Men's Six Nations: England v ItalyDate: Sunday 9 March Kick-off: 15:00 GMT Venue: Allianz Stadium, TwickenhamCoverage: Live audio commentary via the BBC Sport website and app
Former captain Will Carling has questioned the quality and experience of England's current coaching set-up, suggesting it is preventing the team reaching their full potential.England recovered from an opening-round defeat by Ireland with dramatic one-point wins over France and Scotland, but have still been criticised for their style of play so far in the Six Nations."We do have some talented players there's no doubt and maybe we're seeing a slightly restricted version of them," Carling told BBC Radio 4's Today programme., external"You look at the calibre of the England coaching team and you have got to question whether that's the best we can put out there."Some of them are learning, some of them are very young and maybe lack the experience at Test level. Maybe that's what we're seeing impact on the players."
England head coach Steve Borthwick is leading an international team for the first time, having previously worked as an assistant with England and Japan. He also led Leicester to the Premiership title in 2022.When he took charge of England, Borthwick recruited Richard Wigglesworth and Kevin Sinfield – both of whom are less than a decade into their coaching careers - from his Tigers backroom.Defence coach Joe El-Abd is working in international rugby for the first time and splitting his time between England and second-tier French side Oyonnax until the end of the season, while, at 33, scrum coach Tom Harrison is younger than hooker Jamie George.Felix Jones, who was part of the coaching team that won back-to-back Rugby World Cups with South Africa, left England's set-up in August after only seven months in his post. Jones has now returned to work with the Springboks once more.
"I still think we're way off the potential of this team and let's just hope we start seeing that," added Carling, who was had a part-time mentoring role with England under Borthwick's predecessor Eddie Jones.England vice-captain Ellis Genge said last week former players such as Carling were "out of touch" in their criticism of the team, failing to give them due credit for turning around a run of six defeats in seven Tests earlier in the year."I wouldn't necessarily agree with him," Carling said. "A lot of ex-players are hugely experienced and have a lot of knowledge."But I understand that when you're a current player you're highly sensitive."You're trying as hard as you can to win games [and] they've had a tough run. Let's be honest, we're talking a tough run for three or four years now. That's where players have to understand people will have opinions."I remember all these times we had some very ugly wins and you watch the reaction of the media and the fans."It is a bit frustrating but you have to take a deep breath and accept that's part and parcel of it."Carling captained England 59 times, leading them to three Grand Slams and a Rugby World Cup final during the 1990s.

Ben Stokes: It's no longer just about entertainment, it's about winning

Ben Stokes has signalled a change in England's Bazball approach to Test cricket, admitting that his team's main purpose is not to entertain but to win matches. Stokes has led the transformation of England's Test side alongside head coach Brendon McCullum since he was appointed captain three years ago, playing an exciting brand of cricket and previously stating: 'We're in the entertainment business.' Now, as he prepares to lead his team into a five-match series against India, the 34-year-old has struck a more considered note, admitting that while England's gung-ho approach is effective when they are on top, they need to get better at regaining control when things are not going their way. 'We have had time to talk as a group, identify areas where we know that we are incredibly strong, but also identify areas that we think we need to get better at,' Stokes told the BBC. 'One of those areas was adapting better when we're up against the wall.

Liverpool ‘chasing England star Marc Guehi' with Bayer Leverkusen accelerating £30MILLION Jarell Quansah pursuit

LIVERPOOL are interested in signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer. And the £30million that the Reds are on the verge of receiving for Jarell Quansah could help to fund the deal. 3 3 Leverkusen are closing in on Quansah, in a deal that is separate to Liverpool 's swoop for Florian Wirtz. Reds boss Arne Slot could look to upgrade his back line by recruiting Guehi, who has just one year remaining on his Crystal Palace contract. Eagles chiefs are already looking at potential replacements for their skipper, with Sporting star Ousmane Diomande being considered. Quansah, who is currently on England duty at the U21 European Championship in Slovakia, has already agreed personal terms with Leverkusen. The defender now has his heart set on moving to Germany in search of regular first-team football. And all that now remains is for the two clubs to agree a fee. Leverkusen are yet to table an official offer for the star. Though they have been locked in talks with the Anfield chiefs and an agreement worth around £30m with a series of performance-related add-ons is close to being finalised. Alcaraz overcomes Munar marathon to reach Queen's quarters

LONDON, June 19 (Reuters) - Top seed Carlos Alcaraz was pushed all the way by fellow-Spaniard Jaume Munar in a thrilling contest before clinching a 6-4 6-7(7) 7-5 win and advanced to the Queen's Club Championships quarter-finals on Thursday. Alcaraz recently came out on top in an epic French Open final against Jannik Sinner, and while this second round clash in London may not have reached those same dizzying heights, the British crowd were served up an enthralling battle. The world number two was a break down in the deciding set but showed his strength once more as Alcaraz stretched his winning run to 15 matches, the longest streak of his career. "It was a really tough battle that we had today," Alcaraz said after more than three hours on court. "He's a great competitor and he showed how difficult it is to beat him." Alcaraz, the 2023 champion, looked well in control as he eased to take the opening set, and after saving four break and set points at 5-4 down in the second he forced Munar to a tiebreaker. The pair traded early breaks with neither player holding serve over the first four points, before a Munar double fault allowed Alcaraz to take a 5-4 lead. He smashed an ace but then hit a double fault of his own on match point. Munar made him pay this time to force a deciding set. After Alcaraz went 2-0 up, the French Open champion was broken in his next two service games and Munar went into a 4-2 lead. Alcaraz, however, was not done yet, and two more breaks of serve sealed a hard-earned victory as he continued his preparations for Wimbledon, where the Spaniard will be aiming to complete a hat-trick of triumphs. "I'm proud of the level I showed today. It's my second match on grass this year," Alcaraz said. "There were moments I struggled a lot mentally and physically. I still don't know how I'm standing here. But I'm really happy I've given myself another chance in the quarter-finals." Alcaraz will face either French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech or American Reilly Opelka. British number two Jacob Fearnley reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final with a 6-3 2-6 6-2 win over French qualifier Corentin Moutet. "I'm very happy to be in my first quarter-final, it's even better to do it here in the UK," Fearnley said. "I tried to stick to my game plan and be aggressive. I did that better in the third set and the result speaks for itself." Fearnley raced into a 3-0 lead, and while Moutet broke back, the Briton responded immediately with another break of his own to ease through the first set. Moutet did likewise in the second, sailing 3-0 ahead before breaking for a second time to clinch the set and force the decider, where Fearnley broke twice before holding serve to love to clinch victory in style. The 23-year-old will now face Jiri Lehecka after the Czech beat Canada's Gabriel Diallo 6-4 6-2.
