Ighodaro's late goal clinches AmaZulu derby win over Arrows
Etiosa Ighodaro scored at the death to hand AmaZulu a 1-0 win over Durban rivals Golden Arrows and claim the city's bragging rights at the Mpumalanga Stadium yesterday.
Usuthu moved into sixth place on the Premiership standings and boosted their chances of making next season's MTN8 competition, while Abafana Bes'thende remained in 11th place.
With the game seemingly heading for a tightly contested draw, Nigerian-born Ighodaro emerged late to give AmaZulu a deserved lead in the 84th minute.
Usuthu's top scorer scored his sixth goal of the season as he barged his way past a defender to head home a Tshepang Moremi floated cross.
Another instalment of the Durban derby took the stage under perfect sunny conditions in Hammarsdale, with both teams eager to match up to the heat of the weather.
And having played out to a goalless draw in the first round of this fixture, it was clear the two teams were eager to avoid a similar fate in this encounter, as the game began at a high intensity.
Arrows were sporting fresh faces on the bench as their recruitment of Royal AM's players continued, with Thabo Matlaba featuring and Sabelo Sithole making his full debut, while Sphesihle Msomi sat on the bench alongside Shadrack Kobedi.
AmaZulu and their coach Arthur Zwane have been going through a sticky patch at this stage of the season, having lost four and won one of their last five before this game, and this showed in their first-half struggles to create any tangible chances.
Their best opportunity came in the 46th minute, with striker Etiosa Ighodaro almost finding the net with a speculative long-range strike.
The Nigerian-born forward received the ball on the half turn onto his 'wrong' foot, before unleashing with the left, but Edward Maova paddled back before parrying the effort away.
The hosts would've been the most disappointed of the two teams at halftime, having failed to call Richard Ofori into any kind of save in the opening 45 minutes.
Therefore, it came as no surprise when the hosts made the first move as they introduced Angelo van Rooi for Sithole at halftime.
That change didn't seem to affect the flow of the game as AmaZulu continued to control the tempo and looked dangerous.
Arrows' first real chance came in the 65th minute off an AmaZulu passing error that saw the ball fall for second-half substitute Bongani Cele.
However, the 26-year-old shied away from the responsibility and tried to lay it off for the on-rushing Siyanda Mthanti, who failed to control the ball as it rolled to the feet of Ofori.
That moment seemed to switch the momentum for the hosts as another ball fell nicely for Mthanti, again this time from a lobbed cross into the far post.

SAFA may dodge sanctions despite Bafana Bafana's player suspension oversight
In a significant development that arose this week after all the airtime arising from their engagement with the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, the South African Football Association (SAFA) is on the verge of evading sanctions for a serious oversight. At the heart of the discussions was an incident involving Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena, whose suspension oversight could lead to severe repercussions for the association and their FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying aspirations. However, indications suggest that SAFA is likely to sidestep any penalties. This came after the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was fielded in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho even though he was suspended. He picked up two yellow cards in previous qualifiers against Benin and Zimbabwe and was not eligible to play against Lesotho. Bafana, who defeated Lesotho 2-0 in that game, lead Group C with a five-point gap over second-placed rivals Rwanda and Benin. The other group teams are Nigeria (seven points), Lesotho (six) and Zimbabwe (four). CAF's secretariat plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of its tournaments, including the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying. They ensure match officials are well-informed about suspended players in meetings with match and team officials before the start of matches. This structured approach allows designated match commissioners and referees to be aware of any players who are barred from participating, thus upholding fairness in competition. In the case of the SA versus Lesotho match, this was not done, and it was not known that Mokoena had incurred an automatic suspension. Members of parliament deplored this disturbing display of administrative oversight and Bafana's management was put through the wringer for failing to execute basic organisational duties. This significant error went unnoticed by both the team and opponents, Lesotho. Two days after this match, the Nigerian Football Federation reportedly alerted Lesotho officials to this critical oversight. Lesotho and Nigeria have not formally announced protests to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA regarding this contentious match. Despite the absence of an official filing, both nations are holding onto a flicker of hope that FIFA might intervene against the South Africans, sparking a potential firestorm in regional football politics. The window for protest submission has closed, as protests filed beyond the stipulated time frame are unlikely to be upheld, however, optimism lingers in both nations. The unresolved issues surrounding recent matches have left stakeholders in Lesotho and Nigeria questioning the integrity of competition and fairness within the African football sphere. A Nigerian-based football website has raised the Mokoena saga with monotonous regularity in the hope that CAF and FIFA will be strung into action. This has ignited fervent discussions in the football community across Africa. If CAF or FIFA intervened, it would affect the log positions of Nigeria, Lesotho, and South Africa. With only four rounds left in the qualifying matches, the possibility of FIFA's intervention has raised eyebrows as teams vie for a coveted spot in the 2026 World Cup. Changes in Nigeria and Lesotho's positions could emerge if SAFA is punished and this potential turn of events could drastically alter the landscape of the Group C World Cup qualifying rounds. Historically, FIFA has not shied away from taking stringent measures against teams that breach its rules, even in cases where there has not been an official complaint or protest lodged.

Kaizer Chiefs interested in free signing of top PSL prospect!
Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to make a squad overhaul ahead of the next season, which promises to be busy. Chiefs may have failed to qualify for next season's MTN8 but they won the Nedbank Cup meaning continental football. That will mean traveling throughout the continent, while balancing out the domestic competitions. This, could prove to be a rigorous schedule for Chiefs , with the amount of games they'd be playing weekly. This would then present a challenge to their management to ensure they have adequate squad depth to be able to cope with it all. As it stands, they have a squad filled with more quantity than quality. They will have to attack the coming market with intent if they're to change their fortunes. It is therefore no surprise that they have been linked to quite a few players of a high calibre, to try and improve their fortunes. Chiefs will also have to move smarter in the market and target younger players with PSL experience. This seems to already be happening, as earlier in the week, this publication reported negotiations for Aphiwe Baliti. The 23-year-old is currently at SuperSport United and is earmarked to compete for the left-back position next season. Now according to Unplayable, he may not be the only youngster from Matsatsantsa to join Chiefs next week. According to the X account, Chiefs are also interested in signing Ime Okon on a free transfer. '𝕋ℝ𝔸ℕ𝕊𝔽𝔼ℝ 𝕌ℙ𝔻𝔸𝕋𝔼 Two players from SuperSport United linked with Kaizer Chiefs; Aphiwe Baliti and Ime Okon. Okon's contract with SSU expires 30 June 2025.' .Wrote the publication Okon has previous been linked with moves abroad and recently made his Bafana Bafana debut in the COSAFA Cup. He has been touted as a top prospect for the country at just 20-years-old. Chiefs fans, would you love to sign him on a free? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab.
