
Gloucestershire Airport site will not be 'sold for housing'
The managing director of a £25m airport which is up for sale has dispelled concerns small operators are being "pushed away" and "the site will be sold for housing".A decision on the sale of Gloucestershire Airport, which is jointly owned by Cheltenham Borough and Gloucester City Council, is due in late June.The Local Democracy Reporting Service said there had been concerns over the years the site, once sold, could be carved up for housing. It added people working at the airport had expressed their concerns over rising costs and fears there was a concerted effort to get small operators off the airfield.Jason Ivey, managing director, rejected the claims and labelled them "mischief making".
He explained that landing fees had increased because the airport was running at a loss and could not afford such cheap rates.Mr Ivey, who has also been in talks with potential buyers for the site, also said there would be strong clauses which would prevent the site from being used for anything other than aviation."The people running the airport are currently trying to get all the small operators off the airfield and run down the business most likely so they can sell off the land for housing development," an airport worker, who did not wish to be named, said.She said small flights schools had concerns and feared some of the aviation schools would no longer be able to operate there."It's killing the small businesses. It's getting to the point where it's very ridiculous."
Mr Ivey refuted those comments. "It's disappointing to see that," he said."We don't want to run the operators off. Are we making changes which are not always palatable, yes, we are, but we absolutely aren't trying to force people out."Mr Ivey said the airport is being sold as a going concern and there will be requirements in the sales particulars which will prevent or massively deter anyone from operating anything there other than an airport.He said he believed there would be a clause in the sale which would mean if the new owner tried to do anything other than keep it as an operational airport there would be financial penalties.He added the airport had financially assessed all of the would-be bidders and had streamlined it down to two preferred bidders.

McDonald's takes second bite at Dumfries planning approval
Burger giant McDonald's has submitted fresh plans for a second drive-through restaurant in Dumfries after its original application was recommended for company said it had revised its £4m proposals off the town's Annan road which were withdrawn in December last said the new application should address the concerns which had been raised by Dumfries and Galloway Council planning previously recommended refusal of the bid due to its visual impact and the failure to demonstrate that a more "appropriate site" could not be found. Andrew Crewther, senior acquisitions surveyor with McDonald's, said the revised plans directly addressed those concerns."We explored alternative sites at the Peel Centre, but one is already earmarked for Costa, and the other has permission for a much smaller unit that doesn't meet our operational needs," he said."The application also responds to feedback from council officers by repositioning the building and adding new tree planting to help soften the development's appearance and create a buffer from the A75."Alongside delivering significant inward investment and creating 120 new local jobs, the new restaurant would also support more sustainable travel by improving local access to a McDonald's restaurant."The revised planning application will be considered by the council's planning committee in due course.

Alexis Boon proposed as Hampshire and Isle of Wight chief constable
A senior Met Police officer has been named the preferred candidate for the role of Hampshire & Isle of Wight's chief constable. Alexis Boon, currently deputy assistant commissioner for the force in London, has led counter terrorism operations and run the Met's Flying Squad. The police and crime panel are set to review police and crime commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones's proposed choice at a hearing on 24 current chief constable, Scott Chilton, retired after it was confirmed he was being investigated for two alleged workplace relationships. Sam de Reya is currently acting chief. PCC Donna Jones said: "Alexis is a highly experienced senior police officer who has worked his way up the ranks – from constable to leading counter terrorism operations across the UK and running the Flying Squad."I am very much looking forward to working closely with Alexis to deliver on my Police and Crime Plan and to lead the force with strength, integrity, and commitment to providing an outstanding service to the public."Mr Boon started his career with Surrey Police in 2021 he was awarded the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service in the Queen's birthday honours. Thames Water rescue takeover collapses after private equity firm KKR drops out
Thames Water has been dealt a blow after US private equity giant KKR pulled out of plans for a rescue deal to inject much-needed cash into the troubled utility. Britain's biggest water supplier, which has 16 million customers, chose KKR at the end of March to be its preferred bidder under plans to invest around £4 billion of new equity to help keep the financially stricken company afloat. But Thames Water said KKR was now not 'in a position to proceed' and that its status as preferred bidder had lapsed. The heavily indebted utility said the decision was 'disappointing' but added it was instead taking forward talks with 'certain senior creditors' on an alternative plan to recapitalise the business. It will also hold discussions with regulator Ofwat on the senior creditors' plan. The withdrawal of KKR raises the spectre of a temporary government nationalisation of Thames Water once more, should it fail to secure a rescue deal. Environment Secretary Steve Reed said 'Thames itself remains stable', but added: 'The Government is clearly keeping a very close eye on what's going on.' Mr Reed told LBC Radio: 'We're monitoring the situation, but there's no disruption to water supply. 'Thames have got a number of options that they're exploring.' He said that 'as things stand' Thames Water is 'a stable, ongoing company' but the Government was 'ready for any eventuality'. 'If the circumstances happened with any company, any water company, where there was a breach and it would need to be put into special administration, that would happen but, as things stand, that's not applying to any company right now,' Mr Reed said. The move by KKR comes as an interim report by the Independent Water Commission on Tuesday found the water sector in England and Wales needs a 'fundamental reset' and called for a 'strengthening and rebalancing' of Ofwat's regulatory role and a more supervisory approach to its oversight. Sir Adrian Montague, chairman of Thames Water, said: 'Whilst today's news is disappointing, we continue to believe that a sustainable recapitalisation of the company is in the best interests of all stakeholders and continue to work with our creditors and stakeholders to achieve that goal. 'The company will therefore progress discussions on the senior creditors' plan with Ofwat and other stakeholders. 'The board would like to thank the senior creditors for their continuing support.' KKR declined to comment. It is understood that Thames Water is now progressing at pace on its alternative plans with senior creditors. These creditors are the bondholders who effectively own Thames Water after the High Court earlier this year approved a financial restructuring through a loan of up to £3 billion to ensure it can keep running until the summer of 2026. Thames Water is about £19 billion in debt and MPs were told last month that at one point this year it had about five weeks' worth of cash left before going bust. That was before it secured the £3 billion loan deal, which effectively stopped it from being renationalised and falling under Government control. However it still needs substantial ongoing financial support to put its finances on a long-term stable footing. Thames Water said in March that it would also continue talks with senior creditors on a parallel alternative transaction, given there was no certainty over a deal being finalised with KKR. The group was put under further pressure last week when it was fined a record £122.7 million by Ofwat after it was found to have broken rules over sewage treatment and paying out dividends. Earlier in May, Thames Water chief executive Chris Weston told MPs that if the company faced fines that were too high, it would struggle to get new investment. It is thought that the water sector is also in need of major reform in order to secure new investment. Water companies have faced public and political outrage over the extent of pollution, rising bills, high dividends, and executive pay and bonuses. Thames hiked consumer water bills for customers by an average of 31% in April and incurred further wrath over plans to pay senior bosses large bonuses linked to the water company securing a £3 billion emergency loan. These plans were then withdrawn after Sir Adrian admitted incorrectly stating that the so-called retention plan was 'insisted upon' by the company's lenders.
