Head granthi denies army statement on air defence guns at Golden Temple
Golden Temple head granthi (priest) Giani Raghbir Singh on Tuesday refuted the statement of Lieutenant General Sumer Ivan D'Cunha, the army's in-charge of air defence, that he had permitted the deployment of air defence guns in the shrine complex to counter potential drone and missile threats from Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.
In an exclusive interview with ANI on Monday, Lieutenant General D'Cunha had said, 'It was very nice that the head granthi of the Golden Temple allowed us to deploy our guns.' He said the unprecedented cooperation from the Golden Temple authorities came after they were briefed on the gravity of the threat, following which Indian Army guns were deployed. Prior to him, Major General Kartik C Seshadri, the general officer commanding (GOC), 15 Infantry Division, said that Golden Temple was targeted by Pakistan forces with missiles and drones and India's air defence system had successfully intercepted and destroyed them to protect the shrine.
Terming the statements 'propaganda', Giani Raghbir Singh said, 'I was not contacted by any army officer. There was no communication on any gun deployment, nor did any such incident occur at Sri Darbar Sahib. I was on leave in the US for 22 days. I went on April 24 and returned on May 14. The conflict started after I left and ended before I returned. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee should probe the army's claims and take departmental action if any SGPC member is found involved in this matter.'
Interacting with the media in Amritsar, Giani Raghbir Singh, who is a former Akal Takht jathedar, said: 'The SGPC cooperated with the government in implementing the blackout at Sri Harmandar Sahib, but such claims (by the generals) are shockingly untrue.'
In an official statement by the SGPC, additional head granthi Giani Amarjit Singh, who was officiating in Giani Raghbir Singh's absence, clarified that the Sri Harmandar Sahib management had cooperated with the district administration's guidelines on the blackout by switching off exterior lights of the complex for the specified period. However, lights at locations where the maryada (religious code of conduct) is observed, were kept on, and the sanctity the place was maintained.
He denied granting any permission to the army and reiterated there was no such deployment at the shrine. Despite the border tension, he said, the religious code of conduct was followed.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said no army officer contacted him and neither was any air defence gun put up at the shrine. He said even during the blackout, devotees continued to do sewa (voluntary service) at Sri Harmandar Sahib and had any such event occurred, the sangat (followers) would have certainly noticed it.
Dhami acknowledged the commendable role played by the armed forces in protecting the country under Operation Sindoor.
Responding to media queries, Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said, 'What has been said (by the generals) does not seem to have happened.'

'World now knows the truth': Shashi Tharoor-led delegation on Operation Sindoor wraps up US visit
The all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, wrapped up the last leg of its multi-nation tour in the United States after meeting Vice President JD Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The delegation arrived in the US on June 3 for a three-day visit. It held meetings on Capitol Hill and in Washington and briefed American officials and leaders about India's Operation Sindoor and the nation's stance on cross-border terrorism. Before the US, the Tharoor-led delegation visited Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and Brazil. The group includes Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Gants Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), and India's former Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Sandhu. The Indian government launched the initiative of sending seven delegations, with members cutting across party lines, to travel to 32 countries and the EU headquarters in Brussels. The goal of this global outreach program is to put forth India's resolve to tackle terrorism against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor. The Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and carried out targeted strikes at nine terror infrastructures linked to outfits such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, etc., in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Baisaran near Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. During Operation Sindoor, more than 100 terrorists were killed. Following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan attempted to launch a retaliatory military action, with cross-border shelling, unarmed aerial vehicles, and drones across J&K, and border regions. However, most of these attacks were thwarted by the Indian armed forces and the nation's air defence system. After four days of intense cross-border fighting, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on May 10.

"The commission is conducting an inquiry": Karnataka Deputy CM Shivakumar on Bengaluru stampede
New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that a commission has been formed that is currently conducting an inquiry into the Bengaluru stampede incident, where 11 people had lost their lives on June 4 during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. He further refrained from commenting further on the matter, noting that the state's Home Minister would provide a detailed response. 'The commission is conducting an inquiry. I will not say much. The Home Minister will reply,' said Shivakumar. Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara, addressing reporters in Tumkur, reiterated that the matter is under investigation and all details regarding the incident would be made public only after the inquiry is complete. 'Everything will be known after the investigation: who said what, what statements were given earlier, when and by whom,' Parameshwara stated. Earlier today, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi reiterated Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje's scathing remark on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM Shivakumar that they had 'blood on their hands' for their 'irresponsible and insensitive' handling of the crowd outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, which led to a stampede that killed 11 people on June 4 during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. Joshi echoed Karandlaje's statement from a press conference on Saturday, in which she accused the leaders of celebrating despite the tragedy and shifting blame and further called for their immediate resignation. 'That is definitely there. I've seen her statement... They have behaved most irresponsibly... Deaths were announced although the celebration was going on... Police have clearly categorically denied that they cannot provide it; it is a risky thing; you don't do it despite all these things... It is the most irresponsible and insensitive behaviour of both the CM (and the Deputy CM),' Joshi said. His remarks align with Karandlaje's earlier demand, 'You have celebrated after their deaths... You have blood on your hands. Listen, Siddaramaiah, listen, DK Shivakumar, you have blood on your hands... You can't blame the Commissioner... You are also a culprit... Singh accused Kishor of being opportunistic, questioning his credibility and motives and pointed out that Uday Singh, appointed by Kishor as the national president of Jan Suraaj, comes from a political family, contradicting Kishor's stance against dynasty politics. 'Founder of Jan Suraaj, Prashant Kishor is a pure businessman. He is here to cheat people. If we talk about dynasty, the national president he has made, Uday Singh, he also comes from a political family,' Sanjay Singh told ANI. Singh challenged Kishor's assertion that he played a crucial role in Nitish Kumar's 2015 victory, asking where Kishor was from 2005 to 2015 and mocked Kishor's association with Congress, saying he 'held the 'khaat rally' and left the Congress on the 'ghaat',' implying that Kishor's efforts did not yield significant results. 'The CM gave him so much respect, and he says that because of him, Nitish Kumar won in 2015. Where was he from 2005-2015? In 2017, he went to UP, and Congress got 114 seats, and won 7 seats under him. He held the 'khaat rally' and left the Congress on the 'ghaat'. Earlier Prashant Kishor hit out at former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on June 5, saying that while Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief has aspirations for his son, Tejaswhi Yadav to be 'King of Bihar', who did not pass class 9, the children of common people are not getting jobs despite completing graduation. Taking a swipe at the RJD chief, he said that he is only praising Lalu Yadav, and people should learn how to take care of their children from him. 'We need to learn from Lalu Prasad Yadav how to worry about children. Lalu ji's son did not pass the 9th class, but Lalu Yadav is so worried about his child that he still wants him to become the king of Bihar. When we say this, people say that we complain about him. No! We are praising Lalu Yadav,' Kishor said while addressing a public gathering in Bihar's Saran on Wednesday. Kishor is in Saran as part of the 'Bihar Badlav Yatra' (Journey for change in Bihar). He further said, 'You look at your condition. Your child has passed matriculation and graduated, but he is still not getting a job, even as a peon.' Earlier on June 4, during a rally at Taraiya area in Saran, Kishor said that the strong response to his rallies shows the public's shared frustration regarding corruption, which plagues Bihar, and reflects a collective desire for change. 'It's not my personal graph that's rising -- it's the growing aspiration of the people who want to see real change in Bihar. These people gathered here are not my relatives, nor are they from my caste. They come from diverse sections of society. But what unites them is a shared frustration -- everyone is fed up with the corruption that plagues Bihar. There is a collective desire for change,' Kishor told reporters. Bihar elections are expected to be held later this year in October or November, however, no official date has been announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI). (ANI)
