Republic of Ireland beaten by Slovenia in Nations League

BBC News25-02-2025

Republic of Ireland went down to a 4-0 defeat by a clinical Slovenia side in their second Uefa Nations League game. The hosts led 3-0 at the break thanks to ruthless finishing as they cut through the Irish defence and capitalised on their chances.Slovenia struck after just three minutes with Lara Prasnikar firing past Courtney Brosnan and into the top corner. The striker flicked in at the near-post to double the lead before Zara Kamsar added the third with a close-range finish. The visitors dominated the second half but failed to find the net again until substitute Nina Kajzba blasted home after 82 minutes in a rare Slovenia attack.Denise O'Sullivan went closest for the Irish by hitting the crossbar a minute later on what was a frustrating night for the team.Carla Ward started her reign as Republic of Ireland manager with a win over Turkey on Friday night but she have much to ponder after this disappointing performance.More to follow

Glasgow Warriors have developed a taste for knockout rugby under Franco Smith who has guided the squad to finals last season and the year before. If they are to make it three in a row they will need to overcome Leinster in Dublin, just about the toughest mission in club rugby at the moment. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Glasgow's United Rugby Championship crown is on the line at the Aviva in Saturday's semi-final and, just like last year, the Warriors will need to win on Irish soil if they are to reach the final. Glasgow Warriors' Josh McKay on the attack during the BKT United Rugby Championship quarter-final win over the DHL Stormers at Scotstoun. | SNS Group 'Leinster are a formidable opponent and we hugely respect what they're going to bring this week,' said Josh McKay, the Glasgow full-back, who made his comeback from injury in last week's quarter-final win over the Stormers at Scotstoun. 'I think the biggest thing now is it's finals footie, it's win or go home. There's no second shot at this. I think last weekend was a good start for us and we've shown in the play-offs last year that we can go and do it on the road. But the biggest thing is we just focus on ourselves and just worry about turning up with the right mindset and then we'll be good to go.' The New Zealander missed out through injury when Glasgow lost out in the Challenge Cup final in 2023 but helped them go all the way in 2024, playing the full 80 minutes in all three play-off games, culminating in the win over the Bulls in the URC final in South Africa. Then, as now, they beat the Stormers in the last eight before going to Limerick to take on Munster in the semis. They won that one 17-10 but it's likely to be even tougher in Dublin. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I guess we can lean in on last season a little bit but at the end of the day this is a new season,' said McKay. 'We've got a new group, everything's unfolding differently. 'It's obviously there in the back of your mind but that's not going to be enough. That's just scratching the surface. We're going to have to be very diligent in our prep this week.' Josh McKay during a Glasgow Warriors training session at Scotstoun. | SNS Group The return of McKay added some dynamism in the back field for Glasgow who have been without the hard-running full-back for much of the second half of the season. He underwent surgery on an ankle problem in February, came back for the game against Zebre but was then sidelined again when he picked up an infection around the original injury. 'It was good to be back,' he said. 'Obviously it sucks being on the sidelines and not being able to do your bit for the team, so I've just been working away in the background trying to get myself back fit, fit for contention and hopefully make an impact in these play-offs. So it was definitely good on a personal note to be back out there with the boys. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

‘Game's gone' – Fuming fans just realising how much it costs to watch Nations League despite having Prime Video

Prime time clanger 'Game's gone' – Fuming fans just realising how much it costs to watch Nations League despite having Prime Video FOOTBALL fans have been left fuming after realising how much they will need to pay to watch the Uefa Nations League. Fans would have hoped to tune in tonight to watch Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal take on Florian Wirtz's Germany in the first of the Nations League semi-finals tonight. 2 Fans are only just realising what they have to pay in order to watch the Nations League semi-finals 2 Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal face off against Leroy Sane's Germany in the first game Credit: Getty However, broadcaster Amazon Prime Video Sport had a nasty surprise for any fan wanting to watch. That is because on top of needing to have an Amazon Prime Video subscription - which costs £95 per year or £8.99 a month - fans are also being forced to pay an extra cost. Amazon announced in March that viewers would be able to watch Nations League games from £2.49, and they could be viewed without a subscription. But coming to the matches this week, fans were left furious to learn the pay-per-view policy was active, even if you already had a subscription to the streaming platform. A second said: "Amazon Prime charging £2.49 per game to watch Nations League and WC qualifiers loool we are so so cooked." A third added: "I can watch it on a stream but the fact Amazon Prime is charging £2.49 to watch a Nations League match is absurd." Another said: "£3 pay per view to watch the Nations League on Amazon Prime, a platform you already have to pay for. Games gone," alongside an edited picture of Sean Dyche saying "Utter woke nonsense". A fifth said: "Ridiculous charging £2.49 to watch Nations League football! Especially when I already pay for Amazon Prime." A sixth added: "Sorry why are Amazon charging £2.49 to watch Germany v Portugal in the Nations League when I've got Amazon Prime? What a scam." Live Germany vs Portugal: Lineups and latest updates from Nations League semi-final

Good evening and welcome to the penultimate cycle of the season that will not die, the international phase! And tonight's treat is the first of the Uefa Nations League semi-finals between hosts (for the finals tournament) Germany and 2019 winners Portugal from Munich's Allianz Arena. If you can't remember how both teams got here – no need for self-chastisement – let me remind you that Portugal won Group 1, unbeaten in six games against Croatia, Scotland and Poland, taking 14 points from four wins and two draws, an identical record to Germany's, winners of Group 3 having seen off Holland, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tomorrow France play Spain for the other place in Sunday's final and then we can move on to Gianni Infantino's ninth circle of hell, the Club World Cup. Germany, whose rebuilding phase under Julian Nagelsmann is progressing smoothly enough to make them serious contenders at next year's World Cup if they can find the right centre-forward, are missing the injured Jamal Musiala, Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck. Portugal, who seem determined to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to carry on and play at his seventh World Cup, are without only Joao Cancelo of their regular starters and have PSG's Nuno Mendes and Vitinha available after the Champions League triumph at the same stadium if they have shaken off the toll of celebration. Germany's captain Joshua Kimmich is in line to win his 100th cap tonight and if he does so he will join Lothar Matthaüs (who, for 10 years played for West Germany), Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski, Thomas Müller, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Phulipp Lahm, Jürgen Klinsmann (also West Germany), Toni Kroos, Jürgen Kohler (partly FRG), Per Mertesacker, Franz Benckenbauer (all FRG) and Thomas Hassler (partly FRG) as centurions. That's far more than I had imagined. One thing that should not thwart Kimmich is the weather, though it looks likely to be a wild evening in Munich. The German national team's account on X has issued a storm warning to fans, asking them to allow plenty of time for travel to the stadium and to bring raincoats, ponchos or small umbrellas because of the risk of 'adverse weather conditions'. Germany's national weather service has warned of the risk of torrential storms, high winds and hail throughout Bavaria. Here comes summer!
