Changing of the guard as De Sousa ends O'Shea's 12-year reign in UAE racing

Khaleej Times13-04-2025

As the curtain fell on another electrifying UAE racing season, it was Silvestre de Sousa who stood tall etching his name into local racing folklore by clinching his first UAE Jockeys' Championship.
And he — the Brazilian-born, British-based rider — did it in emphatic style, ending the remarkable 12-year reign of champion jockey Tadhg O'Shea in a gripping title race that went down to the wire.
De Sousa finished the season with 54 wins, seven clear of O'Shea, sealing the deal in the final stretch of the campaign. It was his dominant ride aboard Dubai Future in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup at the glittering Dubai World Cup meeting that all but wrapped things up, giving him a decisive edge heading into the final meetings at Al Ain and Abu Dhabi.
'I'm just delighted with the kind of season I've had,' De Sousa said. 'To be the leading rider in my first full season in the UAE means a lot. It's never easy — especially here in the UAE where it is ultra-competitive. But I had incredible support from the boss (Musabbeh Al Mheiri) and the Yas Racing team. I'm really grateful.'
It was a season of comebacks and crowning moments. For Emirati trainer Musabbeh Al Mheiri, it was a return to glory. A decade after his first title in the 2014–15 season, the 64-year-old veteran rolled back the years to take home his second UAE Trainers' Championship with 40 winners. He edged out Jebel Ali Stables handler Michael Costa (38) who had to settle for second place for the second successive year despite an epic season and former three-time Champion handler Ernst Oertel (36) in one of the most hotly contested battles in recent memory.
'It was a very competitive season, more competitive than the first time I won, I think,' said Al Mheiri. 'There are so many good trainers and talented horses around now. To finish on top again after all these years — it's really special.'
Al Mheiri, who as a youngster rode bareback races on the beaches of Ajman, never imagined a future like this. Just last year, he saddled his 500th winner, and this year he stood head and shoulders above his rivals.
On the ownership front, the powerhouse that is Yas Racing — under the patronage of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice-President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, — clinched the coveted Owners' Championship. Their Purebred Arabian operation was as formidable as ever, with De Sousa often the man guiding their contenders to the winner's circle.
For De Sousa, 44, it's another chapter in an extraordinary global journey. A three-time British champion jockey and winner of the 2014 Dubai World Cup aboard African Story for Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin, the Brazilian's UAE story has been long in the making. He first rode here two decades ago, but only now, after committing to a full campaign, has he claimed the top spot.
'I've been coming here for years,' he said. 'But this time felt different. I had strong partnerships and the hunger to push all the way. Riding for Musabbeh and Yas Racing gave me a real platform, and winning again in Godolphin blue on World Cup night — that was the cherry on top.'
And as the 2024-2025 UAE racing season wrapped with fireworks over Abu Dhabi and the echoes of cheering fans still lingering at Meydan where it hosted the 29th running of the Dubai World Cup, it was clear: the UAE racing scene had delivered yet another unforgettable chapter.

This landmark move signals a powerful shift in motorsport accessibility and diversity, reinforcing the UAE's commitment to nurturing next-generation talent and establishing itself as a global hub for motorsport excellence. A rising star in the karting circuit, Atiqa has already made a name for herself with her fearless driving, consistent podium finishes, and an unwavering passion for racing. She has competed in some of the world's most prestigious karting championships, including the Rotax Euro Trophy, Rotax International Trophy, IAME Series (UAE and Europe), WSK Euro Series, WSK Super Master Series, and the Champions of the Future Academy. The timing of this partnership aligns with the official launch of the AKCEL GP Academy—the cornerstone development initiative of AKCEL GP, the UAE-based high-performance motorsport team competing in FIA F4, Formula Regional Middle East Championship, and FIA F3. Opening in Abu Dhabi in August 2025, the Academy will serve as a cutting-edge training ground for the next generation of racing talent from the UAE and abroad. The Academy's inaugural batch will feature 15 promising young drivers and is committed to offering a structured and competitive pathway beginning with elite karting championships and advancing through the ranks of single-seater racing. Speaking on Atiqa's signing, Amit Kaushal, Group Chairman of AKCEL Group, said, 'Atiqa's talent, focus, and composure on track are well beyond her years. We're proud to welcome her to the AKCEL GP family and support her long-term journey toward Formula 1. As Atiqa begins her training in Abu Dhabi, she will follow a carefully structured development program designed to prepare young drivers for the demands of professional motorsport. Her training will combine simulator sessions, physical conditioning, mental coaching, race craft development, and in-depth performance analysis. A key focus of her time with AKCEL GP Academy will be competing in championships across the UAE and Europe, providing her with essential on-track experience and exposure to high-level competition early in her career. The goal is to lay a strong foundation of skills, discipline, and racecraft with a clear vision: Formula 1 as the ultimate destination. Reflecting on this new chapter in her journey, Atiqa said, 'Racing is everything to me. It's where I feel strong, fast, and free. Joining AKCEL GP Academy is a dream come true, and I want to show young girls like me from Dubai and India that we can compete at the highest levels. One day, I hope to race in Formula 1, and I'm ready to work hard to get there.' The UAE's support for motorsport development has grown rapidly over the past decade. The nation is home to internationally acclaimed circuits such as Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi and Dubai Autodrome and hosts one of the most prestigious events on the racing calendar, the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Barcelona's Raphinha named LaLiga Player of the Season

Barcelona winger Raphinha was named LaLiga Player of the Season on Friday, after the Brazilian played a major role in his side winning the domestic treble, with club teammate Lamine Yamal named Best Under-23 player. Raphinha contributed 34 goals and 25 assists in 57 club games across all competitions, with Barca winning the league title, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The 28-year-old signed for Barcelona in 2022 from Leeds United and recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the Spanish club until 2028. Raphinha scored a late goal to put Barcelona ahead in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan, only for the Italians to level in stoppage time and net an extra-time winner. That was Raphinha's 13th goal in 14 games of this season's competition. Yamal, still only 17, confirmed his status as one of the world's top talents after last season's breakthrough campaign, with the winger netting nine league goals along with five in the Champions League.

Forward Delap joins Chelsea ahead of Club World Cup

Forward Liam Delap has joined Chelsea on a six-year contract ahead of this month's Club World Cup, leaving Ipswich Town after they were relegated from the Premier League, the West London side said on Wednesday. Media reports say Chelsea signed the 22-year-old in a deal worth $40.66 million. The Winchester-born former Manchester City player helps plug a forward shortage at Chelsea before the Club World Cup, with Nicolas Jackson, who scored 10 league goals this season, being the only prominent forward available. Attacking midfielder Cole Palmer led the club's scoring charts in the Premier League this season with 15 goals. Delap, who was shortlisted for the Young Player of the Year award, scored 12 goals in 37 league appearances for Ipswich this season as they finished 19th. "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach," Delap said in a Chelsea statement. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." Chelsea kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Club Leon on June 16.
