Yahoo11-05-2025

Limestone Stakes winner Shisospicy scored her second straight stakes victory with a dominant 4¼-length win over Kilwin in Saturday's sixth running of the $224,625 Mamzelle Stakes (L)) for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Jose Ortiz and trained by Jose D'Angelo, Shisospicy clocked 5½ furlongs on firm turf in a stakes record 1:01.46 for Josh Mendez's Morplay Racing LLC. Shisospicy shaved nearly 1½ seconds off Danse Macabre's 2023 mark of 1:02.98 and nearly bested Queen Maxima's course record of 1:01.29 set on Kentucky Oaks Day.

'In her last start the ground was soft and today the track was a lot better for her,' D'Angelo said. 'In her last workout, I tried to relax her a little bit and close. She was able to do that today – relax and close hard.'
Breaking alertly from post position No. 9 in the field of 13, Shisospicy rated just off the right hip of pacesetter Dreamaway, who zipped the first quarter mile in :21.72 and the half in :44.03. Shisospicy put away Dreamaway with more than an eighth of mile to the finish and coasted to the powerful victory without a challenge.
Shisospicy paid $4.80 for the win as the 7-5 favorite.
Mechaya, with Luan Machado up at 26-1, was third, 2 1/3 lengths behind Kilwin.

Dreamaway, Laurice, Bunratty Manor (IRE), It Ain't Two (GB), Civetta, Avientot, Mighty Eriu (IRE), Bonne Fille, Anakarina and Stay Classy completed the order of finish. Hey Bertie, Lovely Emma, Me Governor and Serving Time (GB) were scratched.
The victory was worth $129,820 and increased Shisospicy's earnings to $415,370 with a record of 4-1-1 from six starts. She is unbeaten in three starts on grass.
'Our goal is always to have fun and this was a lot of fun,' said Rich Mendez, the founder of Morplay Racing. 'We knew after the Limestone we had a lot of confidence with her moving forward. She's run so well in all of her starts. Her performance today really solidified that.'
Added D'Angelo, 'Our plan now is to go to Saratoga with her.'
Shisospicy is a daughter of Mitole out of the Into Mischief mare Mischief Galore and was bred in Kentucky by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt.

Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

The Minnesota Vikings will keep Wes Phillips as their offensive coordinator for a little while longer. According to Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune, the Vikings and Phillips have agreed to a contract extension. Phillips' deal was set to expire after the 2025 season, but the team is adding one more year to his contract, keeping him on the coaching staff through 2026. Advertisement Phillips joined the Vikings as their offensive coordinator in 2022 after three years with the Los Angeles Rams on Sean McVay's staff. Before that, he was Washington's tight ends coach from 2014-2018, spending three years on the same staff as McVay and two years with Kevin O'Connell. The Vikings have ranked seventh, 10th and 12th in total yards under Phillips the last three years but will look to improve those numbers in 2025 with J.J. McCarthy taking over as the starting quarterback. This article originally appeared on Vikings Wire: Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

ESPN's Greg McElroy ranks Georgia's defense among nation's best

ESPN analyst Greg McElroy has high hopes for the Georgia Bulldog defense. In his preseason ranking of the top 10 defenses in football, he ranked Georgia fourth. "This might be a little controversial because they were not quite the same last year as they were in year's past," McElroy prefaced. Advertisement Georgia's defense was ranked 23rd in points allowed per game in 2024. That isn't bad, but it's far from the dominance Georgia showed in 2021-23 when the defense never ranked below 5th in points allowed per game. So why does McElroy rank Georgia's defense 4th? "I trust Kirby Smart," McElroy said, "I think he's one of the best defensive minds in the entire country. He creates a culture of physicality and toughness. It's hard to play against this group regularly." There's the question of how Georgia will be able to replace the talent of NFL first-round picks Jalon Walker, Mykel Williams, and Malaki Starks. However, McElroy says fans shouldn't be worried about the talent Georgia lost because of UGA's track record. Advertisement "When have you ever been super concerned about the past departures we've seen on Georgia's defense? They've had a lot of guys shuffling in and out of the lineup last year. Yet, they still played pretty good football for most of the year." Georgia was considered one of the biggest losers of the 2025 NFL draft due to losing nine defensive players in the NFL draft. The Bulldogs also lost nine players via the transfer portal. However, McElroy believes Georgia's high-level freshmen and sophomores will be able to fill the holes left by the massive exodus. Only three team defenses ranked ahead of Georgia: Ohio State placed No. 3, Penn State placed No. 2, and SEC rival Texas placed No. 1. Georgia and Texas will play each other in Week 12, and college football fans will see which defense is stronger.
