Mild rains lashed parts of Kashmir on Wednesday bringing some relief from the hot weather conditions in the Himalayan valley. Heavy rains were yet again recorded in Jammu division. The rainfall in Kashmir was witnessed amid a severe heatwave since the second week of June. (AFP)
The meteorological centre in Srinagar said that morning rains were witnessed sporadically in some parts of the valley, including southern parts of Srinagar.
The rest of the summer capital recorded humid cloudy weather. The MeT said that Qazigund and Kokernag in Anantnag district in south Kashmir also recorded rain.
Meanwhile, the heavy rains continued in Jammu division with Katra recording a rainfall of 108.5 mm.
'In the past 24 hours, Katra recorded 108.5 mm rains, Udhampur 71.4mm, Ramban 47.5 mm, Rajouri 80 mm and Poonch 48 mm,' said MeT director, Mukhtar Ahmad in a morning update.
The rainfall in Kashmir was witnessed amid a severe heatwave since the second week of June. Srinagar city witnessed its warmest night ever in the month of June as it recorded 25 degrees Celsius temperature during Tuesday night — the highest ever in the month of June in the recorded history, and 7.9 degrees above the season's normal.
The MeT has predicted a few more days of sporadic rains. Ahmad said that there were chances of cloudy weather with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain/thundershower at many places with possibility of heavy rain at few places of Jammu division on Thursday and Friday.
'There are chances of flash floods at few vulnerable places with landslides, mudslides and shooting stones. There can also be water logging in low lying areas of plains of Jammu division & rise in water level in rivers & local Nallahs,' he said.
Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation, spraying & fertiliser application during the above period. The MeT said that there is a possibility of spells of rain and thundershowers at scattered places between June 28 and July 2.
'On July 3, hot and humid weather will return with possibility of brief showers at few places,' he said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for Delhi-NCR, including North Delhi, Central Delhi, Ghaziabad, Southwest Delhi, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Shahdara, and East Delhi for today. A yellow alert signifies the need to stay aware as potentially adverse weather could cause minor disruptions. The sky will remain generally cloudy with moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated areas and thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 kmph. No heat wave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi today. Temperatures are forecast to remain between 33-35°C (maximum) and 26-28°C (minimum). From June 27 onwards, the region will witness a generally cloudy sky with very light to light rain/thunderstorm/lightning. The relative humidity was 74 per cent at 8.30 am on Thursday. In morning, the minimum temperature was 28.6 °C , 0.7 notches above the season's average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passes through parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Conditions remain favorable for further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over more parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and remaining areas of West Uttar Pradesh within the next 24 hours. Elsewhere, yellow warnings have also been issued for East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh, Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and West Rajasthan, while orange alerts are in place for Uttarakhand, Punjab, and East Rajasthan. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Interior Karnataka, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Konkan & Goa, and parts of Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh. In the south, monsoon rains strengthened in Kerala on Thursday, flooding parts of Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur, prompting an orange alert. Chandigarh recorded its earliest monsoon onset since 2021 earlier this week.

Generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 50 kmph during storms, the IMD said. The air quality was recorded 'moderate' at 9 am on June 26, with an AQI reading of 115. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). According to the CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51–100 'satisfactory', 101–200 'moderate', 201–300 'poor', 301–400 'very poor' and 401–500 'severe'. IMD issues heavy rain alert for several states The IMD has issued a widespread weather alert forecasting heavy rainfall across several regions, including western, central, eastern, and southern India in the coming days. In Gujarat, continuous downpours led to severe waterlogging in Surat, prompting local authorities to shut schools. Streets were submerged, and several low-lying areas faced significant disruption to daily life, reported ANI. Maharashtra was also hit by heavy rain, causing the Godavari river to overflow and flood parts of Nashik. Locals waded through knee-deep water as emergency services remained on standby. In southern India, Kerala experienced intense showers, with officials closely monitoring for potential rain-related emergencies.
