A poet who epitomises SC's order on ‘Urdu as tehzeeb'

Time of India27-04-2025

It took the Supreme Court to expose a lie. Rejecting a plea by a former councillor of Patur town in Akola against the use of an Urdu signboard on the municipal council building, the top court succinctly pronounced: "Urdu is the finest specimen of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb or the Hindustani Tehzeeb." Perhaps, nobody in the city conforms more to the top court's definition of Urdu than former IRS officer-poet
Vinod Kumar Tripathi
.
Tripathi, 68, whose pen name is '
Bashar
', embodies the language's basic character. It is boundary and religion neutral. The former bureaucrat-poet recently received a new feather in his cap when legendary former Pakistani cricketer Zaheer Abbas brought a beautiful gift for him. It was a copy of an MPhil thesis that Pakistani scholar
Nadeem Ilahi
completed on Tripathi from Multan-based Bahauddin Zakariya University.

Titled "Vinod Kumar Tripathi: Adbi Khidmaat" (Vinod Kumar Tripathi: Literary Contributions), the research pays tribute to Tripathi's dogged determination to know Urdu, especially its script, the craft of penning poetry, and his refusal to accept the obnoxious view that Urdu belongs to Muslims alone. "Since my second collection of
Urdu poetry
'Meri Zameen Ki Dhoop' also got published in Pakistan, scholar Nadeem Ilahi decided to do an MPhil on me and my work. I am overwhelmed as it reaffirms my faith that poetry knows no boundaries," says Tripathi, seated at the poolside coffee shop of a South Mumbai elite club.

Growing up in the multilingual, multicultural milieu of Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Tripathi honed his skills in poetry writing quite early. Initially using the pen name Tathagat, he edited the college magazine Campus, became a leftist, and briefly drifted to atheism before he mastered political science, taught it briefly at a college, and subsequently entered Civil Services. "Poets are sensitive by nature. They want to change situations, bring change by words. I too would get sad at the people's sorrow and wanted to express my feelings through poetry," he says.
Though he has three collections to his credit (two more are in the pipeline), it was his first collection 'Meri Zameen Ke Log' that became the reason for his learning the Urdu script. He brought this collection in Hindustani in Devnagri script. Posted in Mumbai as a senior Income Tax officer, he befriended many connoisseurs of poetry in the city. Growing up on Sahir Ludhinavi's shairi and ghazal gaiki of the likes of Jagjit Singh, Mehdi Hassan, and Begum Akhtar, he found himself drawn to soirees featuring singers from India and Pakistan.
Once at a concert in Bandra, he met Pakistani singer Shafaqat Hussain and wanted to gift him a copy of his first book. "Mujhe Hindi nahin aati (I do not know Hindi)," said the singer, sending Tripathi into a tizzy. "That day, I realised I cannot do justice till I learn the Urdu script. I briefly hired a tutor, but soon began self-teaching. With the help of books, a dictionary, and an online course, I learnt its script," says the poet, who gets invited to mushairas but refuses to take remunerations. "Poetry writing is not my source of income. I believe in the tradition that those poets who depend solely on writing and reciting poetry deserve the remunerations," he says.
Did he ever face any criticism from family or friends for learning Urdu?
"On the contrary, many ask me how I learnt it. I remember one person on Facebook asking me why I write in Urdu and another suggesting I should not write in the language if I do not know it properly. I suitably answered them and nobody has asked me such stupid questions since," he laughs.
While researcher Nadeem Ilahi admits that he found Tripathi's poetry humanist and compassionate, he also quotes, for validation, testimonies of many eminent scholars, including General Secretary of Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (Hind) Athar Farooqui.
"The humility Vinod Kumar Tripathi shows in his personality also punctuates his poetry. He learnt Urdu to do poetry in this language and worked very hard on prosody," says Farooqui, who has closely read Tripathi's poetry collections.

"India and our delegation received a very positive response", says Priyanka Chaturvedi after delegation's visit

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi , who was part of the Group-2 delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad , said on Sunday that the team received a very positive response from European nations regarding India's stance against terrorism. Speaking to about the trip, Chaturvedi said, "India and our delegation have received a very positive response. This shows that the world understands the fear of terrorism, and it is very important to stay united to address this issue... Everyone is united and equivocal about the fact that terrorism in all its forms has to be condemned." She added that the delegation engaged in talks with government officials, ministers, think tanks, and media representatives across Europe, all of whom expressed consistent support for India's long-standing fight against terrorism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "We went to six different countries and had discussions with media, think-tanks, govt officials, ministers... Everyone believes that the way India has been fighting for decades against terrorism sponsored by Pakistan, the same way countries in Western Europe are facing the same kind of challenges. We told the countries that Pakistan takes loans from the IMF to protect its terror camps. Europe has condemned terrorism in all its forms..." Chaturvedi said. She further exposed how Pakistan has been misleading the world with false narratives. "A completely fake narrative was being spread by their (Pakistan) army as well. Their own Generals were putting video war games in their press conferences and making all sorts of claims. We got a sense of clarity from the officials we met. The Foreign Minister of Germany totally condemned this, and to ensure accountability, everyone is anonymous." Live Events Chaturvedi also noted the wide reach of the delegation's efforts, saying, "This was a successful trip... These 7 delegations had meetings in almost 40 countries. I believe its outcome will be positive. Whether it is the United Nations, the IMF or the World Bank, everyone will adopt an accountability approach towards Pakistan ." The team, led by BJP MP Prasad, visited six nations and held high-level meetings on the issue of terrorism, where they strongly highlighted Pakistan's role in sponsoring terror. Earlier in the day, the all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad returned to India after a diplomatic tour of several European nations. The delegation arrived at the airport in the national capital following a multi-nation visit aimed at strengthening India's ties with European partners. Speaking to the media upon arrival, Prasad said, "It feels great to be back in India. Our delegation visited France, Italy, Denmark, England, Brussels and Germany. We met senior leaders of the Parliament, think-tank and the Indian community. The foreign nations have a lot of anger over the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and all the nations have condemned this. We went to the European Parliament as well. The Indian community was very excited to meet us. A new relationship is going to be established between India and Europe. It was a very satisfying visit..." The recent visit by the all-party Group-2 delegation, led by BJP MP Prasad, took place amid growing international concern over terror attacks, notably the Pahalgam incident in Jammu and Kashmir, which has drawn widespread condemnation from global partners.

Cash discovery row: Justice Varma must quit to avoid removal by Parliament

Resignation is the only option before Justice Yashwant Varma to avoid impeachment by Parliament as the government pushes for bringing a motion to remove the Allahabad High Court judge over alleged corruption. Officials aware of the procedure to appoint and remove Supreme Court and high court judges pointed out that while defending his case before lawmakers in any of the House, Justice Varma can announce that he is quitting and his verbal statement will be considered as his resignation. Should he decide to resign, he will get pension and other benefits entitled to a retired HC judge. But if he is removed by Parliament, he will be deprived of pension and other benefits, they noted. According to Article 217 of the Constitution, a high court judge "may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office." A judge's resignation does not require any approval. A simple resignation letter is sufficient. A judge may give a prospective date to step down. In such cases, the judge can withdraw the resignation before the date he or she has mentioned as the last day in office. Removal by Parliament is the other way a judge can vacate office. Then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had written to the president and the prime minister to remove Justice Varma, mired in the cash discovery row. Justice Khanna's report was based on the findings of a three-judge in house panel which investigated the case. Justice Khanna had prodded Varma to resign but he had refused, sources had earlier said. A motion could be brought in either of the two Houses of Parliament. In the Rajya Sabha, at least 50 members have to sign the motion. In Lok sabha, 100 members have to support it. According to the Judges (Inquiry) Act of 1968, once a motion to remove a judge is admitted in any of the Houses, the speaker or the chairman, as the case may be, will constitute a three-member committee to investigate the grounds on which the removal (or, in popular term, impeachment) has been sought. The committee consists of the chief justice of India (CJI) or a Supreme Court judge, the chief justice of one of the 25 high courts and a " distinguished jurist". Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had last week said the present case is "slightly different" as an in-house committee formed by then CJI Khanna has already submitted its report. "So what is to be done in this matter, we will take a call," he said. The minister said the process has to be followed, but how to "integrate the inquiry already conducted" needs to be decided. "As per the rule, a committee has to be constituted and then the committee has to submit a report and the report will be tabled in the House and discussions will start to impeach. Here, a committee has already been constituted, not by Parliament. But it cannot be brushed aside" as it was constituted by the CJI, he said. Responding to questions that a committee has to be mandatorily formed under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, Rijiju said the speaker will take a decision in this regard. He said reconciling the report of the in-house panel and the one under law is a "secondary matter". The primary objective is to bring the impeachment motion. Monsoon session begins July 21 and ends August 12. A fire incident at Justice Varma's residence in the national capital in March, when he was a judge at the Delhi High Court, had led to the discovery of several burnt sacks of cash at the outhouse. Though the judge claimed ignorance about the cash, the Supreme Court-appointed committee indicted him after speaking to a number of witnesses and recording his statement. The apex court has since transferred him to his parent high court, the Allahabad High Court, where he has not been assigned any judicial work. Supreme Court judge V Ramaswami and Calcutta HC judge Soumitra Sen had earlier faced impeachment proceedings but they resigned. Justice Varma's removal proceedings will be taken up in the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament. This will be the first ever impeachment proceeding to be taken up in the new Parliament building. Israel-Gaza conflict: Thai hostage Nattapong Pinta's body recovered; 95 Palestinians killed in fresh strikes

Photo provided by the Hostage's Family Forum shows Nattapong Pinta, with his wife and son (Image: AP) Israel on Saturday said it had recovered the body of a Thai hostage taken into Gaza during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. The announcement came as fighting intensified, with Gaza health officials reporting at least 95 more Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours. The Thai hostage was identified as Nattapong Pinta, who had travelled to Israel to work in agriculture and was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October attack that sparked the ongoing war. Israel said his body was recovered in the Rafah area of southern Gaza. Authorities believe he was killed early in the war. Pinta's remains were reportedly retrieved in an operation against the Mujahideen Brigades, a small armed group which had taken responsibility for several hostages. The Israeli military also said it killed the group's leader, As'ad Aby Sharaiya, in a separate strike in Gaza City. According to Thailand's foreign ministry, two more Thai citizens are still unaccounted for. Thailand had one of the highest numbers of foreign nationals abducted in the Hamas assault, with many Thai workers employed on farms near Israel's southern border. At least 46 Thai nationals have died during the conflict, the ministry said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant confirmed the retrieval. Fifty-five hostages are believed to remain in Gaza. Israel says more than half of them are no longer alive. Families of hostages gathered again in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, urging the Israeli government to reach a ceasefire agreement and secure the release of those still held. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continued across Gaza, with reports of entire families being killed. One strike in Gaza City killed six members of a family, including two children, according to doctors at Shifa and al-Ahli hospitals. Another strike in northern Gaza reportedly killed seven people, including a mother and five children. The war has left over 54,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza's health ministry. Israel says its actions are in response to the October 7 attacks, which killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the abduction of 251 hostages. Only eight have been rescued alive so far.
