Puppet Master pulls enough strings to shade stablemate Stay True
It continued Aidan O'Brien's domination of the trials in recent days, with the Ballydoyle handler also winning the Chester Vase and the Dee Stakes with Lambourn and Mount Kilimanjaro respectively, as well as the Cheshire Oaks and Lingfield Oaks Trial with Minnie Hauk and Giselle.
Ryan Moore pulled a mild surprise at declarations when his name appeared against Puppet Master rather than Stay True, as the latter had won his only start, while Puppet Master had only won one of four races.
O'Brien stated it was down to the experience factor and that ultimately proved crucial as the two began to pull clear.
Stay True did not look thoroughly straightforward on the way round but in the closing stages it was Puppet Master (4-5 favourite) who veered of a straight line.
Briefly, Stay True looked like he might get on top but Moore's mount was in fact always doing enough and got the verdict by a short head.
Puppet Master was cut to 25-1 from 50s for the Derby by Betfair and Paddy Power, while Coral went 25-1 from 66s.
Moore said: 'We fancied him in the Royal Lodge last year but he didn't quite run his race that day.
'He had a nice run at Leopardstown and that experience and that run stood him in good stead for today, they are two good horses. It was only the experience that made me ride him, they are two nice ones.
'We've still got trials in Leopardstown and York and there's France too, so we'll see where they all stand.'
Coolmore's Paul Smith said: 'It's been a great week and these are two lovely horses who hit the line hard.
'Ryan said Puppet Master relaxed well and is quite an uncomplicated horse. I think the deciding factor of Ryan riding him was that he had the greater experience.
'Richard (Kingscote) was very encouraged by Stay True. He said he's still a bit of a baby on just a second run and will get the trip nicely.
'It was interesting that the further they went, the further they went clear of the third horse.
'We will see what happens, as we have runners in France and at York and there's always the Irish Derby and Ascot as well as Epsom.
'The Delacroix form looks strong and we like him and the two that finished behind him. The Lion In Winter did a piece of work the other day and heads to the Dante.'

The filly quickly boosted her reputation when comfortably opening her account at the Curragh. She ended 2024 with a staying-on third behind Whirl in a one-mile Group 3 contest back there. Despite that form, the imposing bay looked likely to really excel over middle distances this year. She confirmed that impression with a blistering defeat of Harpsichord in the Lingfield Oaks Trial. The three-year-old looks destined for the very top so she can follow-up in the big race itself. O'Brien can enjoy yet more Group 1 glory with Jan Brueghel (2:40) in the Coronation Cup. The four-year-old absolutely bolted-up from Ozark Daze on his belated debut at the Curragh. He continued to make up for lost time by chinning Trustyourinstinct in a Group 3 back there. The colt showed his St Leger credentials by edging Bellum Justum in the Gordon at Goodwood. He showed class and guts once again to outbattle Illinois in the Last Classic itself at Doncaster. Given time to recover, he returned with a cracking second to Galen over 1m 2f at the Curragh. The star will be primed so he can land add this historic prize to his CV over a more suitable trip. Diego Ventura (1:30) holds all the aces for Hamad Al Jehani in the competitive Surrey Stakes. The colt oozed class when hacking-up from Majestic Wave for Gavin Cromwell on debut at Naas. Bought by Team Wathan, he edged-out Spirit Of Farhh on debut for his new connections at Ascot. The bay continued to justify his price tag when second to The Waco Kid in a Newmarket Group 3. He ran another stormer when filling the same spot behind La Bellota dropped in trip at York. The son of Mehmas was an eye-catching third to Cosmic Year in the Charles II returned to HQ. He put that run to good use with a convincing defeat of Epson Blue Cen in a Longchamp Group 3. There is plenty more to come from this pacey type who can get the better of some exciting rivals. Havana Hurricane (2:05) can blow his rivals away in the British EBF Woodcote Stakes. Eve Johnson Houghton's colt was a well-fancied 11-2 chance before his debut at Goodwood. He handled the undulating track extremely well when hosing-up from the exciting Logi Bear. The two-year-old surged clear that day so he can stay unbeaten up in trip at this similar track. Defiance (3:15) won't back down for Roger Varian in the tricky Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap. The four-year-old looked promising when outbattling Caviar Heights on debut at Sandown. He then didn't run too badly when sixth to Ghostwriter in the Royal Lodge at Newmarket. The bay handled this track well when edged-out by Bellum Justum in the Blue Riband Trial. He couldn't cope with the step-up in trip and class when unplaced in the Lingfield version. The four-year-old had his limitations exposed again when flopping in the Edward VII at Ascot. The son of Camelot retains plenty of ability so he can bounce back in these calmer waters. Two Tempting (4:35) can get the job done once again in the TrustATrader Handicap. Jonathan Portman's horse recorded a career best when just denying Beshtani last year. He was almost as good when fending-off Classic in another red-hot contest at Sandown. However, the five-year-old then struggled off inflated marks on his next couple of starts. He took advantage of some mercy from the assessor when edging Divine Libra at Chester. The gelding quickly lost his way again after a lacklustre effort behind Volterra at Ascot. He bounced back when cosily dismissing Partisan Hero returned to the Roodee last time. This big prize has been the aim ever since so he can strike again for his shrewd handler. Miss Information (5:10) looks reliable for Andrew Balding in the Debenhams Handicap. The filly returned to her useful juvenile form when routing Phoenix Of Dreams at Chester. She then showed a real liking for this track when hammering Guiteau in decent company. The four-year-old then held her form reasonably well for the rest of the campaign. She needed the run when a fine fifth behind Ten Pounds on her comeback at Newmarket. The bay looked much fitter when outbattling Physique in a similar contest returned to HQ. The daughter of Blue Point remains fairly-treated so she can follow-up under Oisin Murphy. Buick backing Desert Flower to bloom in quest for Oaks glory
It has been a sublime start to the summer for the Moulton Paddocks handler and his number one rider, and after picking up both Classics at Newmarket last month the pair now head to the Surrey Downs with an exceptional chance to continue their hot streak in racing's crown jewel events. But I do think she's very versatile – each time I've ridden her she has adapted to the race scenario. 'We could have kept her at a mile, it was put across the table as a plan, but we all felt she would get further. Whether that is a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half, we will see on Friday.' Saeed Bin Suroor's Elwateen was fourth to Desert Flower on just her second start in the 1000 Guineas and the Newmarket handler could celebrate the 30th anniversary of Lammtarra's Derby success in style, as like her Rowley Mile conqueror she puts her stamina to the test. Bin Suroor said: 'She ran a really good race in the Guineas and she came out of that well. To finish fourth in the Guineas on just her second run after winning her maiden was very good. 'This is her first run over a mile and half, but she should stay because she is nice and relaxed. 'I think Epsom will suit her, she's a nice size and if she settles in the first half of the race I think she'll stay. The further she goes the better I think. She's a very nice filly and I think she'll run well.' Aidan O'Brien has won the showpiece event 10 times and saddles a host of trial winners in search of number 11. Ryan Moore has plumped for Cheshire Oaks scorer Minnie Hauk from the Ballydoyle trio, as she bids to become the first filly since Enable to follow up success on the Roodee at Epsom. We knew it wouldn't be too demanding on her and she would have learned plenty. 'She's a lovely filly with a good nature, a good traveller and has a good stride to her. She shows plenty of pace in her work in her half-speeds.' The master of Ballydoyle will also be represented by Giselle and Whirl, who tuned up for duty with wins at Lingfield and in York's Musidora Stakes respectively. O'Brien continued: 'Giselle got very keen through the winter and spring and wanted to do too much so we didn't get to do an awful lot with her – it was all about relaxing her. 'If we were going to the Oaks she had to run and Lingfield was about the only place she could. She was probably very underdone fitness-wise in Lingfield, we were just hoping to get her started and go from there, so we were delighted with the way she won and she's come forward a lot since then we think. 'Whirl is a very straightforward filly and Ryan was very happy to make the running on her in York. A filly came up either side of her, but that was no problem to her, she's got a lovely mind and she got the mile and a quarter very well and looked like a filly that could get further.' Ralph Beckett has fond memories of the Oaks and having linked up with owner-breeder Julian Richmond-Watson when opening his Classic account with Look Here in 2008, the pair join forces again with Nottingham winner Revoir, who will attempt to reverse recent Newbury form with Ed Walker's Qilin Queen. The Lion In Winter drawn widest of all at Epsom
Aidan O'Brien's colt – who will be ridden by Colin Keane – lost his unbeaten record in the Dante and as well as aiming to emulate Workforce in overcoming defeat at York to prevail in the blue riband, he now has the widest draw of all to overcome. Stablemate and current market leader Delacroix fared only marginally better in stall 14, while O'Brien's third representative, Lambourn, the Chester Vase winner, is in stall 10 under Wayne Lordan. Charlie Appleby's 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court drew stall seven, as the Godolphin runner attempts to keep his Triple Crown dreams alive. For the first time ever, the race was subject to 72-hour declarations, with Epsom hoping the change helps to build anticipation ahead of the premier Classic. There will be a second runner in the Godolphin blue as Saeed bin Suroor's Tornado Alert (11), fourth in the Guineas, also runs for Sheikh Mohammed's operation. Ralph Beckett's Pride Of Arras arrives unbeaten and a smooth winner of the Dante, which is traditionally one of the strongest trials, but he is posted wide in 16, with stablemate Stanhope Gardens on the inside in two. John and Thady Gosden also have multiple chances with Damysus (15) and Nightwalker (five), who were second and fifth in the Dante. There are two runners from France in Francis-Henri Graffard's Midak (four) and Henri-Francois Devin's New Ground (17), with the pair both supplemented for the race on Monday. Charlie Johnston has declared both Lazy Griff (three), second to Lambourn at Chester, and Green Storm (eight), the mount of Billy Loughnane. Al Wasl Storm (13), Nightime Dancer (nine), Rogue Impact (one), Sea Scout (18), Tennessee Stud (12) and Tuscan Hills (six) complete the list. Epsom's clerk of the course Andrew Cooper expects the ground to ride on the easy side of good at the weekend. He told Racing TV: 'It's been a difficult spring, it's been so dry, this is my 30th Derby and I've never known such a prolonged dry period. 'It's been challenging, it hasn't been great for grass, it's been constant irrigation just to get where we want to be. 'Here and now I would call it good, that follows 3.5 millimetres of rain yesterday afternoon which was forecast but very localised. 'It looks like another spell of rain is coming tomorrow and Saturday, with the potential to have some heavy showers. It's unsettled for sure. On a raceday it doesn't take a lot to start shifting descriptions. 'I can't see a scenario with ground any quicker than good on Saturday and there's every indication we'll be on the slower side through the two days.'
