Anil Ambani (File) In another major success for businessman Anil Ambani, his company, Reliance Infrastructure, has scripted history in India's defense sector, by becoming the first private firm to independently carry out a complete upgrade programme of a military aircraft without an original manufacturer (OEM). According to details, Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infra has successfully upgraded 55 Dornier-228 aircraft under a contract signed with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), in which US-based Genesys Aerosystems was also a technical partner. The initial contract was for 37 aircraft, but Reliance Infra secured another order for 18 more Dornier-228 upgrades after successfully completing the first order. The entire project will cost an estimated Rs 350 crore. Reliance Infra eyeing upgrade contracts worth Rs 5000 crore Meanwhile, the Anil Ambani-led company is now eyeing upgrade opportunities worth Rs 5,000 crore in the defense sector over the next 7 to 10 years. As per experts, Indian armed forces have thousands of aging military aircraft and helicopters with a service life of about 30-40 years, but these platforms require regular and timely upgrades, including upgradation of avionics, mission systems and safety equipment, to keep them relevant in the evolving modern warfare scene. Upgrade and maintenance can cost up to 200-300% of the platform's original cost over its lifecycle, and the global market for upgrading older military platforms with latest hardware is pegged at around Rs 5 lakh crore, which is expected to hit Rs 7 lakh crore in the next few years. Anil Ambani's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' plan Notably, Anil Ambani's Reliance Infra is partnering with global defense firms as it plans to scale up its upgrade services for military aircraft and other platforms, a move which aligns with the Narendra Modi government's ambitious 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, that aims to make India self-reliant in manufacturing, including defense. Reliance Infrastructure is also working closely with French defense manufacturer, Thales, as part of the Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) programme of Rafale fighter jets in India, Additionally, Reliance Defence, a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, has partnered with German arms maker Rheinmetall AG to manufacture propellants and explosives in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district. The two partners will set up a factory as part of the proposed 1,000-acre Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City. Earlier, Reliance Defence signed similar deals with French Dassault Aviation and Thales, in addition to inking a deal with German arms maker Rheinmetall AG to manufacture artillery shells and ammunition in India. In a recent statement, Anil Ambani revealed that his goal was to make Reliance Defence among India top three defence exporters.
