Mia & Wes on Main celebrates recent opening with ribbon-cutting

Yahooa day ago

After five years of creating designs for weddings, a London couple has opened a floral shop that is now booking for 2026.
With 25 years of experience in floral design, florists Mia and Wes Lovins opened their full-service floral shop in April.
"We both did floral and now we get to do it together," Mrs. Lovins said.
The couple, featured in the Kentucky Bride magazine twice, held a ribbon-cutting alongside the London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce June 2, in celebration of the two-month-old shop.
Although the Lovinses have served the community for years, they did not previously have a home for their business. However, with continued growth and success, the couple knew it was time to rent a space for their work.
When the florists visited their shop's two-story building on Main Street, they "knew immediately" that it was the location for them, noting curb appeal, parking, and its proximity to local funeral homes.
"Jesus worked it out and that's all we can say," Mr. Lovins said.
Mrs. Lovins said Mia & Wes stands out due to its unique designs. Mr. Lovins added that while their shop is different from others, it also remains "classy and timeless."
"Trends come and go but some things are timeless and that's what we want to stay with," Mr. Lovins stated.
The Lovinses said they also remember the married couples they have created floral designs for.
"It means more to us than just a sale," Mr. Lovins stated. "It's sentimental to us."
"It's kind of like we were a part of their new beginning and that's pretty precious," Mrs. Lovins added.
Both the Lovinses said blue hydrangeas are their favorite flower, finding the flower classy.
Floral work is particularly special to the couple as they are "working with God's creation."
"He gives us gifts and our gift is to be a floral designer. We get to use something he made," Mrs. Lovins stated. "Flowers are just meant for joy in all purposes — even in death."
In closing, Mrs Lovins said: "We're just thankful. Since we've been open, we feel like we've been in business for years and it's just because all the community has really supported us."
"All glory to God," Mr. Lovins added.
Mia & Wes on Main is located at 705 South Main Street in London. To learn more about the shop's services or book with them, call (606) 862-1942 or email wesley.lovins@gmail.com. Find Mia & Wes on Facebook by the shop name.

Meta and energy company announce plans for geothermal plant in New Mexico

Meta and a California-based geothermal energy company announced plans on Thursday to build a geothermal power plant in Northwestern New Mexico, as Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and other officials touted a report outlining how the state has the resources to produce substantial geothermal power. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and XGS Energy aim to build a geothermal energy site capable of producing 150 megawatts at a location that has not yet been named. A recent report indicates the Santa Fe region, as well as portions of Sandoval and Tao counties, are particularly well positioned to produce geothermal energy. "We sit on, no kidding, one of the best dry hot rock energy resources not just in Western United States but in the entire world," said Josh Prueher, XGS Energy CEO, during a news conference at the state Capitol, flanked by Lujan Grisham. "The statistics are staggering." Meta in 2019 opened a sprawling data center in Los Lunas where the tech giant stores videos, photos and other media that its billions of users have posted to the social network. It is unclear whether the new geothermal power plant would support its existing footprint in New Mexico and the Southwest or a future expansion. Prueher said XGS is considering public, private and tribal lands to site the planned plant and is engaged with landowners in each of those categories. Asked whether Sandoval, Santa Fe and Taos counties might be potential locations, Prueher said they could be. The 200-page "The Future of Geothermal in New Mexico" report, published by Project InnerSpace in collaboration with New Mexico Tech and the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, notes the potential for 163 gigawatts of geothermal power to be generated in the state. The Future of Geothermal in New Mexico The vast subsurface heat present in the state could help boost the Land of Enchantment's clean energy future, advocates of the project say. "It's a big damn deal," Lujan Grisham said, praising the economic and job creation impact the project could have. Geothermal resources, typically reservoirs of hot water that exist at various temperatures, generate renewable energy from hot water sources deep beneath Earth's surface. Most of the geothermal power plants in the U.S. are in western states and Hawaii, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, where geothermal energy resources are close to the earth's surface. California generates the most electricity from geothermal energy. Lujan Grisham said the project is not receiving state money at this time. The geothermal power plant in Northwestern New Mexico would be the second in the state, with one such power plant already in operation in Hidalgo County. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Notre Dame hires alum Jas Smith as Director of Operations for women's basketball

Notre Dame women's basketball has added a new member to the front-office family. Jas Smith is the new Director of Operations for the Fighting Irish. The 2016 Notre Dame graduate is returning after serving as the director of operations for LSU football since January of 2022. It's no shock that Smith was working for former Notre Dame football head coach Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge -- she served as his coordinator of on-campus recruiting at Notre Dame from 2018-2021. Advertisement Before that, she was an ambassador for Notre Dame football while an undergraduate student in South Bend. She has a degree in information technology management from Notre Dame. She also worked as an admissions counselor at Notre Dame from 2016-2017. She worked as a director for undergraduate admissions at Nova Southeastern University after leaving Notre Dame, and she had a stop at the Special Olympics in Miami, where she was a senior sports manager, in 2021 when she was between stints working for Kelly. She'll be working under new men's and women's basketball general manager Pat Garrity. The men's team is continuing to try to rebuild, while the women's team will be working to get over a disappointing Sweet 16 loss in last season's tournament. The women's team had been expected to compete for a championship. Welcome back to campus, Jas. Dollar dives on Trump's new trade threat

The dollar plunged on Thursday after US President Donald Trump threatened higher unilateral tariffs on trade partners, and oil see-sawed as traders evaluated the probability behind reports that Israel could be gearing up to strike Iran. Stocks traded mixed as investors navigated the double whammy of returning trade uncertainty and geopolitical volatility, while Boeing's share price slumped sharply in the wake of a deadly 787 Dreamliner crash in India. In New York, investors cheered benign US producer price data and a successful US Treasury auction that sent yields lower. But markets were leery after Trump on Wednesday said he would be sending letters within the next two weeks to other countries' governments to announce unilateral US levies on their exports to America. "This is the deal, you can take it or leave it," Trump told reporters. Investor unease about Trump's trade rhetoric is "causing a little bit of selling," said Jack Ablin of Cresset Capital Management. In the end, the S&P 500 finished up 0.4 percent after a see-saw session. All European stock markets finished lower, except London, which posted an uptick despite official data showing the UK economy shrank more than expected in April. The dollar was down against the euro, and at one point fell by more than one percent to its lowest point in three years against the European single currency. "Trump has done it again. The US president has rattled markets with fresh threats of unilateral tariff rates on several trading partners," said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at Markets were also following reports that Israel was poised to launch airstrikes on Iran. Trump called Thursday on Israel not to attack Iran, saying a deal on its nuclear program remained close. But Iran has ramped up rhetorical pressure before upcoming talks, including with a threat to strike American bases in the region if the negotiations break down and conflict erupts. Oil prices, which had initially jumped on Wednesday on the heightened tensions, flipped direction for much Thursday, finishing modestly lower. Back in New York, Boeing dropped nearly five percent after a London-bound Air India plane -- a Boeing 787 -- crashed in Ahmedabad with 242 people aboard. The US planemaker declared itself ready to support Air India following the crash, the first involving a 787 Dreamliner. - Key figures at around 2015 GMT - New York - Dow: UP 0.2 percent at 42,967.62 (close) New York - S&P 500: UP 0.4 percent at 6,045.26 (close) New York - Nasdaq Composite: UP 0.2 percent at 19,662.49 (close) London - FTSE 100: UP 0.2 percent at 8,884.92 (close) Paris - CAC 40: DOWN 0.1 percent at 7,765.11 (close) Frankfurt - DAX: DOWN 0.7 percent at 23,771.45 (close) Tokyo - Nikkei 225: DOWN 0.7 percent at 38,173.09 (close) Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 1.4 percent at 24,035.38 (close) Shanghai - Composite: FLAT at 3,402.66 (close) Euro/dollar: UP at $1.1583 from $1.1487 on Wednesday Pound/dollar: UP at $1.3605 from $1.3547 Dollar/yen: DOWN at 143.56 yen from 144.56 yen Euro/pound: UP at 85.11 pence from 84.79 pence Brent North Sea Crude: DOWN 0.6 $69.36 per barrel West Texas Intermediate: DOWN 0.2 percent at $68.04 per barrel bur-jmb/acb Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
