Britain's MI6 spy agency gets its first female chief

Britain's real-life spies have finally caught up with James Bond. MI6 has appointed its first female chief. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Sunday (June 15, 2025) that Blaise Metreweli will be the next head of the U.K.'s foreign intelligence agency, and the first woman to hold the post since its founding in 1909. She is currently the MI6 director of technology and innovation — the real-world equivalent of Bond gadget-master Q. A career intelligence officer, Ms. Metreweli, 47, steps from the shadows into the light as the only MI6 employee whose name is made public. She said "I am proud and honored to be asked to lead my Service." Mr. Starmer said the 'historic appointment' comes at a time 'when the work of our intelligence services has never been more vital. 'The United Kingdom is facing threats on an unprecedented scale – be it aggressors who send their spy ships to our waters or hackers whose sophisticated cyber plots seek to disrupt our public services,' he said. Mr. Starmer made the announcement as he arrived in the Canadian province of Alberta for a Group of Seven leaders' summit. Ms. Metreweli takes over at MI6 as the agency faces growing challenges from states including China and Russia, whose use of cyber tools, espionage, and influence operations threatens global stability and British interests, even as it remains on alert against terrorist threats. Ms. Metreweli is the first woman to get the top job, known as C – rather than M, the fictional MI6 chief of the 007 thrillers. M was played onscreen by Judi Dench in seven Bond movies starting in the 1990s. She will take up her post in the fall, replacing Richard Moore, who has held the job for five years. Britain's two other main intelligence agencies have already shattered the spy world's glass ceiling. MI5, the domestic security service, was led by Stella Rimington from 1992 to 1996 and Eliza Manningham-Buller between 2002 and 2007. Anne Keast-Butler became head of electronic and cyber-intelligence agency GCHQ in 2023. Mr. Moore, an Oxford-educated former diplomat, fit the 007 mold like a Savile Row suit. But in recent years MI6 has worked to increase diversity, broadening its recruitment process from the traditional 'tap on the shoulder' at an elite university. The agency's website stresses its family-friendly flexible working policy and goal of recruiting 'talented people from all backgrounds.' Mr. Moore suggested he would like his successor to be a woman. He wrote on X in 2023 that he would 'help forge women's equality by working to ensure I'm the last C selected from an all-male shortlist.' Like many things about MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service, the process of choosing a new chief took place out of public view. It began with the country's top civil servant writing to government departments in March asking them to put forward candidates. The job was open to applicants from other intelligence agencies, the civil service, the diplomatic service, the armed forces or the police. In the end, MI6 opted for an internal candidate with a 25-year career in espionage, a degree in anthropology from Cambridge University — where she was on the women's rowing team — and expertise in cutting-edge technology. 'At a time of global instability and emerging security threats, where technology is power and our adversaries are working ever closer together, Blaise will ensure the U.K. can tackle these challenges head on to keep Britain safe and secure at home and abroad,' said Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who oversees MI6.

Air India Plane Crash: High-level panel to investigate Ahmedabad tragedy meets today

The high-level committee to investigate last week's Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad is likely to hold its first meeting today, June 16. The panel, headed by the Union home secretary, is expected to submit within three months its report detailing the causes of the accident that killed 270 people, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu said during a press briefing on Saturday. The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Friday night. All passengers – except one – on board the Air India flight bound for London Gatwick Airport that crashed shortly after take-off from Gujarat's Ahmedabad airport on 12 June afternoon died. There were 242 passengers and crew on board the plane, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. One passenger, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, miraculously survived the crash. The Committee will not be a substitute for other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations, but will focus on formulating SOPs for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future. 'The committee will have access to all records, including, among others, flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance records, ATC Log and witness testimonies,' the Ministry said in the order. The panel consist of Home Secretary and secretary or joint secretary of the home affairs ministry, secretary of Civil aviation, representative from the Gujarat home department, representative from the state disaster response authority, police commissioner of Ahmedabad, the Director General (DG), Inspection and Safety of the Indian Air Force, DG of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, DG of the aviation regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, special director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Director of Directorate of Forensic Science Services. Meanwhile, Dr PK Mishra, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, reviewed the emergency response following the crash of Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad during a meeting with senior Gujarat government officials on Sunday. Mishra said the authorities have recovered the second black box of the plane from the crash site. The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has been recovered from the site, which will help in the investigation. Mishra discussed the crisis with Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik, and other senior officials. He commended the swift and coordinated efforts of both state and central agencies in managing it. "The state agencies, the Government of India agencies and others have responded very timely and effectively. I met some of the relatives of those who, unfortunately, died and were injured. So they are all satisfied with the work done by the state government and other public agencies, the Government of India," Mishra told news agency ANI. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed into the hostel complex shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 241 passengers and crew, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Others who died in the accident were on ground. Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad has made significant progress in identifying victims of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash. Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Rajnish Patel confirmed that 47 DNA samples have been matched, with 44 families contacted and 24 bodies handed over to relatives. The committee will have access to all records, including, among others, flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance records, ATC Log and witness testimonies. "47 DNA have matched so far. Out of those 47, families of 44 have been contacted. So far, mortal remains of 24 deceased have been handed over to their families..." The hospital's streamlined process, involving DNA verification at Kaushoti Bhavan in D Block, postmortem procedures, and family support, has ensured accuracy and dignity in handling the crisis," Dr Patel told news agency ANI.

New headache for sleuths tracking gangsters: Lawrence Bishnoi & Goldy Brar part ways

For Central intelligence agencies and state police sleuths tracking the syndicate of high-profile gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, who is in Sabarmati jail, and Goldy Brar, who is believed to be operating out of the US, there is a new headache. Bishnoi and Brar have split. This is what Central agencies have concluded after questioning a number of their associates, sources told The Indian Express. 'Both the gangsters have decided to stop working together. Goldy has started working with Azerbaijan-based Rohit Godara while Bishnoi is now associated with Canada-based Noni Rana. This feud and their new syndicates are now a source of increasing tension for state police forces,' an official said. According to sources, this development was discussed with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently by police officers from Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. Sources said the split happened after Bishnoi got upset with Brar and Godara over their handling of his brother Anmol's case in the US. 'Central intelligence agencies received information that Brar and Godara did not help Anmol file the required bail bond. Anmol was later released but with an ankle bracelet tracker,' sources said. Anmol (25) was arrested by US immigration authorities in November 2024 for allegedly travelling with fake documents. He was allegedly involved in Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's killing in May 2022, and was the 'mastermind' in the murder of NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique last year. According to sources, state police officers found that over the past few months, Noni Rana (Surya Pratap), the younger brother of Kala Rana (Virender Pratap), who is a known gangster from Haryana's Yamunanagar, has been making calls from the US and collecting money on behalf of Bishnoi. 'Nowadays, gangsters do not make extortion calls directly from the US but use VPN services linked to other countries,' they said. Referring to Brar and Godara, the sources said, 'Last month, they took responsibility in a social media post for the killing of Harjit Singh, a businessman operating a trucking safety and insurance consultancy, outside his office in Canada's Mississauga… they did not mention the name of Lawrence and other gang members, which they usually do in such posts.' Apart from the killings of Moosewala and Siddique, Bishnoi's name has cropped up over the past three years in connection with multiple threats issued to Salman Khan, including the firing outside the actor's house. Meanwhile, Canada has alleged that 'agents' of the Indian government were collaborating with the Bishnoi gang to spread terror on Canadian soil — a charge that India has denied. Brar (Satwinderjit Singh), the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Moosewala, was declared a designated terrorist by the Centre under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2024. During his initial days in the world of crime, Lawrence had formed a team with Brar, Kala Rana and others. 'Bishnoi later made a 'business model' involving alliances with gangsters from UP (Dhanajay Singh), Punjab (Jaggu Bhagwanpuria), Haryana (Kala Jatheri), Rajasthan (Rohit Godara) and Delhi (Rohit Moi and Hashim Baba),' sources said. 'Things were working smoothly between them, but then it all started changing. First, there were ego clashes with Bhagwanpuria, who was supplying weapons to them and asking for more money. After some time, Kala Jatheri also separated after he found that Godara and Brar were making extortion calls to several people in Haryana, his stronghold,' sources said.
