Kidnapped Bloemfontein learner still missing as cop's case delayed again
It has been three weeks since the kidnapping of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi. SAPS have deployed maximum resources to find the missing Martie Du Plessis Special School Bloemfontein learner.
Bloemfontein Courant reports that according to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, investigations are ongoing and maximum resources have been deployed.
Free State police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane told Bloemfontein Courant that external communication has been cut off due to the sensitivity of the case.
The case of the 42-year-old police officer charged with kidnapping and extortion was first heard on June 13 and initially postponed to yesterday to allow for an ID parade with the victim, who is still missing.
It has now been further postponed to Monday.
Free State launches school safety campaign
The Free State Department of Education launched the Provincial School Safety Campaign a week after Kamogelo's kidnapping. According to the department, the campaign aims to reignite conversations around bullying, gangsterism, gender-based violence, sexism, and substance use in schools.
'Our schools are not always the safe spaces they ought to be. For too many children, walking into a classroom comes with anxiety, not assurance,' said HOD Adv Tsoarelo Malakoane at the launch at Tjhebelopele Primary School in Bloemfontein.
Motheo education director December Moloi shared concerning statistics, calling for intensified parental involvement and contributions from all corners of society.

Watch: Calls to deny bail as accused appears in court for White River shooting

Watch: Calls to deny bail as accused appears in court for White River shooting The community of White River in Mpumalanga remains gripped by emotion and speculation as Marco Schalekamp (41) appeared in the local magistrate's court today for his bail application. Lowvelder reports this follows the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Pieter Burger and the wounding of Arno van Niekerk on June 5. Dozens of supporters, including farm workers and friends of the victims, gathered outside court with placards calling for bail to be denied. Inside, new testimony painted a picture of a man with cross-border ties, under scrutiny not only for the shooting but also for his past. Watch the video: Schalekamp told the court he is not a flight risk and intends to stand trial. Investigating officer Sergeant Mxolisi Keis testified that Schalekamp frequently left South Africa for extended periods. While the accused denied holding multiple passports, the state raised concerns about possible undisclosed travel documents and foreign connections. His estranged wife also came forward, alleging years of abuse – claims Schalekamp denied. Van Niekerk and his mother were present in court. She told Lowvelder she attended to 'see justice prevail'. Lowvelder approached both Schalekamp's estranged wife and Van Niekerk's mother for comment. Only the latter responded, offering a brief but resolute statement. In the meantime, the case continues to draw heated debate online. Social media users are demanding clarity on who shot Schalekamp – and whether others allegedly involved will face charges. The bail hearing will continue tomorrow. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak. Suspect arrested after 8 killed in Umlazi shooting

KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has commended the arrest of a suspect in connection with the recent brutal mass murder that shocked the community of Umlazi. This follows the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with the murder of eight people on May 16 at the Zama informal settlement in U-section, Umlazi, south-west of Durban. The victims – six men and two women aged between 22 and 40 – were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds. According to the police report, the incident took place when unknown armed men entered the informal settlement and opened fire. Eight victims died on the scene. The mass killing, which claimed multiple lives and left families shattered, drew national attention and widespread condemnation. Ntuli visited the affected area and called for a multi-agency response to restore peace and strengthen community policing. In a statement today, Ntuli hailed the arrest as a significant breakthrough. 'This arrest is a clear indication that our law enforcement agencies are capable, committed, and determined to restore safety and dignity in our communities. We commend the SAPS, the Hawks, and all intelligence-led operations that worked relentlessly around the clock to ensure this progress,' Ntuli said. Ntuli emphasised that the people of Umlazi and KZN at large deserve to live without fear, and 'no individual or group has the right to undermine the safety and security of our communities'. He added that the provincial government is intensifying its collaboration with the police and other safety structures to dismantle criminal syndicates, improve visibility in hotspots, and fast-track the installation of community-based crime prevention programmes. The premier also appealed to community members to work hand in hand with law enforcement agencies. 'Our fight against crime is a collective one. We urge residents to report any suspicious activities and to co-operate fully with ongoing investigations. It is only through unity and active citizenry that we can defeat crime and reclaim our communities.' As the case proceeds through the justice system, Ntuli assured that the provincial government will continue to provide the necessary psychosocial support to the victims' families and work to ensure that justice is served without delay. – Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
