
A Closer Look At Uranus's Moons Reveals a Surprising Dark Side
The moons that orbit Uranus are already known to have unusual characteristics: some are heavily cratered, others have tectonic features or a patchwork of ridges and cliffs. Using the Hubble space telescope, scientists took a closer look at the surface of Uranus's four largest moons and discovered something rather unexpected.
For the study, a team of astronomers went searching for signs of interactions between Uranus's magnetic field and its four largest moons: Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. The moons, all named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare, are all tidally locked. That means one side of the moon, the leading side, is always facing the planet, while the other one, the trailing side, always facing away from Uranus. Scientists had long assumed that the leading side would be brighter, while the trailing side would appear darker. Instead, they found it to be quite the opposite, discovering clear evidence for the darkening of the leading sides of the outer moons.
The findings, presented this week at the 246th American Astronomical Society meeting, held in Anchorage, Alaska, indicate that Uranus' magnetosphere might not interact much with its large moons, despite previous data suggesting otherwise.
'Uranus is weird, so it's always been uncertain how much the magnetic field actually interacts with its satellites,' Richard Cartwright, a researcher at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory, and principal investigator behind the new study, said in a statement.
The ice giant is indeed a certified weirdo. Uranus is tilted 98 degrees, making it the only planet in the solar system with an equator nearly at a right angle to its orbit. A single day on Uranus is around 17 hours, the amount of time it takes for the planet to rotate on its axis. The planet completes one orbit around the Sun every 84 Earth years. 'At the time of the Voyager 2 flyby [in 1986], the magnetosphere of Uranus was tilted by about 59 degrees from the orbital plane of the satellites,' Cartwright explained. 'So, there's an additional tilt to the magnetic field.'
Uranus and its magnetic field lines rotate faster than its moons orbit the planet, causing the magnetic field lines to constantly sweep past the moons. As a result, scientists believed that charged particles from the planet's magnetic field, or magnetosphere, should hit the surface of the trailing sides of the moons. Those charged particles would accumulate on the moons' trailing sides, scattering radiation and thereby making them appear darker on the side that's facing away from Uranus.
Using Hubble's ultraviolet capabilities, the scientists behind the study found that the leading and trailing hemispheres of Ariel and Umbriel are actually very similar in brightness. For Titania and Oberon, it was the opposite of what they expected. The leading hemispheres of the two outer moons were darker and redder compared to their trailing hemispheres.
The team of scientists came up with an explanation for the strange phenomenon. Uranus's irregular moons, small distant bodies with eccentric orbits, are constantly being hit by micrometeorites and ejecting some of that material into orbit around the planet. Over millions of years, that material moves inward toward the orbits of Titania and Oberon.
As the moons orbit Uranus, they pick up the dust 'much like bugs hitting the windshield of your car as you drive down a highway,' according to a statement by the Space Telescope Science Institute. All that build-up might be what's causing Titania and Oberon to appear darker and redder. 'So that supports a different explanation,' Cartwright said. 'That's dust collection. I didn't even expect to get into that hypothesis, but you know, data always surprise you.'
As for the two other moons, Ariel and Umbriel, it may be that Uranus's magnetosphere does interact with them but not in a way that's resulting in a bright and dark side. The recent discovery adds more mystery to Uranus and its system.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A pair of European satellites have created the first artificial solar eclipses by flying in precise and fancy formation, providing hours of on-demand totality for scientists. The European Space Agency released the eclipse pictures at the Paris Air Show on Monday. Launched late last year, the orbiting duo have churned out simulated solar eclipses since March while zooming tens of thousands of miles (kilometers) above Earth. Flying 492 feet (150 meters) apart, one satellite blocks the sun like the moon does during a natural total solar eclipse as the other aims its telescope at the corona, the sun's outer atmosphere that forms a crown or halo of light. It's an intricate, prolonged dance requiring extreme precision by the cube-shaped spacecraft, less than 5 feet (1.5 meters) in size. Their flying accuracy needs to be within a mere millimeter, the thickness of a fingernail. This meticulous positioning is achieved autonomously through GPS navigation, star trackers, lasers and radio links. Dubbed Proba-3, the $210 million mission has generated 10 successful solar eclipses so far during the ongoing checkout phase. The longest eclipse lasted five hours, said the Royal Observatory of Belgium's Andrei Zhukov, the lead scientist for the orbiting corona-observing telescope. He and his team are aiming for a wondrous six hours of totality per eclipse once scientific observations begin. Scientists already are thrilled by the preliminary results that show the corona without the need for any special image processing, said Zhukov. 'We almost couldn't believe our eyes,' Zhukov said in an email. 'This was the first try, and it worked. It was so incredible.' Zhukov anticipates an average of two solar eclipses per week being produced for a total of nearly 200 during the two-year mission, yielding more than 1,000 hours of totality. That will be a scientific bonanza since full solar eclipses produce just a few minutes of totality when the moon lines up perfectly between Earth and the sun — on average just once every 18 months. The sun continues to mystify scientists, especially its corona, which is hotter than the solar surface. Coronal mass ejections result in billions of tons of plasma and magnetic fields being hurled out into space. Geomagnetic storms can result, disrupting power and communication while lighting up the night sky with auroras in unexpected locales. While previous satellites have generated imitation solar eclipses — including the European Space Agency and NASA's Solar Orbiter and Soho observatory — the sun-blocking disk was always on the same spacecraft as the corona-observing telescope. What makes this mission unique, Zhukov said, is that the sun-shrouding disk and telescope are on two different satellites and therefore far apart. The distance between these two satellites will give scientists a better look at the part of the corona closest to the limb of the sun. J&J reports results from antibody combo trial for MM patients
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has reported new outcomes from the Phase II RedirecTT-1 trial of bispecific antibodies, Talvey (talquetamab-tgvs) and Tecvayli (teclistamab-cqyv) for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (r/r MM). The data showed a high overall response rate (ORR) with durability in those who have triple-class-exposed (TCE) RRMM with true extramedullary disease (EMD). In the trial, which enrolled 90 subjects, the investigational combo resulted in an ORR of 78.9%, with over half of the subjects achieving a complete response or better, representing a significant improvement over the average ORR of less than 40% for this patient group. Notably, responses were also found to be high among those previously treated with B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) CAR-T or anti-FcRH5 bispecific antibodies. According to the company, subjects in the trial showed deep and durable responses, with 66.2% remaining in response at the data cutoff and a median follow-up of 13.4 months. At one year, 61% of subjects were progression-free and alive, and 74.5% were alive, with median overall survival not yet reached. The combo was found to be consistent with prior reports of them as single agents. Subjects had the option to switch to once-a-month dosing, which might have contributed to better tolerability. The reports of cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) were found to be mostly low grade. The study's findings were featured at the 2025 European Hematology Association Congress. EMD represents a severe form of MM, where myeloma cells form tumours in soft tissues and organs.
