RHP Adam Ottavino rides revolving door to free agency again
April 10 - Right-hander Adam Ottavino elected free agency for the second time in a week after he was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees and cleared waivers.
Ottavino first was signed by the Yankees on April 1, was designated for assignment Friday then re-signed with them on Sunday. Another DFA has led to his current tour of free agency.
In the process, the veteran delivered three scoreless relief appearances for the Yankees. His first short stay with the club came about after reliever Devin Williams went on the three-day paternity list.
Ottavino could have elected a minor league assignment to remain with the Yankees but instead became a free agent.
In 15 major league seasons, the 39-year-old has gone 41-43 with 46 saves and a 3.48 ERA in 727 appearances (three starts). He has pitched in five different organizations, including the Colorado Rockies for seven seasons (2012-18) and the Yankees from 2019-20 before his brief stay this season.

June 5 - Angel Martinez hit a two-run homer in the first inning to back 5 2/3 stellar innings from Luis L. Ortiz as the visiting Cleveland Guardians earned a 4-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. The Guardians won for only the third time in their past 11 regular-season visits to New York thanks to the duo of Martinez and Ortiz. Martinez entered the game in a 6-for-40 skid but gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead. Following a walk to Steven Kwan, he got a first-pitch cutter and hammered it into the right field bleachers. Jose Ramirez doubled after Martinez went deep to extend his on-base streak to 30 games and scored on a two-out double by Daniel Schneemann. Ortiz earned his first win since beating the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 18. The right-hander entered 0-4 with a 3.79 ERA in his previous seven outings. Ramirez started a double play on Anthony Volpe to end the second and then another double play on Ben Rice when the original was overturned following a Cleveland challenge. Schmidt settled down after the rocky start and allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one. Tim Herrin pitched 1 1/3 innings and ended the seventh by getting Anthony Volpe on a double play. Hunter Gaddis pitched the eighth and Emmanuel Clase worked a non-save situation in the ninth to finish off Cleveland's eighth shutout. Clase put two on by allowing hits to Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger but finished it off by fanning Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. The Yankees were blanked for the second time this season. June 4 - Jazz Chisholm Jr. snapped a tie by homering on the first pitch of the seventh inning to help Carlos Rodon get his seventh straight victory as the New York Yankees returned from their longest road trip of the season and hung on to beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Tuesday night. Activated from the injured list Tuesday after missing 28 games with an oblique injury, Chisholm had New York's first hit off Cleveland's Tanner Bibee (4-6) in the fifth before snapping a 1-1 tie in the seventh. Chisholm gave the Yankees the lead when he lifted a fastball into the right field seats for his eighth homer this season and first since April 21 in Cleveland. After Chisholm's 358-foot shot, Volpe gave the Yankees a two-run lead when he lifted a 3-1 sweeper 372 feet into the left field seats. It was Volpe's first home run since May 12 in Seattle. Chisholm and Volpe helped the Yankees win their fifth straight game at home following a 6-3 road trip against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers. Rodon (8-3) took a shutout into the seventh before allowing Jose Ramirez to single, steal second and score on a base hit by David Fry. Rodon stranded Fry at third and was aided by center fielder Trent Grisham throwing Gabriel Arias out at second trying to stretch a single. Rodon allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out eight, walked one and is 7-0 with a 1.27 ERA in his past nine starts. Rodon retired 17 straight before losing the lead in the seventh. He kept the game tied by retiring Bo Naylor on a fly ball with two on. DJ LeMahieu had an RBI single in the fifth after Chisholm got New York's first hit on a bloop single to left. Aaron Judge was 0-for-2 with two walks, lowering his average to .387. Mark Leiter Jr. retired Ramirez with a runner on to end the eighth. Devin Williams allowed an RBI single to pinch hitter Daniel Schneeman before getting Naylor to fly out to secure his sixth save. Bibee allowed three runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Yankees reinstate 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr., RHP Fernando Cruz from IL
June 3 - The New York Yankees reinstated second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and reliever Fernando Cruz from the injured list on Tuesday. The team also put right-hander Luke Weaver on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sunday) with a left hamstring strain, recalled right-hander Yerry de los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, optioned infielder Jorbit Vivas to Triple-A and designated right-hander Carlos Carrasco for assignment. Chisholm, 27, has not played in the majors since April 29 due to an oblique strain. The former All-Star went 3-for-9 with a double and a stolen base in a three-game rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset. Chisholm batted .181 with seven homers, 17 RBIs and 39 strikeouts in 30 games before landing on the 10-day IL. Cruz, 35, went on the 15-day IL on May 22 with shoulder inflammation. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 2.66 ERA and two saves in 21 appearances out of the bullpen this season. Weaver, 31, is 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and eight saves in 24 relief appearances this season. He has struck out 24 and walked seven in 25 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old de los Santos has no decisions and a 3.00 ERA in 10 relief appearances for the Yankees this season.
