Is road transport fast losing share to railways in transportation of newly manufactured cars? The answer is, yes. In the past 11 years, railways have registered an 18-fold increase in transportation of cars - from barely 1.5 per cent of cars manufactured in 2013-14 to over 24 per cent in 2024-25.In the last financial year, railway officials said, around 12.5 lakh out of the country's total production of 50.6 lakh cars were transported by trains. "Just in the last four years, the share of cars transported by trains has gone up from 14.7 per cent to nearly 24.5 per cent. We are hopeful of the trend continuing as automobile manufacturers find rail a more convenient, cost-effective and greener mode," said a senior railway official.Industry sources said the number of cars transported by truck trailers beyond a distance of 600 km has reduced by almost half because of railways' drive to grab more share of this freight. "This has hit the road transportation industry, which creates more employment, badly. Railways are increasing the availability of rakes and are also offering incentives to attract more business," said a senior executive of a logistics firm which is into vehicle transportation.Going by absolute numbers for transportation of cars by trains globally, India is a distant second after the United States, where around 75 lakh cars are moved by railways. Germany transports around 6 lakh cars, ranking third.Sources in the railway ministry said the spike in car transportation by trains has been possible due to sustained efforts. While the number of rakes available for the segment was only 10 in 2013-14, it was increased to 29 by 2021 and is now at 170. In 2024-25, a total of 7,578 trips were made for transporting cars, they said. Two years back, railways redesigned wagons to allow transporting SUVs on both decks as opposed to only one deck. So, while one rake with 27 wagons could accommodate only 135 SUVs earlier, the capacity has now doubled to 270 SUVs.

'Life is a gift': Sight of a fallen tree makes Rs 50,000 crore man remind followers to be more thankful

— svembu (@svembu) Billionaire Sridhar Vembu recently reflected on the inherent fragility of life . On Monday, the Zoho founder shared a picture of a fallen palm tree on X and observed how a palm tree, which was resilient enough to withstand powerful cyclones, succumbed to monsoon further explained that palm trees are so robust that they are traditionally used as structural beams in rural architecture. Their capacity to resist cyclones made their sudden fall in relatively milder weather conditions all the more symbolic. Upon inspecting the fallen tree, it appeared that the foundation had been compromised—a reminder that often, what seems strong externally may be deteriorating from sight of the now vanquished, once majestic tree, lying helplessly on the ground made the business tycoon feel contemplative on the transience of to X, he wrote, 'Today the monsoon winds are so strong in our village, a palm tree fell. These are very strong trees, so strong they are used in traditional homes as crossbeams. They even withstand cyclones. This one appears to have a weakened base when we examined it…'He ended his post with a solemn reminder to followers to count their blessings and practice gratitude. 'All life is a gift. Good day to be thankful.'Many users on X resonated deeply with Vembu's message. One commenter expressed shock and relief that no one had been harmed and emphasized how such incidents offer powerful reminders of life's fleeting nature. Others reflected on the sheer force of nature and how it humbles even the mightiest among us. Some drew parallels with past global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which similarly forced people worldwide to confront life's unpredictability and reinforced the importance of Vembu, the mind behind Zoho Corporation , is widely recognized as one of India's most respected and forward-thinking technology leaders. Hailing from the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, he was born in 1968 and showed early promise in academics. He pursued engineering at the prestigious IIT Madras, laying the foundation for a remarkable journey. After his graduation, he moved to the United States to gain further education and professional experience in the technology Vembu eventually returned to India with a transformative vision—to develop high-quality, globally competitive software from rural parts of the country. This bold ambition was not just a statement of intent but a revolutionary move that defied the conventional norms of the tech industry, which typically clusters around urban hubs. He chose to build and expand Zoho from a quiet village in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, demonstrating his firm belief that groundbreaking innovation can emerge even from the most modest his guidance, Zoho evolved into a major international software company, offering a wide range of products used by millions of customers across the globe. Remarkably, Vembu achieved this without seeking external funding—Zoho has remained a fully bootstrapped venture, a rarity in the startup ecosystem. This independence allowed the company to grow organically, stay profitable, and maintain its unique culture and extraordinary accomplishments earned him national recognition. In 2021, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian honour, in acknowledgment of his contributions to technology and entrepreneurship. Beyond his success in business, Vembu is often praised for his unconventional methods and deep-rooted principles. Instead of aligning with typical Silicon Valley models, he emphasized self-reliance, local empowerment, and of 2024, Forbes listed Sridhar Vembu as the 39th wealthiest individual in India, estimating his net worth at around ₹50,000 crore. Yet, despite this staggering success, he remains grounded in simplicity and continues to advocate for rural development and education. He actively promotes the idea that world-class talent can be nurtured outside major cities if given the right tools and opportunities.

Long wait for DLL continues to bug applicants in Hyd'bad

Hyderabad: Motorists are facing inconvenience as the Road Transport Authorities are delaying the application process for the (DLL) drivers' learning licence. For applying learners' licences, the applicants are forced to wait between 15-20 days. According to the transport unions, earlier, for applying for the learners' licence, the slot was booked in a day to two, but now the applicants who were applying the LR were forced to wait more than two weeks to get their slot bookings. However, the transport department cited staff crunch as the reason for the delay. K Akhil, an applicant at Moosarambagh RTO said, 'I applied for a learner's licence online, but my slot is very late. Earlier, it was just a process of days to get LL, but now I received a slot after 23 days.' He said that he had applied on June 4, and received the slot for June 24. The general secretary of the Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union, M Dayanand, raised concerns about the transport department's failure in delays in process and issuing LL. 'The delay of the process has irked the applicants, especially the college going students who have turned 18. The process which takes a day or two is now taking 15–20 days just to issue a slot for the applicants, which is considerably lengthening the process of acquiring the driving licence.' Dayanand expressed concern over the shortage of staff, particularly transport inspectors, across all RTAs in Greater Hyderabad. He questioned why the applicant should have to suffer the consequences of this staffing issue regarding transport matters. He said, 'The government has to fill the posts in the transport department to streamline the process in the RTA.' According to sources, daily over 300 such transactions were done in RTA offices in Greater Hyderabad. Though the application process for driving license is online, the applicants hesitate to use the facility, for the delay in slot booking and are taking help of agents and brokers. 'Most people seek the help of agents and brokers to get it done at the earliest, however, it was delayed and they are forced to pay a hefty amount,' said Dayanand.
