F1 Team Preview: How Max Verstappen Can Match Michael Schumacher's Streak
Max Verstappen claimed a fourth consecutive F1 Drivers' Championship in 2024, but Red Bull Racing relinquished its Constructors' title. Can it challenge for more hardware again in 2025? You bet it can.
Here's a look at Red Bull Racing heading into the 2025 campaign:Lewis Hamilton's departure from Mercedes means Max Verstappen and Red Bull is now the longest current team/driver partnership, with 2025 the tenth season between the parties, and he is contracted through the 2028 season.
Liam Lawson (pictured) has landed the golden ticket at a front-running team after just 11 Grands Prix across two partial seasons with the junior outfit, taking the place of Sergio Perez.Presumably, Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda would get the call-up if either Verstappen or Lawson were indisposed.Christian Horner (pictured, left) has now been team principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing for a full 20 years, having survived the scandal that rocked the team in early 2024.
Advisor Helmut Marko's power has been reduced in recent years, but he remains a close ally of Verstappen.Red Bull stood down Adrian Newey early last year from direct Formula 1 involvement following confirmation of his departure, and his removal coincided with the team's drop in performance—though a correlation was dismissed by boss Horner.
Newey has since moved on to Aston Martin, and this season's RB21 will be the first car without his direct input. Red Bull is also without long-serving Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley, who will become Sauber's team principal, and he knew his way in and around a rule book.
Can Red Bull continue to be such sharp shooters without two key pillars of its management structure? The balance issues that Verstappen had complained about even during his dominant spell in 2023 rose to the fore and exposed Red Bull once rivals removed its advantage.
That left Red Bull in a sticky spot as it struggled to remedy the root cause, while troubles riding curbs—and chronic understeer—regularly frustrated Verstappen and compromised overall lap time, with the RB20 operating in a narrow window.
There's also the matter of getting more out of the second car, now occupied by Lawson, but which Perez could not get his head around for so long.Verstappen is the best all-round driver on the grid—his wet-weather win in Brazil was among the finest in history—and he can wring the neck of any car.
If the championship chase is close, expect Verstappen to once more push the boundaries of the regulations and adopt the 'cede or we collide' stance that returned when Lando Norris was a threat last year.
Lawson has limited experience and is a half-rookie so faces a steep learning curve. Going up against current-spec Verstappen is a tall order, though delivering stronger results than predecessor Sergio Perez did for much of last year is a low threshold to pass, and he is a naturally confident driver.Verstappen is Red Bull Racing's primary asset, and the team dare not consider a future without him.
Fortunately for Red Bull, Verstappen has a contract through 2028, but expect other teams—most likely Aston Martin—to test that faith if Red Bull continues to stutter on track.
If Red Bull reclaims the team crown, then Verstappen has little reason to leave, but if they don't, then doubt could begin to creep in.
There's also the looming 2026 regulations, when Red Bull will for the first time compete with its own power units, in association with Ford—so it cannot take its eye off the ball.If Red Bull can cure the balance issues that plagued the RB20, then Verstappen would slot straight in as favorite for a fifth successive world title, a feat only achieved by Michael Schumacher (2000-2004).
As for the Constructors' Championship chase, Getting Lawson up to speed in the first order of business. Avoiding the dips that turned into a terminal slump for Perez would also be a boon and greatly boost the team's prospects of reclaiming the Constructors' crown.

Ford Sets Bold Condition to Stay in Formula One Amid V8 Talks
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Ford Performance has laid out a bold condition to remain in Formula One as it partners with Red Bull Powertrains for the new era of regulations beginning in 2026. Next year marks a big reset in F1, as new cars powered by an equal ratio of electric power and internal combustion on sustainable fuels will zip through Grand Prix circuits. Given Ford's expertise in the electrification department, its partnership with Red Bull is a result of the new regulations. Though the plans for 2026 are on course, and as teams develop their challengers in full swing, discussions about the return of cars powered by V8 engines running on sustainable fuels have led many to question whether F1 cars will rely on electric power in the distant future. MoreWhile the developmental path ahead seems unclear at this stage, Ford has made it clear that it will stay in the sport as long as the cars remain electrified. Ford Performance global director Mark Rushbrook said: "For Ford Motor Company, we believe there should be some form of electrification in there. "That's part of what attracted us to the 2026 rules. It's all about that balance between the ICE and electrification. Does it need to be 50-50? No, not necessarily. "As long as we have the opportunity to contribute, to learn and to bring knowledge to our road cars, then that's ideally what we're looking for." Rushbrook confirmed that the American brand was committed to the future of the sport. He added: "That is definitely our intent. We're committed to working with all the other stakeholders for what is the right thing for the future of this sport. "Is it going to be exactly what any single manufacturer wants? No. But that's part of the process, because at the end of the day, if that discussion is exactly what we want and every other manufacturer leaves, then it's not a healthy sport either. "We know that and the other manufacturers know that as well. So you've got to work together for the good of the sport, the health of the sport and that basically means being partners off the track. "You want to race each other fiercely on the track, but you need to work together off the track." 2026 marks the first year when Red Bull will roll out its own F1 engines in collaboration with Ford, after ending a successful partnership with Honda. The Japanese automaker joined hands with Aston Martin to develop power units for cars of the new era.

‘Lawyer Up': Woman Drops Off Mercedes At Dealership For Oil Change. Then She's Told It's Totaled, Costs $27K To ‘Fix 5 Wires'
A Mercedes owner says her car was totaled after bringing it into the dealership for a simple oil change . Abby Calhoun (@ posted a viral TikTok that's accrued over 1.8 million views documenting her shock upon learning of the vehicular catastrophe. Throngs of users were stunned to hear her story. However, her experience appears to point to a little-known maintenance practice that, if ignored, could have disastrous consequences. Totaled After Service Calhoun's video begins with her walking toward a white Mercedes crossover SUV. Upon cracking open the driver's side door of the car, the clip transitions to a messy sight. An open wiring box is resting on the foot of the car, displaying a series of bundled cables. Following this, she poses in front of the camera and speaks, but the music she appends to the video drowns out her dialogue. However, an on-screen caption explains her predicament. 'Imagine dropping your car off to get serviced at the dealership & then receiving a call that it's 'totaled' or will cost $27K to fix 5 wires so you have to go collect all of your belongings out of it before the insurance company picks it up the next morning at 8am,' she writes. The puzzling situation left Calhoun wondering what went wrong with her vehicle. 'Then you just walk away with so many unanswered questions.. & so confused about what just happened,' she said. According to the TikToker, the service department at the car dealership didn't exactly delineate why her vehicle was wrecked. Furthermore, she reveals that all of this happened after a routine fluid swap, writing: 'How did it happen?? You just wanted new oil, but now you have to get a new car.' Legal Ramifications A slew of commenters who saw Calhoun's video urged her to get the law involved, including one TikTok user who claimed to be a former car tech. According to them, there wasn't any reason for any mechanic to dig up all of those cords. Moreover, they pointed out that if a tech needed to diagnose the vehicle, the OBD port would suffice. 'Imma say this with love. Lawyer up because there's no wayyyyy. As an ex live tech there was absolutely no reason for them to be in your wires. Your obd port is accessible without all that," they wrote. Someone else remarked that they were in a similar situation, which prompted them to seek legal counsel: 'As someone who had this happen to them, get a lawyer. Do not speak to anyone (especially the dealership's insurance) before you speak to a lawyer.' And then there was this TikToker who helped Calhoun set some expectations for the dealership to satisfy as a result of the apparent blunder. They wrote: 'Get a lawyer, they'll get you out of the loan or get all your money back plus some.' Unfortunately, there were other users on the application who had personal car service horror stories to share. One BMW driver claims the dealership wouldn't even take responsibility for ruining her ride: 'Been in this situation. BMW was supposed to change my oil but they locked the engine. Called and said just come get a new car because we're not fixing this.' Car Water Damage? Additionally, there were throngs of people, Calhoun included, who wanted to know what went wrong with her vehicle. A caption for the clip denotes the likely problem: water damage. The TikToker appended the following remark to her clip: 'your reminder to drain your windshield & sunroof!' At least one user was shocked to hear that there are drain holes drivers can use to remove any excess water buildup in their cars. 'Where are there drain holes? And why in my 30 years of driving have I never heard of this? Never? Ever? Who is your mechanic cuz I have questions.' Calhoun replied to the aforementioned user, indicating that this was indeed the issue with her car. Consequently, vital internal components were fried, necessitating an insurance buyout. She penned: 'I've learned that this isn't something a lot of ppl know about or even heard of until A. It happens to them or B. Someone brings it to their attention.' Watch Out for Flood Damage Hero Drives Their Pagani Utopia Through the Flooded Streets of Dubai Watch Hatchback Navigate A Flooded Road With Help From Lady Luck McLaren P1 Flooded By Hurricane Ian After Just One Week Of Ownership Flooded BMW M Roadster Gets Final Wash Before Being Dismantled She went on to state that the obscurity of the issue is what ultimately prompted her to create her clip. 'That's why I wanted to share this experience in hopes to save someone from this nightmare!' she added. Next, she gave an overview of how folks can prevent this from happening to them: 'But basically anywhere there's a window on your car there's a small drain hole somewhere close to it. That has to be cleaned out so it doesn't clog up which would allow water to fill up in your car.' Do Cars Have Drain Holes? While commenters who replied to Calhoun's clip were incredulous as to the existence of drain mechanisms, they do indeed exist. Mechanic Base , for instance, highlights how all car doors are outfitted with these sluices. The same piece includes images of where they're typically located. Oftentimes, they're right on the bottom of doors. If these holes are clogged, water buildup can occur in a vehicle, resulting in condensation accumulation, mold, and rust. Here's one example: This blog shows how to access the drain pipe in a 2005 Volvo XC90. According to the writer, they perform this procedure every few years to prevent water from leaking into their vehicle's cabin. They're able to access the tube beneath the upper jamb where the vehicle's handrest is located. Upon removing the rubber tube from the elbow piece it connects to, they're able to check for any potential blockages. Next, they piece it back together and reinstall the panel, now with a refreshed and ready-to-flow drainage system. ClickMechanic writes that a vehicle's windshield scuttle drains can become prone to clogging, especially if one parks their car under trees where foliage buildup can occur. Other areas that are rife with airborne sediment can result in a scuttle drain blockage. The outlet recommends referring to a car's owner's manual to assess how to best access the scuttle drains. Additionally, clearing them of any visible debris is also a good habit to practice. Motor1 has reached out to Calhoun and Mercedes via email for further information. Red Bull Racing And 1Password Reveal Purpose-Driven F1 Academy Livery
The bespoke livery that will run on Alisha Palmowski's car over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend At first glance, a cybersecurity company and a Formula racing series seem worlds apart. One protects data, the other burns rubber. Then, you look closer, through the lens of progress and everything clicks into place: high stakes, high speed, and a desperate mission to break down barriers that were never meant to be permanent. In the heart of Downtown Toronto, just steps from 1Password's headquarters, Red Bull Racing and their official cybersecurity partner unveiled a striking new livery for the all-female F1 Academy grid. Set to be driven by British talent Alisha Palmowski over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, the car wears its identity with pride. The design is bold yet clean—a red and blue color palette that nods to the Canadian flag and the spirit of Quebec, where the upcoming race takes place on the legendary Gilles Villeneuve circuit. 'The thing that really appealed to me was that it extended past the Oracle Red Bull Racing team and also included Alisha's team,' said Jeannie De Guzman, Chief Operating Officer of 1Password. De Guzman highlighted how both motorsport and cybersecurity have long been male-dominated spaces—and how this collaboration aims to push beyond that. 'It really sparked something in me…we're aligned on being high performers, we're aligned on winning, but we're also aligned on breaking down the barriers. And I think the fact that it hits that trifecta was really important for us." After a wildcard entry in F1 Academy in 2024, this is Alisha Palmowski's first full campaign in the series. "I think it just really shows their commitment and belief in the series," said the Briton. 'The whole design in general is a celebration,' said Palmowski. The livery itself is more than just an aesthetic, wrapped in a narrative with every motif carefully chosen to reflect themes of growth, motion, and impact. To bring that story to life, 1Password partnered with Canadian artist Kirsten McCrea, known for her bold, vibrant style. "I just really, really respect what Alisha is doing, and I really wanted the car to mirror her spirit and to celebrate how much she's defining industry conventions and how she's doing it on her own terms," said McCrea. Working closely with 1Password's Senior Creative Director, Jon Setzen, McCrea created a design that fully encapsulate the brand's aim whilst still staying true to her bold artistic style. The livery features a pattern of stylized dandelion seeds in motion radiating from behind the driver. The motif takes inspiration from the iconic Expo 67 logo and represents ambition and ideas taking flight. Ripples pour from the back wheel to represent how one woman can set powerful change in motion. For Palmowski, the symbolism is also deeply personal. She said, 'There's been so much to get used to [at F1 Academy], so many new tracks, new team and I think each of these dandelion seeds represents my growth and all the learnings that I've taken and all my gains in confidence." 'This car is by far the most interesting surface I've ever been asked to put my work on, and it was a challenge to think about the shape of it,' added McCrea. 'I'm really excited with how it turned out…I just really, really appreciate how much creative freedom they [1Password] gave me.' 'It's unapologetically funky and it sticks out and that's the beauty of it,' said De Guzman. Barriers don't fall overnight. They erode slowly, sometimes over generations, chipped away by belief. The dream of seeing a female driver at the pinnacle of motorsport still burns bright. And now, it's being fuelled with intention. 'I think what I want young girls to realize watching me, if I'm an inspiration, is that we absolutely have equal opportunity to males,' said Alisha Palmowski. 'And we deserve to be here.' That commitment is echoed by 1Password's mission. 'Creating opportunities for the next generation, doubling down on innovation—which, as a cybersecurity company, we care deeply about, and which motorsport cares deeply about too—I think there's so much crossover that it makes a ton of sense,' said De Guzman. But this isn't charity, and it's not a shortcut. 'F1 Academy is by no means a free ticket or a parachute for females to make that step,' Palmowski added. 'It's simply a stepping stone on our journey—to get the opportunity to work with Formula 1 teams, to see how they operate at the pinnacle of the sport, and to develop ourselves as drivers.' This isn't just about one driver or one season. It's about building something that lasts.
