get the order approved from the court before its implementation. Colonel SS Ahlawat moved the court on May 5, seeking approval. However, the application was rejected on May 7 since the decision was not conforming to the law. 'The faction that removed the secretary general notified the development to FEI and also claimed the ownership of the bank account before getting the approval of the court. The bank then froze the account due to multiple stakes,' the source said. When contacted, Col. Jaiveer Singh confirmed the development.

I am safe due to Hindus' blessings: Praveen Togadia
Hubballi: Praveen Togadia, founder president of International Hindu Parishad, stated that he is safe due to the blessings of Hindus and that it is not appropriate to discuss past events now. He also mentioned that there have been no problems even under the Congress government. Addressing a press conference in the city on Monday, Togadia said, 'Our objective was to build the Ram Mandir. That work is now complete. Today, the work of helping crores of Hindus has begun. We have launched the Hindu Helpline. No Hindu should suffer from hunger. For that, we are providing free food grains to poor Hindus. We are also providing free health services to Hindus.' He further added, 'There is no intention to start a Hindu party. India itself is a Hindu nation. There is no need to make it a Hindu nation. India has been progressing since 1947 and has achieved great success in many fields. India has grown to be great. It is not right to make it great through political parties.' Togadia stated, 'We did not agitate for names, but for the Ram Mandir, and it has been successful. False cases should not be filed against Hindus. If they are, we will fight. Hindus are being attacked in many parts of the country. Therefore, we will fight for the safety of Hindus. Hindus must be safe in the country.' Commenting on the 'Operation Sindoor' matter, Togadia said, 'It is good that they entered Pakistan and attacked. If they had hit more, our people would have been happier. The birth rate in the country is decreasing. That of Hindus is 1.7. This is not a good development for the entire country.' He also opined, 'Our objective is 'Teen Bachche Hindu Sacche' (Three children, true Hindu).'

Accountability Missing, Terrorists Still At Large: Abhishek Banerjee Slams Centre over Pahalgam Attack
In a scathing critique, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has launched a pointed attack on the Centre over its silence and alleged failure in handling the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead more than 55 days ago. Raising five hard-hitting questions on social media, Banerjee questioned the government's border security preparedness, intelligence lapses, and what he called a shocking lack of transparency. Banerjee demanded to know how four terrorists crossed Indian borders undetected and questioned why the Intelligence Bureau chief was granted a one-year extension shortly after the attack. "Why was he rewarded rather than held accountable?" he asked. He also raised a red flag over the silence surrounding the terrorists responsible. 'Are they dead or alive? If neutralized, why hasn't the government said so? If not, why this disturbing silence?' he wrote. It has been over 55 DAYS since the PAHALGAM terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy neither the mainstream media, members of the opposition, nor the judiciary has stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India. However, as… — Abhishek Banerjee (@abhishekaitc) June 16, 2025 Banerjee went further, questioning India's foreign policy direction, asking why global financial institutions rewarded Pakistan with billions in aid just weeks after the attack, and how it managed to secure the Vice-Chair seat at the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee. Despite being part of India's official post-attack outreach delegations, Banerjee made it clear that 'India deserves accountability, not spin.' In a speech delivered in Japan during the diplomatic mission, he minced no words: 'If terrorism is a rabid dog, Pakistan is its vile handler.' This marks one of the strongest public challenges to the Modi government's handling of national security from a sitting MP, with Banerjee alleging that critical questions have been ignored by the media, judiciary, and even opposition voices. As public pressure builds, Banerjee's intervention has reignited calls for clarity, justice, and decisive action.
