Worcestershire county lines drug dealer jailed for eight years
A drug dealer has been jailed for eight years, bringing the county lines operation he was involved in to an end, police have said.Zach Pearson, 19, formerly of Washington Street, Kidderminster, was sentenced earlier after pleading guilty to drugs and firearms offences at Worcester Crown Court.County lines refers to the name of a phone number or "deal-line" used to run a drug-dealing network. Pearson was involved in the EMZ line, later known as the MJ line, West Mercia Police said.After the hearing, Det Con Paul Modley said illegal drugs brought "misery and harm", adding: "His arrest and conviction not only mean the line is terminated but also a viable firearm has been taken off the streets."
Pearson was initially arrested on 12 September at a property in Cranham Drive, Warndon, Worcester, after reports he was supplying class A drugs there.A search of the building uncovered a handgun wrapped in a plastic bag in the kitchen and live ammunition.On 19 September, police carried out a safeguarding check on a drug user in Crickley Drive, Worcester, and a balaclava-wearing Pearson attempted to escape through a living room window, officers said.Police seized £1,470 in cash from his pocket, drugs paraphernalia and a phone containing text messages about drugs for sale.
On 3 October, as officers carried out a warrant at a property in Brookthorpe Close, Worcester, they found Pearson in the toilet with the light off, potentially attempting to dispose of drugs.Police said he had with him a black bag containing crack cocaine and heroin with an estimated street value of about £6,800.Pearson admitted being involved in the supply of Class A drugs, possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, possession of an illegal firearm, and possession of prohibited ammunition.He also pleaded guilty to acquiring or using criminal property, for which he was given a 12-month jail term to run concurrently with the eight-year term.

Chicago police say an officer was accidentally shot and killed by her partner
A Chicago police officer was unintentionally shot and killed by her partner after they chased a suspect into an apartment and encountered another person with a rifle, officials said. Krystal Rivera, 36, a four-year veteran of the department, is survived by a 10-year-old daughter. The partner was the only person who fired a weapon, and the 'gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera,' city police said in a statement Friday. An autopsy showed she was shot in the back. Rivera died at a hospital late Thursday, less than an hour after being shot. Colleagues had brought her to the hospital in a squad car that crashed and caught on fire due to a malfunction, according to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. She was then transported in another squad car. The person who allegedly brandished the rifle was taken into custody, police said. They did not immediately say what charges the person would face. The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. on Thursday as Rivera's tactical unit conducted a stop on someone suspected of having a weapon. A chase ensued that ended in the apartment. Investigators later found three weapons at the scene, police said. Snelling called Rivera 'young, vibrant and a hard worker.' Her mother told The Chicago Sun-Times that she had dreamed of being a police officer since she was young. 'For me, it's a privilege,' Rivera told the Sun-Times when she graduated from the academy in 2021. 'I come from a family of serving. To help people in need, that's my calling.'

America's worst state for active shooters revealed
Texas saw more active shooter reports than any other state in 2024 — with disturbing incidents unfolding everywhere from church pews to parking lots, according to a shocking new FBI report. The Lone Star State logged four separate active shooter events last year, the most in the country, leaving 11 people either dead or injured. California and North Carolina trailed behind with two each. Texas is a key driver of that spike, with a staggering 22 incidents recorded over five years, second only to California's 25. In total, 369 people have been killed and 701 injured in U.S. active shooter attacks since 2020. The FBI's definition of 'active shooter' is specific: it refers to someone trying to kill in a populated area, typically with a gun — even if there's just one victim. It is not the same as a mass shooting, which is defined as an incident where four or more people are killed by gunfire at the same location. Texas's loose gun laws may also factor into the state's high numbers. The state has some of the most permissive firearm regulations in the U.S. Residents are allowed to carry handguns in public without a license or training under the 2021 permit less carry law. There is no requirement to register firearms or report private gun sales, and background checks for such transactions are not mandatory. Texas also has a strong 'stand your ground' law and no waiting period for gun purchases. Despite Texas's lead in raw numbers, the most deadly single shooting of 2024 took place in Arkansas, where a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in June, killing four and injuring 10. Her son was critically injured in the exchange, along with a 57-year-old man. Authorities later revealed the weapon had been purchased legally in 2016 and had a 'Palestine' sticker on it. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. 'Civilians should understand the risks… and utilize available resources to prepare for, prevent, and survive such incidents,' the FBI warned in the report.
