Palace says Marcos not against wage hike
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. is not against wage hike, Malacañang clarified Friday.
At a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro was asked for reaction on the statement made by Kabataan party-list that it was Marcos who ''killed'' the proposed measure to raise the salary of workers as he favors the ''rich boys club.''
''Diktador ba ang Pangulong Marcos Jr.? Hindi naman po. Hayaan na lang po muna natin ang usapin na 'yan sa Kongreso at ang Pangulo naman po ay hindi tutol sa increased wage hike dahil ito po naman ay makakabuti sa mga manggagawa,'' Castro said.
(Is President Marcos Jr. a dictator? He's not. Let's leave the discussion to the Congress. The President is not against wage hike since this is good for our workers.)
However, Castro said there is a process that must be followed in increasing the wage of workers.
With 171 yes votes, zero no votes, and one abstention, the House of Representatives last week approved on third and final reading the proposed measure granting a P200 increase in the daily minimum wage for workers in the private sector.
The House version of the legislated wage hike offered a higher increase than the P100 approved by the Senate. The House and the Senate will have to reconcile the differences at the bicameral conference committee before transmitting the enrolled bill to Malacañang.
But since the 19th Congress has adjourned sine die, the bill will have to be refiled in the 20th Congress.
Marcos will look into the economic implications of the proposed increase in the minimum wage for workers, Castro earlier said. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives had jointly passed a concurrent resolution calling for President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. to create a Cabinet Cluster for Education in order to address the country's education crisis, the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) said Saturday. In a statement, EDCOM 2 said it passed the concurrent resolution last June 11, the last day of the 19th Congress, to resolve the prevailing issues of functional illiteracy, lack of access to quality early childhood education, the obvious mismatch between graduate skills and industry needs, and significant gaps in teacher development, as identified by the commission in its Year 1 and 2 reports. EDCOM 2 co-chairpersons Senator Win Gatchalian and Pasig City Roman Romulo urged for the adoption of the resolution in both houses during the 19th Congress that led to a landmark consensus on the significance of the cluster to institutionalize coordination of education agencies amid the country's learning crisis. 'Most of the issues reported by EDCOM2 - functional literacy crisis, challenges in senior high school, job-skills mismatch, and gaps in teacher specialization - stem from a lack of coordination among the various education departments," Romulo said. "The Cabinet Cluster for Education will serve as a vital platform for these agencies to collaborate more closely, ensuring aligned efforts and unified direction under the leadership and guidance of the President,' he added. The call for a Cabinet-level cluster aligns with President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos's directive last August 2024 for education agencies to create a comprehensive 10-year education and workforce development strategy, an essential next step to assure the effective implementation of the strategy. 'With the persistent job-skills mismatch, underwhelming outcomes in senior high school, and the learning crisis revealed by EDCOM 2, a high-level, coordinated approach is crucial to help our students. This cluster will provide the strategic direction and coherence needed to ensure that every Filipino learner—whether bound for college or the workforce—is equipped with the right skills, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed,' said EDCOM 2 Commissioner Rep. Pablo John Garcia. According to EDCOM 2, the initiative had received endorsement from key government agencies, education stakeholders, and experts, who backed the call for increased alignment within the education sector and the strategic allocation of resources toward urgent national goals. Meanwhile, the Senate's version of the resolution was endorsed by EDCOM 2 commissioners, including senators Sherwin Gatchalian, Allan Peter Cayetano, Joel Villanueva, and Loren Legarda. VP Sara back in PH after Malaysia trip
Vice President Sara Duterte is back in the Philippines after a four-day personal trip with her family in Malaysia. The Office of the Vice President said Duterte returned to the country on Saturday, June 14, at around 5:43 a.m. arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) via Philippine Airlines flight PR 530. 'Her return follows a recent visit to Malaysia,' the OVP said. While in Malaysia, Duterte also attended an Independence Day celebration with OFWs. She was also in Malaysia when the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms served the writ of summons for her impeachment case. The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, meanwhile, voted (18-5) to return to the House of Representatives the articles of impeachment against Duterte without dismissing or terminating them. The Vice President was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint against her. She was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. Duterte has said that her lawyers are now preparing her compliance for the summons issued by the Senate impeachment court against her. De Lima slams Senate's return of VP Sara's impeachment case to House
Representative-elect Leila de Lima of ML Party-list denounced the move of the Senate sitting as an impeachment court to return to the House of Representatives the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte. 'Harap-harapan na tayong niloloko. Sila ang nagtanong, sila rin ang sumagot. Walang due process. Walang hiya,' de Lima said in a statement. (We are being duped right in front of us. They asked, but they are also the ones who answered. No due process. No shame.) With 18 affirmative, five negative votes, and zero abstentions, the Senate, on Tuesday, voted to return to the lower chamber the Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President without dismissing or terminating them. 'Ano ito—korte o kulto? (What is this — a court or a cult?)' the former senator and incoming party-list said de Lima, who last month accepted invitations to join the prosecution panel of the House of Representatives in the impeachment trial of Duterte. During a plenary session, Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa made a motion seeking that the verified impeachment complaint against the Vice President be dismissed "in view of its constitutional infirmities and questions on the jurisdiction and authority of the 20th Congress." Senate President Francis ''Chiz'' Escudero then ruled that the impeachment court should be convened first before acting on any motion to dismiss the impeachment complaint. When the impeachment court was convened, senators debated on Dela Rosa's motion for hours. Senator-judge Alan Peter Cayetano then moved to amend Dela Rosa's motion that the Articles of Impeachment be returned to the House of Representatives instead, without dismissing or terminating the case. The House of Representatives on Wednesday night certified that the impeachment of Duterte complied with the 1987 Constitution. Escudero on Thursday however said the Senate has yet to receive any pleading from the House of Representatives regarding the impeachment of Duterte. The ML Party-list representative-elect further said that the impeachment complaint should have been filed in a 'palengke' or a public market, saying 'pareho lang din—walang nangyaring hustisya… at least doon, may nagtitinda ng totoo (It's the same. There is no justice... At least [in the market], there are vendors who truthfully sell).' 'This is how impunity thrives: pakonti-konti, paisa-isang hakbang, hanggang sa mabaon sa kalokohan ang katotohanan (slowly, one step at a time, until the truth is buried under falsehood),' she said. The incoming lawmaker then praised the senators who voted against remanding the Articles of Impeachment to the House. 'To Senators Risa Hontiveros, Koko Pimentel, Nancy Binay, Win Gatchalian, and Grace Poe: thank you for standing your ground,' de Lima said. 'This is not just a setback. It is a stain—on the Senate, on the law, on the very idea that accountability is still possible in this country,' she said. 'You had one job: to let the truth be heard. Instead, you chose silence dressed as procedure. Delay disguised as order. Cowardice in the costume of rules. "Pero tandaan niyo ito: hindi kami tatahimik. At hindi lahat ng dinadaan sa teknikalidad ay nakakalimutan (But remember this: we will not be quiet. And not all that are processed via technicality will be forgotten),' she added. De Lima further said the 'fight for truth continues—outside your halls, beyond your rules, and with the people who still believe that justice must prevail.' The House of Representatives impeached Duterte on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint. Duterte was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes.
