Fans say the same thing as James Tedesco lands telling new blow on Dylan Edwards

Yahoo02-05-2025

James Tedesco has sent NSW coach Laurie Daley an emphatic statement that he wants his Blues jersey back off Dylan Edwards after his latest sensational display for the Roosters in Friday night's 36-26 win over the Dolphins. The second match of Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium turned into the Tedesco show as the former Blues skipper put on another masterclass to stamp his claims for a State of Origin recall.
The Roosters skipper won the Artie Legacy Medal as man of the match in the 10-point victory after a vintage display that included two try assists, 10 tackle busts, two line breaks, four offloads and a game-high 212 run metres. Tedesco was in just about everything for Trent Robinson's side and it was only a late fade from his Roosters side and a flurry of points from the Dolphins towards the end that made the scoreline more respectable.
Tedesco was dropped for Edwards before last year's Origin series despite playing Game 1 when the Panthers fullback was injured. But Edwards returned to help the Blues win the final two games to claim the Origin series, before going on to win his fourth premiership in a row with Penrith in 2024.
However, the Panthers No.1 has endured an injury-hit season this year and has been in patchy form since returning from a groin complaint - mirroring that of his last-placed Penrith side. On the other hand, Tedesco has been arguably the form fullback in the competition in 2025 and it's led to calls for Daley to drop Edwards and bring the former Blues skipper back into the fold.
Tedesco gave a classy interview after his man of the match display on Friday night after insisting the Blues No.1 jersey belongs to Edwards. And the Roosters skipper said being free of the pressure that comes with being the incumbent Blues fullback has helped him focus on his game at the Roosters, where he has been in irresistible form.
"I am very clear on how I play footy and prepare. Everyone is expecting me to not be as good but I am sticking to my routine weekly - mentally freshening up for each game and physically getting my body right and then playing," Tedesco said after the game. "It's not my decision (who plays fullback for NSW). It is what the coach wants and how he wants to play.
"I have been on the other side of it over the years where I am the (NSW) fullback and everyone is talking about form. It does put pressure on you. I haven't felt any of that pressure. That has freed me up to play some of my best footy. My focus is leading this team, playing my game and leading from the front... Everyone plays the game to play for their state or Australia. That is always a huge honour. That feeling has never changed for me."

Daley appeared to back the Origin claims from the likes of Edwards and champion halfback Nathan Cleary after insisting Penrith's poor form did not necessarily mean those individuals were playing badly. "I don't think I would have to worry about the guys who have won four competitions in a row and have performed at the highest level," Daley told Channel Nine. I think you look at form and you look at what people have done in the past at that level and then weigh it all up."
But there is little doubt that Tedesco has been in much better form than Edwards this season and his latest display will only ramp up pressure on the Penrith No.1 ahead of Sunday's Magic Round clash with Brisbane. Roosters coach Trent Robinson admitted Daley had a tough choice to make about his NSW fullback after admitting both players had put forward compelling cases.
"It is just who the coach wants to choose," Robinson said of Tedesco's Origin hopes. "You can't go wrong obviously with Ted and everything that he has done, and you can't go wrong with Dylan. He is an amazing player. It is just the choice of a coach. There is no right or wrong decision.
"It is whatever the coach feels like is his team. There are other positions you can debate. I don't think fullback is one of them." Despite Robinson's comments and the admission from Tedesco that the Blues' No.1 jersey belonged to Edwards, many fans were convinced after Friday night that the Roosters skipper had done more than enough to demand an Origin recall.

Blues hold off Bombers fightback for crucial win

Carlton have beaten arch-rivals Essendon by eight points in a pulsating duel, finally holding on when threatened in the second half. The Blues' handling of a high hit to Adam Cerra will be a major talking point after the 11.12 (78) to 11.4 (70) win on Sunday night at the MCG. After a hot start that proved decisive, Carlton were in all sorts of trouble in the second half before steadying, partly thanks to an effusive three-quarter-time spray from coach Michael Voss. Blake Acres kicked a booming goal from an acute angle at the start of the last term to fortify Carlton, before Zac Williams added another that gave them crucial breathing space. Just like last week against Brisbane, the Bombers paid dearly for a woeful first term. Blues defender Jack Silvagni was outstanding, keeping Essendon young gun Nate Caddy goal-less, while midfielder Darcy Parish had 10 clearances in his return from injury. The Blues were missing key forward Harry McKay with a knee ailment, but his replacement Hudson O'Keeffe made an excellent AFL debut. Carlton looked like enjoying a night out when they kicked the first four goals in 14 minutes. Bombers debutant Luamon Lual briefly stemmed the onslaught when he joined the "first kick, first goal" club. But the Blues kicked another two goals to close out the first term and broke out to a 38-point lead 10 minutes after the first break. As soon as De Koning laid the tackle, Williams was GONE 💨#AFLBluesDons — AFL (@AFL) June 8, 2025 Two minutes into the second term, Sam Durham collected Cerra with a high bump that looks certain to earn the Essendon on-baller a suspension. Cerra was left with a black eye and was assessed on the ground, but surprisingly did not come off for a HIA. Carlton medical staff reviewed the incident on boundary-line video and finally, after 14 minutes, Cerra was taken off the ground for the HIA, which he passed. It is unclear whether there was any AFL intervention before the Blues decided to take Cerra to the rooms. Meanwhile, the Bombers rallied from their dismal first term and steadily worked into the game. They reduced the margin to 28 points at the main break and went on the attack in the third, kicking four goals to one. Remarkably, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps went stat-less in the third as Essendon surged. The Bombers could have closed to within a goal late in the third, but a desperate tackle from Adam Saad stopped Xavier Duursma from having a shot. Sam Walsh was instrumental again for Carlton, with an equal game-high 32 disposals.

Two former Wisconsin Badgers land on PFF's list of the NFL's top guards for 2025

Two former Wisconsin Badgers land on PFF's list of the NFL's top guards for 2025 A pair of former Wisconsin Badgers appeared on ProFootballFocus' recent list of the NFL's top 32 guards entering the 2025 season. Detroit Lions right guard Kevin Zeitler, a three-year Badger from 2009-11, and Buffalo Bills left guard David Edwards, who represented the Badgers from 2015-18, earned designations on the outlet's 32-man hierarchy. Zeitler, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, landed at No. 9 on the list between Los Angeles Rams guard Kevin Dotson (No. 8) and San Francisco 49ers run-blocker Dominick Puni. The former Badger signed with the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2024 slate following his 2023 Pro Bowl campaign with the Baltimore Ravens. He's now entering his 14th professional campaign. In offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's scheme, Zeitler helped the Lions rush 534 times for 2,488 yards and 29 scores with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs starring in the backfield. Zeitler started at right guard in all 16 of his appearances. Despite being one of the older players at his position, Zeitler is about as effective as anyone not named Joe Thuney, Chris Lindstrom, or Quenton Nelson. Here's PFF's analysis: "Although Zeitler enters 2025 at age 35, he continues to prove he isn't slowing down. In his lone season in Detroit, Zeitler earned his highest PFF overall grade (86.5) in a decade, finishing as the NFL's third-highest-graded guard. While his pass protection dipped a bit in 2024, his 87.2 PFF run-blocking grade stands as the best of his career." Meanwhile, PFF ranked Edwards down at No. 29. The 2019 First-team All-Big Ten team member has played six professional seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills. Shortly after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021, the lineman joined the Bills in 2023 as a backup before starting all 16 games during the 2024 campaign. With reigning MVP Josh Allen and dynamic rusher James Cook as primary ball-carriers, the Bills rushed for 2,230 yards and a league-best 32 touchdowns a season ago. Here's what PFF said about Edwards ahead of his third season in Buffalo: "2024 marked Edwards' first season in a starting role since 2021. He earned solid PFF overall grades, but really stood out as a zone blocker, recording a 78.1 PFF run-blocking grade on zone concepts — good for the 93rd percentile and the fifth-highest mark among qualifying guards." Zeitler's Lions will square off against the Packers on Sept. 7 to begin the season, while Edwards' Bills will play the Ravens the same day, beginning their quest for a second straight AFC Championship game appearance.
