Arattu mandapam protection work to begin in two weeks
Thiruvananthapuram: The protection work of the 'arattu kalmandapam' at Shanghumugham will begin within two weeks as part of the broader Shanghumugham Beach protection project.
The irrigation department, which is implementing the initiative, will float a tender this week to install 120 metres of polypropylene geotubes around the mandapam. The project, funded with Rs 35 lakh from the MLA fund of local legislator Antony Raju, received administrative sanction from district collector Anu Kumari on Saturday.
Raju also plans to submit a proposal to the state govt on Monday, seeking approval to extend the geotube protection along the entire beach, in place of the proposed offshore breakwater using rock granules.
However, this extended beach protection project will be implemented only after the state govt gives its decision.
"This is a crucial step in preserving a heritage structure of deep cultural and religious significance to our city," said Raju. "Geotubes offer an eco-friendly option that protects the arattu mandapam without disturbing the beach's natural beauty."
Raju also plans to lodge a formal complaint with tourism minister PA Mohammed Riyas, after the tourism department declined to fund the geotube project citing a budget shortfall.

A tourism department official defended the decision, stating that financial constraints had prevented the allocation. However, he said: "We support this move and will assist in all technical clearances and project monitoring."
The geotube installation follows recommendations from a high-level expert committee led by MV Ramana Murthy of the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR). The committee, chaired by Raju, had assessed multiple coastal protection methods, including offshore geotubes, groynes, diaphragm walls, and sand nourishment.
Shanghumugham Beach, the sacred 'Arattukadavu' for Lord Padmanabhaswamy's annual holy bath, has suffered severe erosion in recent years. Reports from the NCCR and state agencies indicate coastal land loss of nearly 4.7 metres annually, endangering heritage structures and local infrastructure.

And at that setting, whirring at 12000+ RPM, this fan is really fast and powerful. With Delhi humidity kicking in over the past few weeks, a few seconds in front of the BFF meant you were at least sweat-free. The real power of the BLDC fans is felt only after you ramp up the speed at least midway. At this point, you can feel the air hit your face even from a small distance. At 100, the fan blows your hair all over the place and has a distinct whirring sound. Since the fan head can be tilted 180 degrees, I used this on my work desk and sofa with the fans facing me. That worked well and kept me cool even when the power decided to play hide and seek when the demand peaked in UP. Then there is IceTouch. A long press on the dial switches this mode on and offers a slight nip along with the powerful wind. This was especially helpful when used outdoors under the sweltering sun. If you find some shade too, then you have a temporary summer sanctuary of your own. With IceTouch on, I noticed a bit of condensation on the front of the fan. The device is pretty compact and can easily slip into the side pocket of your office bag, or even into your denims. The design is also very safe and you can hardly even see the blades of the fan, so no chances of accidents. The 3600 mAh battery can last you an entire working day, but not if IceTouch is on all the while — so use that feature sparingly. The only issue I spotted with the BFF was that it took a few attempts to switch it off — again a double press on the dial, but there were no challenges switching it on. At Rs 2,049, the Nuuk BFF is a great accessory for those struggling with the summers and those who have to spend a lot of time outdoors. Rope car project at Yelagiri gains steam, ministers pitch for more funds to boost tourism
TIRUPATTUR: Efforts are under way to complete the construction of a rope car at Yelagiri Hills by joining hands with a private organisation, Tourism Minister R Rajendran said on Sunday. He was speaking at the Kodai Vizha (Summer Festival), which returned this year after a gap of six years. The festival was inaugurated by Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports Minister E V Velu and Tourism Minister R Rajendran. Welfare measures worth Rs 1.33 crore were distributed to 37 beneficiaries on the occasion. Speaking at the event, Minister Velu said, 'Yelagiri is often called the 'Nilgiris of the poor'. While the real Nilgiris attracts tourists from other states and even abroad, Yelagiri remains a destination mainly for poor and ordinary people. I request the tourism minister to sanction substantial funds and projects — beyond just a rope car — to develop Yelagiri on par with the Nilgiris so that more tourists will visit.' He further noted that although the state government allocates funds for people-centric schemes, budgetary support for tourism remains limited. Buses were sent under full security cover to test preparedness. The first batch of pilgrims will be flagged off from the Jammu base camp on July 2. The Yatra will formally begin on July 3 via both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner of Jammu, Sachin Kumar Vaishy, said all preparations for the Yatra have been completed. 'Today, tokens will be distributed at Saraswati Dham. We appeal to people to come in large numbers; we will provide them with all the necessary facilities, and no one will face any issues. We have full preparations for everything,' he said. The exercise aimed to assess emergency preparedness in the event of landslides or other natural disasters during the pilgrimage and to ensure a prompt response in case of any unfortunate incident. The CRPF has intensified surveillance by deploying K-9 (dog) squads alongside its personnel on key routes used by thousands of pilgrims and has strengthened highway patrols, with special focus on sensitive stretches such as the Udhampur sector. Addressing the meeting, the DGP emphasised the need for officers to maintain very close coordination, describing it as crucial to ensuring an incident-free Yatra. He directed that zonal and sectoral officers must have up-to-date information about the availability and location of special teams such as Drone Units, Bomb Disposal Squads, Dog Squads and Quick Response Teams (QRTs), to ensure these teams can be deployed in real time in case of any emergency.
