
Burst pipe left Eastoft villagers without water for 18 hours
Yorkshire Water has said it will carry out an internal review after dozens of people were left without supplies for up to 18 hours following a burst water main.The incident happened on the A161 Crowle Road overbridge, which takes traffic across the M180 in North Lincolnshire, on 15 February. It affected those in the DN9 and DN17 postcodes, including the villages of Crowle, Epworth and Eastoft.Some customers have criticised the company for not helping them properly and being left without water.During a parliamentary committee meeting on Tuesday, Yorkshire Water's chief executive Nicola Shaw admitted customers were "dissatisfied", as the company apologised in a statement for the incident.
David Lane, who lives in Eastoft, said he was taking a shower when supply ceased.He said: "Suddenly there was no water and it [remained like that] for a good 18 hours."He later contacted Yorkshire Water, which had assured him there would be "a water tanker" arriving in the village by 18:00 GMT. However, the emergency supply never arrived and instead, water bottles had been delivered to the neighbouring villages of Luddington and Crowle, bypassing his hamlet, he said. Mr Lane said he gave up chasing the water company by phone because of a "30-minute wait" time.
Paul Fillingham, a parish councillor in Eastoft, said he had rallied around the village trying to help those in desperate need of water, "which didn't materialise". "[Yorkshire Water] went through the village with an artic load of water and dropped it at the next village," he said. He said while some of those who were vulnerable had received bottles of water, many others were left without.Another Eastoft resident, Sue Healy, said there had been "a lack of information" to keep customers informed about the incident. "I received four text messages the day after, but nothing on the day it actually happened," she said.
In a statement, Yorkshire Water apologised "for any inconvenience caused" by the burst water main and for not updating some customers.However, it said: "The location over the M180 motorway made it more complex than usual to complete a quick repair."The company said it delivered bottled water to 211 vulnerable customers. But could only set up stations "in areas where it is safe to do so and there is space to host the bottled water", and as a result, was "unable to set up bottled water [distribution] in Eastoft". A spokesperson said: "We have spoken with local councillors today to understand their concerns and we will be conducting an internal review to identify any areas for improvement."
'Not good enough'
Speaking to MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee earlier, Ms Shaw said: "We want to achieve a thriving Yorkshire, which is doing the right thing for our customers and for the environment. "We know we are not doing that at the moment."She admitted the company's performance was "not good enough"."The public is obviously dissatisfied and rightly so," she said.Earlier this month, Yorkshire Water apologised after a leaking pipe resulted in a road closure and left hundreds of properties in Goole without supply.When quizzed by MPs why the company only supplied bottled water to 44 of the 600 homes affected, Ms Shaw said they believed "there was still supply"."I think in retrospect that was the wrong decision," she added.

On Ireland's peat bogs, climate action clashes with tradition
CLONBULLOGUE, Ireland, June 6 (Reuters) - As wind turbines on the horizon churn out clean energy, John Smyth bends to stack damp peat - the cheap, smoky fuel he has harvested for half a century. The painstaking work of "footing turf," as the process of drying peat for burning is known, is valued by people across rural Ireland as a source of low-cost energy that gives their homes a distinctive smell. But peat-harvesting has also destroyed precious wildlife habitats, and converted what should be natural stores for carbon dioxide into one of Ireland's biggest emitters of planet-warming gases. As the European Union seeks to make Dublin enforce the bloc's environmental law, peat has become a focus for opposition to policies that Smyth and others criticise as designed by wealthy urbanites with little knowledge of rural reality. "The people that are coming up with plans to stop people from buying turf or from burning turf... They don't know what it's like to live in rural Ireland," Smyth said. He describes himself as a dinosaur obstructing people that, he says, want to destroy rural Ireland. "That's what we are. Dinosaurs. Tormenting them." When the peat has dried, Smyth keeps his annual stock in a shed and tosses the sods, one at a time, into a metal stove used for cooking. The stove also heats radiators around his home. Turf, Smyth says, is for people who cannot afford what he labels "extravagant fuels," such as gas or electricity. The average Irish household energy bill is almost double, according to Ireland's utility regulator, the 800 euros ($906) Smyth pays for turf for a year. Smyth nevertheless acknowledges digging for peat could cease, regardless of politics, as the younger generation has little interest in keeping the tradition alive. "They don't want to go to the bog. I don't blame them," Smyth said. Peat has an ancient history. Over thousands of years, decaying plants in wetland areas formed the bogs. In drier, lowland parts of Ireland, dome-shaped raised bogs developed as peat accumulated in former glacial lakes. In upland and coastal areas, high rainfall and poor drainage created blanket bogs over large expanses. In the absence of coal and extensive forests, peat became an important source of fuel. By the second half of the 20th century, hand-cutting and drying had mostly given way to industrial-scale harvesting that reduced many bogs to barren wastelands. Ireland has lost over 70% of its blanket bog and over 80% of its raised bogs, according to estimates published by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service, respectively. Following pressure from environmentalists, in the 1990s, an EU directive on habitats listed blanket bogs and raised bogs as priority habitats. As the EU regulation added to the pressure for change, in 2015, semi-state peat harvesting firm Bord na Mona said it planned to end peat extraction and shift to renewable energy. In 2022, the sale of peat for burning was banned. An exception was made, however, for "turbary rights," allowing people to dig turf for their personal use. Added to that, weak enforcement of complex regulations meant commercial-scale harvesting has continued across the country. Ireland's Environmental Protection Agency last year reported 38 large-scale illegal cutting sites, which it reported to local authorities responsible for preventing breaches of the regulation. The agency also said 350,000 metric tons of peat were exported, mostly for horticulture, in 2023. Data for 2024 has not yet been published. Pippa Hackett, a former Green Party junior minister for agriculture, who runs a farm near to where Smyth lives, said progress was too slow. "I don't think it's likely that we'll see much action between now and the end of this decade," Hackett said. Her party's efforts to ensure bogs were restored drew aggression from activists in some turf-cutting areas, she said. "They see us as their arch enemy," she added. In an election last year, the party lost nine of the 10 seats it had in parliament and was replaced as the third leg of the centre-right coalition government by a group of mainly rural independent members of parliament. The European Commission, which lists over 100 Irish bogs as Special Areas of Conservation, last year referred Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to protect them and taking insufficient action to restore the sites. The country also faces fines of billions of euros if it misses its 2030 carbon reduction target, according to Ireland's fiscal watchdog and climate groups. Degraded peatlands in Ireland emit 21.6 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year, according to a 2022 United Nations report. Ireland's transport sector, by comparison, emitted 21.4 million tons in 2023, government statistics show. The Irish government says turf-cutting has ended on almost 80% of the raised bog special areas of conservation since 2011. It has tasked Bord na Mona with "rewetting" the bogs, allowing natural ecosystems to recover, and eventually making the bogs once again carbon sinks. So far, Bord na Mona says it has restored around 20,000 hectares of its 80,000 hectare target. On many bogs, scientists monitoring emissions have replaced the peat harvesters, while operators of mechanical diggers carve out the most damaged areas to be filled with water. Bord na Mona is also using the land to generate renewable energy, including wind and solar. Mark McCorry, ecology manager at Bord na Mona, said eventually the bogs would resume their status as carbon sinks. "But we have to be realistic that is going to take a long time," he said. How Yorkshire schools are supporting students during exam stress
Thousands of students across Yorkshire are in the middle of their exam periods, sitting their GSCEs and A Levels. The BBC spoke to teachers and pupils who share their tips for keeping a cool head during a challenging time. "We are open and honest about how tough it will be, it's tough for the staff and it's tough for the students," said Liz Fairhurst, principal of Trinity Academy secondary school, in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, has more than 1,000 pupils and about 200 of them are taking exams at present."We want the very best for them, so we put everything we can in place to support them," Ms Fairhurst said."Primarily we support them not only with a positive outlook for their wellbeing and mental health but also in the academic side of the things." Hafsa, a 15-year-old pupil at Trinity Academy, said there was a lot of support including counselling and one-to-one guidance."I think it's really good," she said she had developed a routine to prepare for revision and tried to ensure she got a good night's sleep before an exam."First thing I do when I go home is make sure I am in a good mood, no stress, make sure I've eaten properly."She said she then watched a show or read a book and - once in a focused mood - began her revision. Fellow pupil Daniel, 16, said he had been anxious ahead of his first exam."I was kind of stressed at first, but then after the first one I found it was a bit less."He said he had also found the preparation the school provided from Year 7 beneficial."We do period sixes, which is like revision sessions, exam workshops and then we get taught to do flashcards."From Year 7 to Year 9 we got taught to do flashcards and mind maps for homework."Jasmine, 15, said she revised most evenings but still made time for dancing to help "de-stress"."I have a timetable around dance and school has helped me fit around it." Ms Fairhurst said building students' resilience ahead of the exam season began in Year 7 and continued through to their exams."How to cope with stress, what to do and what not to do during the exam period."Get enough sleep, eat well, drink a lot of water etc."She said the school also gave out goodie bags, through partnerships with local businesses, which include educational materials alongside snacks and Fairhurst said helping students navigate through exam season was a "huge responsibility"."We all absolutely buy into the fact that positive wellbeing, positive mental health means young people have more chance to thrive and flourish and achieve at school," she Wales High School, at Kiveton near Rotherham, pupils do not take traditional study leave at home and remain in school during the exam of Year 11 Matthew Day said that keeping pupils in school gave them the "best possible chance to work with our specialist subject teachers"."Also where we've got students that need perhaps some emotional or mental health support, we've got counselling and other systems in place that they can access while they are in school."He said he was not convinced pupils would get the same level of support that could be offered in school if they were at home. It's not just on you."She added that parents also needed to avoid putting too much pressure on their children."They might not need to revise at that moment, they might just need that bit of down time, it's not all about 'push, push, push'."It's important to have that off time, to go out and have some fresh air and feel relaxed, so they are prepared for that exam the next day."
