Foreign minister's view on Hamas-Israel war 'far from balanced'
Article content
Article content
I read with incredulity Carson Jerema's column regarding new Foreign Minister Anita Anand's position on Israel and Gaza. It caused me great concern regarding the future and safety of Canadian Jews and Canada's relationship with Israel.
Article content
In her comments made a day after being sworn in, Anand made no mention of the facts that Hamas has held the Palestinian population of Gaza hostage for more than 18 years and that it suppresses and viciously punishes any dissenting voices. She appears unaware that there was a ceasefire, violently ended by Hamas in the early hours of October 7, 2023 with the attack that murdered over 1,200 Israelis and took another 250 hostage. She fails to address the fact that Hamas hijacks aid trucks sent into Gaza for its own use, and sells the food on the black market to its own people for outrageous prices. She neglects to mention the billions of dollars of international aid sent to Gaza over the years and stolen by Hamas for the construction of tunnels and to purchase weapons.
Article content
Article content
She also fails to mention the multiple attempts over the past 20 years made by Israel to establish a two-state solution. She blindly accepts mortality data in Gaza, supplied by Hamas, while neglecting the fact that many of the Israelis murdered and taken hostage Oct. 7 were strong supporters of the peace process, including the roles they played in transporting Palestinian civilians of Gaza to Israel for health care.
Article content
Article content
She espouses a balanced view of the crisis, but her view is far from balanced. Her pro-Palestinian opinions are very apparent. She is totally ignorant of the facts and the situation on the ground. There are many of us in the Jewish community who would be happy to educate her.

Article content
Canadians should be very proud! Hamas has congratulated us on our recent foreign policy stance on Israel and Gaza.
Article content
It should warm the cockles of every Canadian heart that a terrorist group, dedicated to eradicating a UN-recognized, democratically elected country and its entire civilian population, is in harmony with us.
Article content
Anita Anand may be new to the foreign ministry but she is no rookie and the Israel-Hamas war is not a new issue. That her first order of business was to condemn Israel has to be policy and the explanation for it is obvious. There are more voters who will vote against Israeli interests than for them, regardless of the morality of supporting terrorists versus an allied democracy. The Liberals have, over the years, shown that their only principles are those that will keep them in power.

Matt MacFarlane chosen as leader of P.E.I. Green Party

Matt MacFarlane has been elected leader of the P.E.I. Green Party. The Borden-Kinkora MLA got 507 of the 647 votes cast. He was running against former Green Party MLA Hannah Bell. The leadership convention took place at Bluefield High School in North Wiltshire Saturday. It was originally scheduled for a smaller venue, but was relocated after the party's membership quadrupled to 800 in the lead-up to the vote. The Greens have been without a leader since Peter Bevan-Baker left the position after the 2023 provincial general election. That vote saw the party tumble from Official Opposition status. Their eight seats were cut to two — Bevan-Baker and Karla Bernard, who stepped up as interim leader. The Greens added a third seat in the legislature after MacFarlane won a February 2024 byelection in Borden-Kinkora. That was triggered by the resignation of former Progressive Conservative MLA Jamie Fox, who stepped down to run for the federal Conservatives. Byelections are set to be called before the end of the summer in Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park and Brackley-Hunter River. Those seats were left vacant when former PC cabinet minister Natalie Jameson stepped down to run in the federal election for the Conservatives, and Dennis King stepped down as premier and MLA. The Greens and the P.E.I. Liberal Party each have three seats in the legislature, so the upcoming byelections could decide which party becomes the Official Opposition.

Young CAQ members attack unions at their convention in Lévis

At their convention in Lévis on Saturday, young Coalition Avenir Québec members said unions engage in 'undemocratic' practices, echoing arguments put forward by the Legault government. They deplored assemblies with 'prohibitive conditions,' 'radical' positions, and a 'lack of transparency' in how dues are used. Education Minister Bernard Drainville has made similar comments and continues to attack the Fédération autonome de l'enseignement (FAE), which he claims has become a 'political movement.' The FAE is challenging Bill 21 in court, which prohibits certain government employees, including teachers, from wearing religious symbols, upsetting the Legault government. In a brief speech on Saturday, Drainville expressed his delight that the CAQ's new generation, which he describes as a 'spark plug,' is tackling trade unionism and giving a 'good kick to the hornet's nest.' 'Is it normal for a union like the FAE to call an unlimited general strike without a strike fund, but have the money to challenge Bill 21?' he asked. 'Something is not right. Why are we letting them do this? ... A union is not a political party,' said the outgoing president of the youth wing, Aurélie Diep, in a similar vein. The theme of Saturday's convention borrows an expression often used by Premier François Legault: 'It's going to shake things up.' At the end of the discussion, the young CAQ members adopted three proposals: Restrict the use of membership fees ... so that they are not used for partisan purposes Make it mandatory to publish detailed information on the expenses of union and student associations. Submit resolutions ... authorizing the calling of a strike, the adoption of a position or an expense that does not fall within their mission to a majority vote of all their members. Both the vice-president of the Quebec Student Union, Audrey Fortin, and the president of the FAE, Mélanie Hubert, reacted on Saturday by accusing the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) of hypocrisy. 'It's fascinating to be lectured on democracy by a party that, at 4:30 this morning, passed a law under gag order,' Hubert said in a phone interview. 'The CAQ was elected with 41 per cent of the vote in 2022 when 66 per cent of the population voted,' she recalled. For her part, Fortin noted that barely 100 young CAQ members were present in the room to vote on the proposals that were submitted. Developing defence and mining In addition to addressing trade union issues, the young CAQ members discussed the economy, bureaucratic streamlining and internships abroad. In particular, they propose 'developing the defence industry in Quebec and focusing on this high value-added sector to diversify the Quebec economy.' They also want to 'reduce red tape in the mining sector by 50 per cent to make it easier than ever to exploit our critical and strategic minerals.' Meanwhile, Legault is scheduled to deliver a speech on Saturday afternoon following the election of a new executive. This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French June 7, 2025.
