Five fiery moments of Pakistan-India cricket rivalry

Express Tribune21-02-2025

As Pakistan and India gear up for a highly anticipated clash in the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday in Dubai, AFP Sport recalls five controversial moments from their fierce rivalry in one-day cricket.
Miandad's Kangaroo Jump (1992 World Cup)
Javed Miandad's antics were legendary, often leaving opponents rattled. During Pakistan's chase against India in the 1992 World Cup, the Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More's constant appeals seemed to get under Miandad's skin.
After a cheeky run, Miandad mocked More's persistent shouting with a playful kangaroo jump, imitating the keeper's movements.
While fans found it amusing, Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin was less than pleased, visibly angry at Miandad's behavior.
Prasad's Revenge (1996 World Cup Quarter-Final)
During the 1996 World Cup quarter-final, Pakistan opener Aamer Sohail was in the middle of a blistering knock when he taunted Indian medium-pacer Venkatesh Prasad after hitting him for a boundary.
The next ball, however, Prasad had the last laugh, dismissing Sohail and sending him off with a fiery gesture. The crowd erupted in celebration, and Prasad's revenge rattled Pakistan's chase.
Inzamam's Stand-Off with Fan (1997)
Inzamam-ul-Haq, known for his calm demeanor, shocked fans during a 1997 match in Toronto when he confronted an India fan who mocked his weight with chants of "Aloo" (Potato).
The heckling became too much, and Inzamam, furious, stormed into the stands with a bat in hand. The incident remained a hot topic for years, with Inzamam later revealing how the chants were personal and abusive.
Gambhir and Afridi's Heated Exchange (2007)
In a heated clash between India and Pakistan in 2007, India's Gautam Gambhir and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi nearly came to blows. Gambhir struck Afridi for a boundary before engaging in a war of words.
The two cricketers had an intense confrontation, with a mid-pitch collision and expletives exchanged, forcing the umpire to step in and cool things down. Their rivalry has continued off the field, often spilling over into social media.
Akhtar vs Harbhajan (2010 Asia Cup)
In the 2010 Asia Cup final, Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar and India's Harbhajan Singh had a fiery encounter. After a dot ball from Akhtar, the two exchanged words, and in retaliation, Harbhajan hit a six to guide India to victory.
Akhtar was visibly furious, and Harbhajan celebrated in front of him, triggering more tension. The two cricketers recently re-enacted this moment on TV, reflecting on the intense rivalry.
As these fiery moments show, the Pakistan-India cricket rivalry is filled with memorable clashes both on and off the field. With Sunday's showdown at the Champions Trophy, fans can expect more drama to unfold.

Real Madrid sign Argentina teenager Mastantuono on six-year deal

Real Madrid have signed 17-year-old midfielder Franco Mastantuono from Argentine side River Plate on a six-year contract, the LaLiga club said on Friday. The Spanish outfit had agreed to sign Mastantuono for about $45 million last week and the talented teenager, who can also play on the wing, will be a Real Madrid player from August 14. Having come through River Plate's youth system, Mastantuono was part of the first team in the 2024-25 season. In February last year, he becane the youngest scorer in River's history. He also became the youngest at 17 to play an official match for Argentina when he featured in their World Cup qualifier against Chile last week. Mastantuono had been linked to top European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April put him on the map. Mastantuono is Real's third close-season recruit after they signed Premier League defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar to host fourth round of Asia's World Cup qualifiers

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been awarded the hosting rights for the fourth round of Asia's 2026 World Cup preliminaries in October, the Asian Football Confederation said on Friday. The pair have reached the next phase of the continent's qualifiers and will be joined by Iraq, Oman, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates in the draw, which takes place on July 17. The decision to award the rights to Saudi Arabia and Qatar comes after Iraq confirmed earlier this week that they had bid to host one of the groups. Teams will be divided into two groups of three nations and the winners of each will join Japan, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Jordan in qualifying for the newly-expanded 48-nation finals from the continental preliminaries. Games will be played across three match days from Oct. 8 to 14. The runners-up in each group will advance to a playoff in November, with the winners of that clash featuring in an intercontinental playoff tournament in March to determine the two remaining World Cup spots. The six competing nations qualified for the fourth phase by finishing either third or fourth in their respective groups in the third round of qualifying, which was completed on Tuesday.

Pulisic says questions about his commitment to national team ‘way out of line'

United States winger Christian Pulisic has defended his decision to skip the CONCACAF Gold Cup and said those questioning his commitment to the national team were 'way out of line'. Pulisic, who played 50 games for AC Milan in the recently-concluded season, said taking time to rest and recover was the right call for him and the team with the World Cup coming to the U.S., Mexico and Canada next year. Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson are also skipping the June 14 to July 6 Gold Cup despite not being injured, according to USA Today. Former U.S. stalwarts Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas were among those criticising players who decided to skip the tournament and their comments did not sit well with Pulisic. 'When it comes to those guys, it is tough because I looked up to those guys growing up, some of these guys were my idols, and I respect them so much as players,' the 26-year-old told CBS Sports podcast on Thursday. 'It's tough especially when some of them privately, the way they talk to me and clearly want to show support and be a friend and then they say something different publicly. Boca Juniors defender Costa denied US visa, misses Club World Cup 'Of all things, you can talk about my performances, but to question my commitment to the national team, in my opinion that's way out of line.' The U.S. suffered a fourth straight defeat on Tuesday when they lost 4-0 at home against Switzerland in a friendly.
