Gujarati man sentenced to 12 years in US for living illegally, defrauding elderly

AHMEDABAD: A Gujarati man living illegally in the US for 12 years was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for his role in a fraud scheme that targeted elderly people in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
The conviction was announced by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Illinois on Tuesday.
Nirav Patel, 44, who hails from North Gujarat, was convicted in February by a federal jury. The charges included one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud, and one count of illegal entry into the United States, said officers.
'This illegal alien (Patel) admitted that he came to Illinois because the state would give him a driver's license, and then he used that license to steal from the elderly all across the Midwest,' said US Attorney Steven D.

The fraud was carried out as an imposter scam. Victims received texts or emails saying their
Amazon
accounts were compromised. When they responded, they were connected to fraudsters pretending to be federal agents.
The victims were told to withdraw their savings for protection against supposed identity theft and deposit the funds into fake US govt accounts. In reality, the money was stolen and sent to accounts in India controlled by the scammers, said officers.

Patel worked as a courier, personally collecting cash, gold, and other assets from the victims. According to trial evidence, he once picked up $177,000 worth of gold bars from an elderly woman using a walker and oxygen at her assisted living facility. 'These scams need people on the ground in the US in order to be successful, and those willing to help them should receive stiff sentences,' the court said during sentencing.
Patel entered the US illegally near Vancouver. He later connected with the fraud group in Georgia and moved to Chicago. There, he obtained a driver's license illegally and travelled through Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana to collect money on behalf of the network.
'This case highlights the serious public safety risks posed by individuals who enter the United States illegally and exploit our systems to target some of the most vulnerable among us,' said ICE Homeland Security Investigations Chicago Special Agent in Charge Matthew Scarpino.
The Federal Trade Commission reported in March 2025 that imposter scams are now the most common type of consumer fraud in the US.

CCPA's recent advisory on dark patterns sent to over 50 online platforms
India's consumer protection watchdog recently issued an advisory to over 50 online platforms, asking them to eliminate dark patterns and conduct self-audits within three months. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) sent the directive not just to e-commerce giants such as Amazon and Flipkart but also to travel aggregators, food-tech platforms, ride-hailing firms, medi-tech start-ups, streaming services, and fintech companies. Business Standard reviewed a copy of the 5 June email, which noted ongoing instances of dark pattern use despite existing guidelines. In some cases, the CCPA said it had issued notices. The advisory cited Rule 4(9) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, which mandates that consumer consent for purchases must be explicitly obtained — not automatically recorded through pre-ticked checkboxes or similar mechanisms. Companies are still evaluating the advisory. Flipkart, in a statement, said the company welcomes the CCPA's emphasis on fostering online consumer confidence. 'We are currently assessing the self-audit requirements to ensure comprehensive and timely compliance, and we see this advisory as a reaffirmation of the values already central to our Flipkart Marketplace Platform.' The statement further added: 'Flipkart has been committed towards the dark pattern guidelines and has taken several measures to increase its awareness. Our active collaboration with the government and other stakeholders has been key to jointly shaping a responsible e-commerce ecosystem.' Another platform acknowledged the advisory but noted that the dark pattern guidelines are not legally binding. It argued that such practices are not an industry-wide issue and that companies routinely experiment with design elements to boost engagement and sales. Business Standard wrote to platforms including Amazon, Meesho, Apple, Uber, BookMyShow, Paytm, Namma Yatri, Meta, Nykaa, Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket, Tata 1mg, and Snapdeal. However, these queries did not elicit a response till the time of going to press. Dark patterns refer to deceptive or manipulative design elements in websites or mobile applications that trick users into taking actions they might not have intended, such as making a purchase or subscribing to a service. In 2023, the government issued guidelines identifying 13 specific types of dark patterns. These include tactics such as creating false urgency, adding items to a cart without consent (basket sneaking), guilt-tripping users (confirm shaming), forcing actions, trapping users in subscriptions (subscription traps), manipulating interfaces (interface interference), bait-and-switch tactics, hiding full costs (drip pricing), disguising advertisements, persistent prompts (nagging), misleading wording, unclear SaaS billing practices, and deceptive malware behaviours (rogue malware).

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and struck nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir in response to a ghastly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam last month in which 26 people were killed. After the attack, Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling across the Line of Control and Jammu and Kashmir as well as attempted drone attacks along the border regions, following which India launched a coordinated attack and damaged radar infrastructure, communication centres, and airfields across 11 airbases in Pakistan. After this, on May 10, an understanding of the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was announced. (ANI)

Gujarat: CM Patel approves grant of Rs 107 crore for road repairs to 149 municipalities across state
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 8 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has begun advanced planning to ensure that if urban roads across the state are severely damaged due to heavy rains during this year's monsoon, resurfacing and repair work can begin without delay. For this purpose, the Chief Minister has approved the allocation of a total grant of Rs 107 crore to 149 municipalities across the state from the Mukhyamantri Shaheri Sadak Yojana, under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana, according to the release. During the monsoon season, heavy rainfall is likely to cause significant damage to roads in urban areas of the state. Thereby adopting a people-centric approach, CM Patel has prioritised prompt resurfacing and repair of these roads to enhance road safety and improve urban infrastructure. Besides, if roads in certain municipalities are in poor condition due to excavations for sewerage, drinking water pipelines, and other works, the state government provides funds for road repairs in those areas before the monsoon, based on requests from the respective municipalities. He has approved the allocation of grants to municipalities based on their category as part of the planning for road repair and resurfacing across the state. Accordingly, a total grant of Rs 37 crore will be allocated to 37 'A' category municipalities, with Rs1 crore allotted to each, Rs 27 crore will be allocated to 34 'B' category municipalities, with Rs80 lakh allotted to each, Rs 36 crore will be allocated to 61 'C' category municipalities with Rs 60 lakh, allotted to each, Rs 6.80 crore will be allocated to 17 'D' category municipalities with Rs 40 lakh allotted to each, said release. Thus, a total grant of Rs 107 crore will be allocated to the respective municipalities from the Mukhyamantri Shaheri Sadak Yojana by the Gujarat Urban Development Mission. Furthermore, if roads in the state's urban areas suffer further damage due to heavy rainfall during the monsoon, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has adopted a people-centric approach to allocate additional funds for road repairs based on the municipalities' needs and demands, over and above the amounts already allocated.
