Growing scam ads target jobseekers and shoppers, CyberSecurity Malaysia warns

KUALA LUMPUR: A surge in scam advertisements flooding search engines and social media platforms has triggered fresh warnings from cybersecurity authorities.
CyberSecurity Malaysia said scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, including fake job offers, instant loan schemes, and counterfeit luxury goods, to lure victims into their traps.
The warning comes amid rising reports of jobseekers and online shoppers falling prey to ads that redirect users to clone websites designed to steal personal and financial information.
Cybersecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab said scam ads that promise high returns with minimal risk or offer "instant approval" without paperwork are classic red flags.
"Legitimate financial institutions operate under strict regulatory requirements.
"The moment you are pressured by urgent calls to act or limited-time offers, that should immediately raise suspicion," he told the New Straits Times.
Online shopping, he added, is no safer. Cloned websites offering cut-price branded goods remain a common ploy.
"Scammers use these websites to lure unsuspecting users into entering credit card details.
"As online retail grows, so does the risk. Vigilance is no longer optional," said Amirudin.
He advised consumers to double-check website URLs, avoid unfamiliar domains, and treat exaggerated claims or urgent language with scepticism.
"Look for secure HTTPS connections, and research a site's credibility before committing to any purchase," he added.
While tech platforms are ramping up their defences, Amirudin stressed that safety still depends on user awareness.
"Technology is evolving, but so are scammers," he said.
"The best line of defence remains a cautious user. Always pause, verify, and never let urgency override your judgment."
Meanwhile, a Google spokesman said the company blocked or removed over 5.1 billion ads and restricted 9.1 billion others last year.
It also suspended more than 39.2 million advertiser accounts, including 415 million ads and over five million accounts specifically flagged for scam-related violations.
In a statement to the New Straits Times, the spokesman said user safety remains the platform's highest priority.
"We use advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), human reviewers, and user reporting to combat scam ads and adapt constantly to emerging threats."
Google also encouraged users to report suspicious ads directly through the platform, adding that public feedback is crucial in helping improve its automated systems and in detecting new fraud tactics early.

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. 'This festival was created to let visitors enjoy the beauty of agro-tourism in northern Selangor, a region that produces the most rice in Malaysia and is rich in natural beauty that you can't find in modern cities,' said Ng. The festival was launched by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Held from 7am to 7pm over two days, it featured a variety of family-friendly and cultural activities. Among first day highlights were electric tram and rickshaw tours through padi fields, a food festival, traditional kite (wau kapal) demonstrations, a mini kite decoration competition and a live performance by Malaysian singer-songwriter Aizat Amdan. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

KUALA LUMPUR: The tightening of foreign student policies in the United States may have disrupted the study plans of many worldwide, but Malaysian experts say this is an opportunity to relook at support and funding for local institutions. Former deputy higher education director-general Professor Datuk Dr Noor Azizi Ismail said with the right ecosystem, greater autonomy and stronger funding, local universities could offer high-quality education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. "We have the talent. Many of our academics are graduates of world-class universities, but they also possess a better understanding of our local context," he said to the New Straits Times. Noor Azizi, who is also former UMK vice-chancellor and Malaysian Graduate School Entrepreneurship and Business lecturer, acknowledged that the US remained home to top STEM institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard and Stanford. But he said the current restrictions could steer students toward equally strong alternatives. "In fact, our local universities may even be more relevant in addressing regional challenges and industry needs," Noor Azizi added. International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) principal director (Academic and Internationalisation) Professor Dr Amir Akramin Shafie echoed the view, saying that "brain stay" could strengthen domestic institutions and fill talent gaps, particularly in Malaysia's key sectors, like semiconductors and advanced manufacturing. Amir Akramin, who is also a lecturer at IIUM's Mechatronics Engineering Department, highlighted the strengths of British and Australian universities, with the former known for its excellence in fundamental sciences and engineering, while the latter led in environmental science, mining and biotechnology. "The perception that the US is the sole leader in STEM might be partially outdated," he said. Amir added that Germany, Japan and South Korea had also invested heavily in STEM education and could now offer globally respected programmes. While some students might initially struggle to shift away from the "US dream", Amir Akramin believed many would adapt and develop new preferences. "This will enhance our diversity and increase the overall international experience of our STEM workforce," he said. Both academics also said with the current US policy, the country might experience reduced exchange of ideas and fewer international collaborations, which would eventually shift the global innovation landscape away from American institutions. "On the upside, a shift from "brain drain" to "brain stay" could help Malaysia strengthen local innovation, build institutional capacity and establish itself as a regional hub for STEM education," said Noor Azizi. On May 27, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a suspension of student visa processing as President Donald Trump's administration ramped up vetting of their social media. It was the latest move after Rubio rescinded hundreds of visas and the Trump administration moved to bar Harvard from admitting non-Americans. Rubio had used an obscure law that allowed the removal of foreigners for activities deemed counter to US foreign policy interests. The most visible targets had been students involved in activism over Gaza. Trump administration officials accused the students of anti-Semitism, charges strenuously denied by a number of those targeted.

THE country and the United States have agreed to speed up trade talks, Hanoi said. Vietnam has the third-biggest trade surplus with the United States, after China and Mexico, and is anxious to address the imbalance to head off President Donald Trump's threatened 46% levy as part of his global tariff blitz. Vietnamese and US officials agreed at a meeting in Paris on Wednesday to 'focus maximum efforts to achieve the best results in the third technical negotiation round' scheduled for the first half of June, Vietnam's trade ministry said in a statement yesterday. Trade minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed Vietnam's 'determination and goodwill' to reach an agreement with the United States, while his American counterpart Jamieson Greer said a deal would be important for Washing­ton as well as Hanoi, according to the statement. Meanwhile, a delegation from Vietnam's agriculture ministry visiting the United States signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) to buy raw materials for animal feed from Ohio worth US$600mil (RM2.5bil), the ministry said in a separate statement on its website yesterday. That comes after Vietnam announced five MOUs to buy products worth around US$800mil (RM3.4bil) from Iowa over three years, including soybean meal, corn, wheat, dried soybeans and dried distillers grains. The South-East Asian country was expected to sign deals with the United States to buy more than US$2bil (RM8.5bil) worth of agricultural products in total, the statement added. Vietnam has been seeking help to solve the tariff stand-off from several US tech and industry giants, including Lockheed Martin, SpaceX and Google. — AFP
