Barceló Hotel Group continues its international expansion with the opening of Barceló Nasandhura Malé, the first five-star hotel in the capital of the Maldives.
With prime seafront location and unobstructed views of the turquoise Maldivian waters, the new Barceló Nasandhura Malé stands out both for its excellent location and original design, offering guests a holistic experience in a blissful destination.
The hotel will have 136 rooms of various categories and 116 exclusive apartments, offering guests luxurious urban accommodation in the vibrant city of Malé.
A hotel where tranquillity meets elegance
Barceló Nasandhura Malé enjoys a prime location, directly opposite the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and just a 10-minute drive from Velana International Airport.
The culinary experience at the new Barceló Nasandhura Malé comprises three restaurants, a snack bar and a shisha lounge: Alimas, the lounge café located on the ground floor; Oivaru, an all-day buffet-style restaurant; Dons, specialising in Chinese cuisine; rooftop bar and lounge BHeaven, offering a variety of signature mocktails and shisha area; and finally, the Pool Bar, which gives guests the opportunity to relax by the city's first and only oceanfront pool.
Barceló Nasandhura Malé also offers an extensive wellness area with a wide range of services including a spa and six luxurious treatment rooms. The hotel's fully equipped fitness centre boasts unbeatable views of the sea, creating the perfect setting for guests to workout.
In addition, the new Barceló Nasandhura Malé hotel offers more than 1,000 sq m of spacious facilities for MICE events making it an ideal venue for hosting conferences, exhibitions or corporate conventions.
The Maldives, key to expansion in Asia
With this new opening, Barceló Hotel Group reaffirms its commitment to increasing its presence in Asia where it currently manages 11 hotels in six countries: Maldives, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE and Oman.
Barceló Nasandhura Malé is the group's second hotel in the Maldives, where just over a year ago it opened Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, a 5-star resort comprising 100 luxury villas, 30 of which are overwater. This hotel is located on the Bodufinolhu island, in the South Ari Atoll, next to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), one of the world's most renowned destinations for spotting whale sharks. The Bahrain Space Agency (BSA) announced the launch of its first specialised payload for cloud detection and identification of satellite imagery. The project utilises advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese company Star Vision and the Omani company 'Oman Lens,' aboard a joint satellite between the Sultanate of Oman and the People's Republic of China. The project involves a group of BSA engineers in the design, development, and testing of advanced AI algorithms, which are being implemented on board a satellite operating in low Earth orbit. The project aims to build national capacity in the field of AI algorithm development, enhancing local competencies, stimulating continuous innovation, and consolidating the Kingdom's position as a regional hub for space innovation. These algorithms are dedicated to analysing satellite images in real time, detecting and identifying clouds, estimating their coverage in images, and then automatically replacing them with parts of previous images before transmitting the data to ground stations. This process improves the efficiency of space systems and enhances the quality of the extracted data, which is subsequently used in a variety of applications, such as urban planning, air and water quality monitoring, ship identification and location, and other space-based applications that provide valuable data to a wide range of public and private sector entities. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of the BSA, highlighted that the initiative stands as a major achievement for the organisation, reinforcing Bahrain's status as a frontrunner in the space sector following the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The project also underscores the BSA's international partnerships and the technical and scientific expertise of its staff, which have been instrumental in making this distinguished collaboration possible. Space Engineer Yaqoob Al Qassab noted that the project is among several initiatives designed to strengthen Bahrain's national expertise in developing and integrating AI algorithms with satellite systems. The technical team involved serves as the core of a dedicated Bahraini group focused on applying AI technology in space to support sustainable development goals. He also mentioned that the team is now engaged in a new collaborative project with the same partners, targeting the deployment of advanced algorithms for automated maritime vessel detection from space. This project marks the first Bahraini–Omani cooperation in the space sector, and represents the third Arab–Chinese space cooperation, following the Bahraini–Egyptian–Chinese collaboration on lunar projects. China accelerates EV battery swapping with new tech from CATL

TDT | agencies China is not just leading the global electric vehicle (EV) market—it's poised to transform the way EVs are powered. Chinese automakers and battery giants are now pushing battery swapping technology to new heights. Changan Automobile has launched the first 1,000 units of its Oshan 520 sedan, primarily targeting taxi services. However, these vehicles mark a major technological leap as the first to feature CATL's innovative Choco-SEB swappable battery packs. These batteries can be exchanged in just 100 seconds at dedicated swap stations—an efficiency game-changer for EV users. Chongqing already hosts 34 such stations, and CATL plans to expand this network to 1,000 stations across 31 cities by 2025. The infrastructure is designed to support up to 822 swaps per day per station, offering a fast, convenient alternative to conventional charging. CATL, the world's largest EV battery manufacturer, is partnering with major automakers—including Nio, Chery, GAC, SAIC, FAW, and BAIC—to integrate this technology into upcoming models. Among the vehicles adopting the Choco-SEB system are the GAC Aion S, Hongqi E-QM5, SAIC Roewe D7, BAIC C66, Wuling Bingo, and SAIC's Maxus range. While ideal for commercial fleets and taxis, this technology also has significant potential for long-distance drivers. Battery swapping stations on highways could one day rival the convenience of traditional petrol stations, making EV ownership even more practical and appealing.
