Trent Alexander-Arnold speaks out about Real Madrid as he makes Liverpool point

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Trent Alexander-Arnold has not been at Real Madrid for long, but the England international's new team-mates have already made an impression following his move from Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that while he knew his Real Madrid team-mates were going to be world-class, he didn't expect them to be so friendly. The England international moved to Los Blancos after the La Liga giants agreed to pay Liverpool £10million to sign him a month ahead of schedule.
He was initially going to move to the Spanish capital as a free agent, but Real's desire to include Alexander-Arnold in their Club World Cup squad prompted them to pay a fee to sign him earlier. In their final group match in the USA, Xabi Alonso deployed the right-back for the full 90 minutes as they beat RB Salzburg 3-0.

It was the latest sign that the defender is further settling into life at the 15-time European champions. Even Alexander-Arnold, who knew the quality they'd possess having faced them five times for his boyhood club, is surprised by the way his new team-mates have taken to him.

Speaking to reporters after Real overcame the Austrian side, Alexander-Arnold said: "Every player is impressing me. From when I played against Real Madrid, [I knew] all the players are world class.
"But just the way the lads are; when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect. But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing.
"It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform. The settlement period now is done.
"It's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.'
Alexander-Arnold won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup (in its previous format) and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool. Throughout his time at Anfield, he contributed 67 assists, more than any other defender in Premier League history.

When he arrived at his new club, he endeared himself to his colleagues and supporters by speaking in Spanish during his unveiling. While that has gone some way to helping him make a good impression, Alexander-Arnold admits he is still struggling to get to grips with the language.
He added: "Of course speaking and being a part of the conversation is harder. You work hard to try and understand what people are saying and be a part of it.

"But the manager speaks to me a lot individually to make sure I understand everything that gets said. The meetings are in Spanish so he goes out his way and the staff go out the way to make sure I understand the game plan. So there's differences but it's just football.'
Real progressed into the last 16 of the competition as group winners. They started the campaign with a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, before overcoming Mexican team Pachuca and then Salzburg.
They face Juventus, who were demolished 5-2 by Manchester City in their final group match, in the next round on July 1.

Celtic have announced their third signing of the summer after confirming a deal for Swedish international winger Benjamin Nygren from FC Nordsjælland for a reported fee of £1.2million, subject to international clearance. The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year-deal at Celtic Park and becomes the club's third arrival during the transfer window following the free transfer arrivals of Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan from Arsenal and Aberdeen respectively. He also received widespread attention the season prior for scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 Conference League thrashing of Fenerbahce in October 2023. However, it was Belgian club Genk who won the race for his signature, agreeing a record fee of €5million with the Swedish club for the then 17-year-old. With regular game time hard to come by, he moved to Dutch outfit SC Heerenveen on a season-long loan, where he scored seven goals in 32 appearances, before signing for FC Nordsjælland in 2022, where he scored 35 goals in 106 appearances. Rated as a bargain transfer by many, Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers hailed the arrival of Nygren as an 'exciting' move for the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We're delighted to have brought Benjamin to Celtic,' Rodgers told the club's official website. 'We're all looking forward to working with him. He's an exciting, quality player who will add to our attacking options in the squad. He's a young player who's already gained plenty of experience at club level, while his impressive performances last season also saw him gain his first caps for Sweden. 'Joining Celtic is the next step up in his career, and having spoken to him, he's delighted to be here and is ready to take on the exciting challenges ahead at home and in Europe. He's a player that I'm sure our supporters will enjoy watching and it's great to have him as part of our squad.' 'I feel amazing to have signed for Celtic, it's so nice to be here,' added Nygren. 'I'm a player who wants to create a lot of chances and go towards goal. I'm a link between the defence and the offence and I can run a lot. I'm an offensive-minded player but I also work hard and try to do my best in all parts of the game. 'I'm a very competitive person and this is something that I love about Celtic. It's a huge club and I love that. And, also, the winning mentality. I want to be with similar-minded people who also love to win. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

SunSport were first to reveal the Northern Irishman was eyeing a stunning cut-price deal for Nordsjaelland playmaker Benjamin Nygren to join Kieran Tierney at Parkhead this summer. Celtic were locked in talks with the Danish club for some time and SunSport understands they've thrashed out a deal worth around £2million for the 23-year-old, who had just six months left on his contract. Now the Scottish champions have confirmed the news fans have been waiting as they've announced the Swedish sensation as their newest recruit. Nygren had plenty of options available to him after making it clear to Nordsjaelland he wasn't going to extend his contract beyond this year. Clubs from across Europe began circling the player - including Anderlecht and Copenhagen - but it didn't take long for Nygren to choose Glasgow as his next destination. The 23-year-old arrives in Scotland with big expectations after emerging as one of Sweden's latest young talents following his electric start to his international career this year. Nygren has scored two goals in four senior caps and even netted a wondergoal against Hungary on June 6. But he's no stranger to the limelight, having once been on the radar of European giants such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City and both Milan heavyweights. That was when he was just 17 and breaking through into the first team at IFK Goteborg. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up He visited the aforementioned clubs for trials but ended up staying in Sweden for regular first team football, before he was snapped up by Gent for £4m when he was still a teenager. Nygren is a versatile player who can play anywhere across the frontline and operated as a second striker for his national team in recent games. But former IFK Gothenburg sporting director Mats Gren informed SunSport that his best position is in fact through the middle as a No10. He said: "When Benjamin plays on the right wing or as a No9, he can be effective. Benjamin Nygren's career 2013 (youth level) - 2019: IFK Goteborg - 15 games (six goals, five assists) 2019 - 2022: Genk - seven games (one goal) 2020 - 2022: Heerenveen (loan) - 51 games (seven goals, six assists) 2022 --: Nordsjaelland - 107 games (35 goals, eight assists) 'However, he is best as a No10. That is where all his qualities can be on show. 'Benjamin is an intelligent attacker. His left foot is fantastic and he can score goals and assist. 'His final ball is always very good and he can finish when he gets a chance. He has the lot! 'He is not slow but he's maybe not super fast, and that's the only thing you can say that he lacks. 'However, he is quick enough to get away from opponents and has very good vision and passing.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

'It only really makes sense to sell... but we'll regret it'

We asked for your views on the future of Harvey Elliott and whether it should be at Liverpool. Here are some of your comments:Ian: It's a tough one because you can see what he can do but when given chances starting for Liverpool he's not performed. The England Under-21 displays will help his price tag for us He's not going to get a chance at Liverpool this season and with such a young midfield there's no reason it'll be different next season. So while I'd prefer to loan him, it only really makes sense to sell. But we'll regret Looks great at the U21 tournament, but doesn't contribute consistently or take his chance to impress when given a start at Liverpool. Looks OK on substitute appearances, but nothing game-changing. I like Harvey and his commitment. Maybe let him have game time elsewhere and bring him back when he's Definitely keep Harvey, either through a sale and buy-back option, or as a back-up to Mo Salah. Just play him more in the advanced role. He's doing Keep Harvey at Anfield to complement that formidable midfield. His best is still to There is no way Elliott should be sold by Liverpool. He always gives 100%, is still developing and improving and is loyal to the club. We've learned with Trent Alexander-Arnold that is worth a lot!Brian: If Harvey wasn't a Liverpool player already we'd be looking to buy him. At 22, he is as talented as Alexis Mac Allister in midfield and as good a finisher as Salah. It would be madness to let him He's such a clever footballer. I would be absolutely gutted if Liverpool let him go. You can't blame him for going if he's not getting game time. If it's development and he isn't going to be used in the near term, loan him to a top European club. He's too good to let up for news alerts about the Premier League club you support
