Festival to promote young talent kicks off
KARACHI:
The Youth Gala Festival, organised by the Sindh government, opened on Saturday with the aim to promote the creative and athletic talents of the youth. Well-known singer Shahzad Roy kicked off the event by launching the calligraphy competitions.
Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi inaugurated the festival at a ceremony.
The festival, which runs until Sunday, is part of an initiative led by Sindh Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs to promote the creative and athletic talents of Sindh's youth. It features a wide range of activities, including sports competitions, art exhibitions, and cultural performances.
The opening ceremony featured various sports contests such as tug of war, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, snooker, carrom, chess, claw fighting, and more. Cultural activities like calligraphy, painting, debate, and mushaira (poetry recital) are also being held to celebrate the rich artistic heritage of the province.

Gaurav Taneja defends deceased pilots in Air India crash; calls out big companies for shifting blame: ‘It gets easy to claim insurance'
Gaurav Taneja, popularly known for his YouTube channel Flying Beast, recently shared his opinion on the Air India aircraft that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. He responded to online claims blaming the deadly crash on a mistake made by the pilots. Defending the pilots, Gaurav explained why he believes the crash did not occur due to pilot error. For the unversed, Gaurav served as a commercial pilot for over a decade and was a captain at Air Asia before getting involved in a whistleblower scandal. In the video he shared, Gaurav said, 'Pilots outside India are claiming that the crash happened because the Indian pilots retracted flap instead of the gear because the videos before the crash show that the gear is down. Pilots gear up when the flight is 100 feet above the surface. They said wings are supposed to create lift, which is supposed to keep the aircraft in the air and when you retract the flaps there is a loss of lift and that loss of lift caused the flight to go down but I have a serious problem with this theory.' He added, 'It's very easy to blame the pilots when they are not there to defend themselves. Boeing and Air India both are big companies so leave them and let's blame the pilot. Also, it gets easy to claim insurance if you blame it on the pilot. That is one more reason for big companies to not take it on themselves. Americans think Indian pilots aren't very competent but that's not the case.' Gaurav insisted that this theory is false, in his view, as both handles — for flap and gear — are not located near each other and are far apart, making it very unlikely for a pilot to confuse the two. He also demonstrated that even if the pilots accidentally pulled the wrong handle, they had a window of 18 seconds to correct the mistake. However, he admitted that he has never flown a Boeing 787, which is the model that crashed, but noted that he has flown Airbus aircraft, which have similar functionalities. 'There is Murphy's Law that if something can go wrong, it will go wrong. If something has to go wrong, it will go wrong whether it happens in one or ten years. This has happened with so many pilots. Even if you take the flap up, the whole process takes 18 seconds,' he said. He further pointed out that even if one pilot made the mistake, the other pilot would likely catch it as it would fall within their peripheral vision, allowing them to correct the error. Gaurav noted that such incidents had occurred in the past due to confusion between flaps and gear, which is why changes were implemented. 'Pilots were mixing gear with flap. It has happened before but a flight doesn't crash because of this reason. None of the aircrafts have gone down because of this reason,' he said. Gaurav shared another point defending the pilots, stating, 'Even if the flap is zero and both the pilots made the mistake, an aircraft is certified to fly on a single engine, on full weight, full fuel and everything.' He ended his video saying, 'At this point of time everything is an assumption. However, I don't agree with this theory.'

Palm Springs experiences hottest day of 2025; will the city see cooler weather this week?
The temperature in Palm Springs soared to 117 degrees Sunday afternoon, giving the city its hottest day of the year so far, according to National Weather Service data. While that temperature was enough to make Sunday the hottest day of 2025, the high fell a few degrees shy of the record high for June 15. NWS meteorologist Sam Zuber said the record high temperature of 120 degrees at Palm Springs International Airport was set in 2021. That temperature was only four degrees shy of the city's all-time high of 124 degrees, which was set last year on Independence Day. Prior to Sunday, the highest temperature so far in June had been 110 degrees set twice on June 8 and June 9. The average high temperature for June 15 is 105 degrees but will climb to 107 degrees by the end of the month. Zuber said the unseasonable heat is a result of a large area of high pressure settled over the southwestern United States and stretching from California to the four corners region. As if the heat wasn't oppressive enough, another familiar weather challenge was also brewing across the Coachella Valley. South Coast AQMD issued an air quality alert Sunday afternoon that warned that strong winds could result in blowing dust and unhealthy air quality through 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The warning stated that gusts of up to 50 mph are expected in the wind-prone San Gorgonio Pass, while gusts of 25 to 35 mph are expected in both Palm Springs and Indio although some areas in between were expected to see lighter winds. While gusts of above 40 mph had already been recorded at Whitewater on Sunday afternoon, the winds were only just starting to pick up in most of the rest of the valley. South Coast AQMD's online air quality map showed the air in the vast majority of the valley as rated 'moderate' as of around 4 p.m. Sunday. Desert residents can expect only limited relief in the coming days, Zuber said, with temperatures of above 110 degrees expected on Monday and then again on Wednesday before things gradually cool going into next weekend. Biocon shares in focus as company reportedly plans to launch QIP to raise up to Rs 4,500 crore
Biocon shares are in focus after the company is reportedly preparing to launch a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) to raise as much as ₹4,500 crore, possibly as early as this week, according to a Moneycontrol report. Sources familiar with the development told Moneycontrol that the deal has been in the works for some time and may be launched imminently.
