Man accused of Solihull vape shop murder denies role 'in tragedy'
A man accused of murdering a 17-year-old in a vape shop has said he played "no part in this tragedy", a court has heard. Reuben Higgins was fatally stabbed on Station Road in Marston Green, Solihull, on 29 October last year and died at the scene.Abdurrahman Summers, 18, and two 15-year-old boys, who cannot be named due to their age, have denied murdering Mr Higgins and are on trial at Birmingham Crown Court.Mr Summers said in a statement he had met up with friends on the day in question and had gone to a shop to buy drinks and snacks. He denied knowing the victim or attacking him.
Mr Summers, from Yardley, added he played "no part in this tragedy".He is also charged with possession of a bladed article, which he denies.In court on Monday, the teenagers' defence lawyers said the defendants would not be giving evidence at their trial, but statements they had submitted during earlier police interviews were read out.The court previously heard that a fourth suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is believed to have fled the country.
A prosecution lawyer read the statements to the jury as part of a set of "agreed facts" between the two sides, which he outlined before closing his case.The "agreed facts" included a forensic examination that found the three teenagers' fingerprints on the Vape Minimarket's double-door entrance, plus those of Mr Higgins, the lawyer said. A mobile phone belonging to one of the 15-year-olds was also found at the shop, while a cached video of Mr Summers with a knife was later recovered from his phone, the court heard.Earlier in the trial, a witness who was working in the shop that day, said Reuben had run inside and tried to block the door, before three or four men began striking the shop's entrance trying to get in.
'Happened so fast'
In his statement for police interviews, one of the 15-year-old defendants said he was hanging out with friends in Marston Green when things "got aggressive" between members of his and another group.He said he ended up being involved in "an altercation" in the shop but "I did not stab him", adding that "it all happened so fast."The other 15-year-old boy did not submit statements in his police interviews, and had instead given a "no comment" response to questions.As part of the "agreed facts" outlined on Monday, the jury also heard the fourth suspect's mother had booked flights for her and her son to Pakistan in October with a return date in November, but the son had not used his return ticket.After the prosecution closed its case, the three defence lawyers for the teenagers said they would not bring any further evidence.The trial continues.

A murdered sheep farmer has been remembered as a loving relative and proud Co Kerry man. The town of Kenmare was rocked last month when following the disappearance of Michael Gaine, human remains found on his land were confirmed to be his. Mourners packed Holy Cross Church in the town on Saturday morning to pay their final respects to the 56-year-old and support his family. He recalled his passion for rallying, farming, current affairs, holidays and music. 'As we all know, Michael was generous. Incredibly generous. He had time for everyone and would chip in to help any time and any place,' he said. 'Michael seemed to always find the time to do the work of three men on his own farm, help out friends, family and neighbours, keep up to speed on current affairs and enjoy himself. 'He loved life, he always made the most of it and he truly lived every single moment. Whether you met him during lambing or while on a trip away to a car show or rally event, he always had the iconic twinkle in his eye – the 'I'm delighted to see you', 'I'm in great form', 'let's go and enjoy ourselves' glint in his eye.' He also said that Mr Gaine's wife Janice and sisters knew his soft caring side. 'Caring and affectionate. Kind and considerate. He was not afraid to show his emotions. He was also brave, fearless and strong,' he said. 'We will all miss Michael terribly. I know I'll miss our phone calls the most, as well as that happy feeling that Michael gave you when you were with him. 'He was always the glue that held the Rally of the Lakes weekend together and I will always look back very fondly on our adventures to the best spectating spots in Kerry.' Last month, a man aged in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of Mr Gaine's murder. He was held for questioning for one day before being released without charge from Killarney garda station.

Bristol man Jardel Edwards jailed after gun found in drawers
A man has been jailed after a gun and taser were found in his chest of drawers. Jardel Edwards, 22, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court after pleading guilty to two counts of being in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He also admitted being in possession of Class A drugs crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply, which plain-clothed police officers found in his pockets when he was stopped on 6 February in Webb Street, then searched his home in Cotton Mill Lane, Barton Hill, where they found the weapons in his bedroom, as well as further evidence of drugs supply. Edwards was sentenced to eight years in prison on Thursday - five years for the firearms offences and three years for the drugs Insp Tom Tooth of Avon and Somerset Police said: "Edwards' evasive behaviour when officers first spoke to him led them to believe he had something to hide."It is clear from the amount of drugs that Edwards' had in his possession that he had intended to sell them, bringing further harm to our communities through drug use and drug-related crime."
