Pahang's absence, a big loss, says former football great Zainal
KUALA LUMPUR: Pahang's decision to skip the 2025-2026 Malaysia League (M-League) season is a big loss to Malaysian football, said former Pahang coach Datuk Zainal Abidin Hassan.
Zainal, who was also a legend of the Elephants squad, admitted to being affected by the development, as the team not only have a long history in Malaysian football - including winning the Super League, Malaysia Cup and FA Cup - but have also produced many national players.
"This is a sad decision ... however, we must respect it (the decision not to compete). But it's a great loss.
"A huge loss for the country's football, the league and Pahang. I hope the situation will recover and Pahang will return," he said after attending the WRA Academy Football Clinic at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council Stadium on Saturday (June 21)
However, the Football Association of Malaysia executive committee member believes that talent development in Pahang will not be affected by this.
"In my view, what's missing is the senior team, but the youth teams are still active. That's a positive move.
"I hope these young players won't give up and will work hard to restore Pahang's image until the team returns to the top league,' said Zainal, who won the Malaysia Cup with Pahang in 1983 and 1992 as a player.
On Friday, the Malaysian Football League announced in a statement that Pahang, despite having obtained the 2025-2026 National Licence, had submitted a confirmation letter dated June 16, 2025, stating their decision to withdraw from the M-League.
Pahang finished eighth in last season's Super League with 29 points. The last title won by them was the 2018 FA Cup. - Bernama

Nafuzi declined to name names, but several players from the recent senior national camp, all eligible for the Under-23 level, are under serious consideration. Among them are Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili and Haqimi Azim Rosli (both 22), who were retained until the second phase of training for Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam earlier this month. Also in the frame are Arif Aiman Hanapi, Nooa Laine, Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar, and Gabriel Palmero (all 23), who featured in the final 23-man squad for the Vietnam match. "For players like Ubaidullah and Haqimi, we spoke with (Harimau Malaya coach) Peter Cklamovski to give them senior exposure. The Elite Games will help us evaluate them and offer a platform to prove themselves before final selection on July 1." He admitted that the league off-season poses challenges, particularly with match fitness, but said plans are in place for at least three friendly matches against Super League clubs to fine-tune the squad. He has also reached out to club coaches to ensure smooth player release, with most responding positively. "Some players haven't played for two or three months. That's why we're organising friendlies to test team chemistry, build rhythm and assess their readiness," he said. Malaysia are in Group A alongside hosts Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei. Nafuzi sees the opening clash against the Philippines as crucial to setting the tone. "It's a tough group. Facing Indonesia on their turf won't be easy. We must be physically and mentally ready — confidence will be key." This will be Nafuzi's first tournament in charge, offering him a real glimpse of the next generation. "I'm still getting to know many of these players. But our structure is aligned with the senior team. We've worked closely with Cklamovski to pick those ready now and those with future potential." Thai midfielder Picha seeks new challenge with Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR: Thai international Picha Autra has become Selangor's latest foreign signing for the 2025-2026 M-League season. The 29-year-old midfielder is expected to play a key role for the Red Giants not just domestically, but also in their continental campaigns in the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) and the Asean Club Championship. Picha, who made his professional debut at 18 with Nakhon Nayok, has built a reputation as one of Thailand's most dependable midfielders. 'For me, it was a good start when we played against Cape Verde. I was there at the stadium and I saw a high-quality level of football and this had some impact when we played against Vietnam,' he said. Although Harimau Malaya lost the second match against Cape Verde behind closed doors, Zainal believes the lessons learned were crucial, as evidenced by their dominant win against Vietnam in the World Cup Qualifier at Bukit Jalil just days later. 'So with more matches like these, because I have lived through those eras where I played against the best teams. Even though we lost three or four times, that is where we learned and improved,' he said. Zainal also encouraged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to plan more friendlies against top-tier teams to give Harimau Malaya high-quality exposure. 'With the national team now at a certain level that we can be proud of, I think we need to look forward to playing against teams like Korea, Japan or teams from the Middle East. 'That is where we will push forward to reach the level we aspire to. The journey is still long, so this is the beginning and we must keep moving forward," he added.
