Forest department prepares plan for new urban forest in Tiruchy
TIRUCHY: As part of the project to develop an urban forest spanning about 50 acres near the Butterfly Park, the forest department in Tiruchy is preparing a detailed project report (DPR), detailing fund requirements for further phases of work, for submission to the Union government.
Commencing work on the urban forest early this month with the initial allocation of Rs 2 crore by the Union government, the forest department has fenced the site and is now undertaking cleaning operations there.
The project under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's 'Nagar Van Yojana' involves large-scale tree plantation so as to create green spaces in the city and improve its air quality.
While offering financial support for both the development and maintenance of such green spaces, the initiative also promotes community involvement.
According to a senior forest department official, the DPR that is being prepared will include a comprehensive outline of the project's scope, objectives, design, and implementation strategy. It will also cover land assessment, water and soil analysis, selection of tree species, and a layout plan for planting, the official added.
District Forest Officer (DFO) S Krithiga told TNIE that fencing has already been installed around the site and added that initial cleaning operations are under way. "After enclosing the area with fencing, we commenced the clearance of thorny vegetation.
We plan to plant species that are well-suited for local conditions and that enhance biodiversity, including fruit-bearing and medicinal plants to attract birds and butterflies. The project will be carried out with the support of like-minded individuals who are passionate about creating a greener city," she said.

Ayodhya: A total of 45 kilograms of pure gold has been used in the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, according to Nripendra Mishra, the chairman of the Ram Temple Construction Committee. He said the estimated value of the gold, excluding taxes, is around Rs 50 crore. Gold has been used extensively in the doors on the ground floor of the temple and the throne of Lord Ram. In a statement, temple trust general secretary Champat Rai, on Friday advised the temple visitors to exercise patience for visits to the Ram Darbar. In 10 years, Goa loses a fifth of its tree cover
Margao: The state has lost over a fifth or 22% of its tree cover in recent years. Centre's data shows that Goa's tree cover peaked at 334sqkm in 2010-11, but fell to 258sqkm by 2021-22 — a loss of 76sqkm over a decade. This represents a 22.8% drop from the peak coverage. According to the latest data released by the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation in the 'EnviStats India 2025: Environment Statistics' report, Goa's tree cover peaked at 334sqkm in 2010-11, but declined to just 258sqkm by 2021-22 — a loss of 76sqkm over a decade. This represents a 22.8% reduction from the peak coverage. The data shows a significant initial recovery period from 2000 to 2010-11, when tree cover expanded from a mere 62sqkm to 334sqkm — a more than five-fold increase. However, this positive trend reversed sharply after 2010-11, with consistent year-on-year losses. The steepest decline occurred between 2015-16 and 2017-18, when tree cover dropped from 323sqkm to 272sqkm — a loss of 51sqkm in just two years. Experts said this period coincides with increased development pressures and infrastructure expansion across the state. The current tree cover of 258sqkm represents approximately 7% of Goa's total area of 3,702sqkm. Activists have already been calling for immediate action to reverse this trend and protect the remaining green cover in the state. The India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023 released by the Union environment ministry in Dec showed that from 2021 to 2023, Goa's total forest cover came down by 1.50sqkm or 150ha. Goa's total forest cover now stands at 2, loss of forest cover was higher in North Goa at 90ha, besides a loss of 60ha of forest cover in South Goa. Govt: Over 4,800 km rural roads built in last fiscal
Patna: With a view to improving connectivity, the rural works department (RWD) constructed 1,843 rural roads and 852 bridges in the last financial year. The total length of constructed roads was 4,818.36 km. According to details shared by the information and public relations department (IPRD), the RWD gave administrative approval for constructing 2,024 rural roads (5,250.62 km) and 1,211 bridges in the last financial year. "Out of this, 1,843 roads and 852 bridges were constructed in the last financial year," it said. Stating that the picture of villages is changing with improved rural connectivity, the report said the construction of roads and bridges not only facilitates transportation but also provides easier access to local trade, job creation, education, health, and social services. The report said out of 542 roads sanctioned for Patna division, 493 were completed, while in Tirhut division, 266 (out of 301) were built. Similarly, altogether 117 roads were constructed in Saran division, 102 in Purnia, 49 in Bhagalpur, 248 in Magadh, 223 in Darbhanga, 82 in Kosi, and 266 in Munger. A large number of bridges were also constructed in these divisions in the last financial year. In the current fiscal, the rural works dept has allocated a budget of Rs 991 crore under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund with the focus to improve rural connectivity.
