Brickbat: Minimum Effort
Former Santa Cruz County, Arizona, Treasurer Elizabeth Gutfahr was sentenced to 10 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to embezzling over $38 million in public funds over 10 years, in what her own attorney called "one of the dumbest, ill-conceived, short-sighted, and most audacious crimes in Arizona state history." Her scheme involved moving taxpayer money into her private accounts with little effort to hide it, yet it went unnoticed until recently, when her bank noticed irregular activities in 2024 and alerted law enforcement. To recover some of the stolen funds, Santa Cruz County is selling off assets like real estate, livestock, and luxury cars Gutfahr purchased, recovering nearly $3 million so far.

Canadian dies while in ICE custody in Florida, U.S. agency says
A Canadian citizen died while in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this week, the agency says. Johnny Noviello, 49, died in a detention centre in Florida on Monday, an ICE news release says. The cause of death is unknown and is under investigation, according to the release. Despite having Canadian citizenship, Noviello had been in the U.S. since 1988 and became a lawful permanent resident in 1991, the release says. In 2023, he was convicted of a number of offences — including racketeering and drug trafficking — and had been sentenced to 12 months in prison. Public court documents from that case state that Noviello had epilepsy which required medication to control his seizures. ICE agents arrested Noviello in May and he was being detained "pending removal proceedings," the agency's news release said. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand posted a statement on social media Thursday saying that the government had been notified of Noivello's death. "Canadian consular officials are urgently seeking more information from U.S. officials. I offer my sincere condolences to the family," she wrote in a post on X. Noviello's death comes as ICE agents have been making sweeping arrests across the United States. Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a raft of executive orders that aim to clamp down on illegal immigration and advance his goal of deporting millions of immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff and the main architect of Trump's immigration policies, has pushed ICE to aim for at least 3,000 arrests a day, up from about 650 a day during the first five months of Trump's second term. WATCH | Canadian woman describes her ICE detainment: Trump himself has called on ICE officials "to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest mass deportation program in history." The immigration crackdown sparked massive protests in Los Angeles earlier this month. Trump responded to the demonstrations by ordering troops into the city, drawing the ire of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Noviello isn't the only Canadian to have been arrested in the U.S. since the ICE sweeps began. Jasmine Mooney from B.C. was arrested and held for nearly two weeks after trying to get a work visa renewed. She was released and returned to Canada in mid-March.

Arvelo, director of the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, said in a news release. Philadelphia Eagles counterfeit merchandise at an anti-counterfeiting press conference at the Phoenix Convention Center. Consumers should use caution before buying expensive items from unfamiliar online sellers. Purchasing merchandise from authorized dealers that are reputable sources for quality merchandise helps ensure that your transaction will be safe, and concerns will be handled responsibly. Look out for poor quality, sloppy stitching, missing security labels or irregular markings on apparel. Check your online bank statements. Keep a record of purchases and copies of confirmation pages and compare them to bank statements. If there is a discrepancy, consumers should report it immediately. Zohran Mamdani Hits Back At Eric Adams' Dig As NYC Mayoral Race Heats Up
New York Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani, who is on the verge of securing the Democratic Party's nomination in New York City's mayoral race, on Thursday addressed the shade Eric Adams threw at him over his nails, accusing the incumbent mayor of 'trying to distract from his own record.' Adams launched his independent reelection campaign on Thursday following his decision to skip the Democratic primary this time around, taking aim at Mamdani, who managed a surprise upset against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who was considered the front-runner, having the backing of the Democratic establishment and a significant fundraising advantage in Tuesday's primary. 'This election is a choice between a candidate with a blue collar and one with a ... silver spoon, a choice between dirty fingernails and manicured nails,' Adams said, alluding to Mamdani. In an interview with CNN's 'Erin Burnett Outfront,' Mamdani joked his nails aren't 'looking great right now,' and seemed unfazed by Adams' words. 'You know, I understand what he's doing. He's trying to distract from his own record,' Mamdani added. 'I would much rather talk about me than I would about his record if I was him and so that's what he's going to be doing over the next few months, and we will continue to remind New Yorkers, what's on the ballot. It's affordability,' Mamdani, who ran a grassroots campaign focused on addressing New Yorkers' concerns about the cost of living, continued. Adams was charged with multiple felony corruption charges in September 2024, but a judge dismissed his case. The mayor faced allegations that his legal team offered to help President Donald Trump implement his immigration agenda in exchange for having his charges dropped, which he has denied. As Mamdani garners traction, Adams held a meeting with business leaders on Wednesday to discuss how to stop the democratic socialist from winning November's general election, according to The New York Times. Meanwhile, despite his underwhelming performance in the Democratic primary, Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amid allegations of workplace harassment that he denies, is planning to remain in the race as an independent, according to CNN, estimating that the general electorate will be more sympathetic to his candidacy.
