Luke Donald sends Ryder Cup warning to Jon Rahm amid difficult run of form - as Europe captain insists no one has 'firm assurances' of a spot in the team
Luke Donald has given Jon Rahm no assurances about his place on the European Ryder Cup team at a time when his big-stage performances have come into question.
The Spaniard, one of the stars of the win in Rome in 2023, has finished higher than 14th only once in four majors since joining LIV 18 months ago.
Although there is no realistic prospect of Donald overlooking the two-time major winner, especially with a rowdy atmosphere expected for September's match at Bethpage Black, a free pass onto the 12-strong team has not been issued.
Donald said: 'I haven't given anyone the nod. I think it's a little bit too early for that. Again, we have, very in-depth stats. We know exactly how these players are playing. We have a great idea of where they stack up against each other and against the US.
'But I certainly think it's a little too early to be giving anyone firm assurances right now. We have three majors, elevated events, plenty of other events, Rolex Series events to play. I want them to go out and feel like they go and earn it. Let's go in and play well.
'In terms of Jon, he's one of the best players in the world, and I would expect him to be on that team, but I certainly haven't given him those assurances.
Rahm has struggled for form at various Majors since he defected to LIV Golf 18 months ago
'He still needs to keep going and playing just like everyone else. Again, no assurances have been given right now.'
Doubts around Rahm's form require the extra context of knowing he has not finished outside the top 10 in a LIV event this season. That he has also not won, having finished their league in first place last season, is hardly a cause for immense concern, but it does fall beneath the standards Rahm set on traditional tours before defecting.
Among the complications for Rahm, as well as Tyrrell Hatton, is that both men could be declared ineligible if they lose appeals against paying fines to the DP World Tour accrued after their departures.
Given the DP World Tour is in no rush to push through that process prior to the Ryder Cup, it is unlikely to be an issue that keeps them from appearing in New York.
For Donald, their experience will be weighted at a premium if they fall outside of automatic qualification and rely on a pick. The atmosphere in New York is expected to be such a factor that prospective rookies might find it harder to get selected.
Donald, who will be closely monitoring his contenders at the PGA Championship this week, said: 'I think I will certainly give a little bit more importance to experience, people who have been able to handle those big moments under the most scrutiny, those major championships, people who can step up, have had chances to win or have won major championships.
'I think it's something I will definitely consider, and it will be something that could give someone an edge if they're on a very similar playing field in terms of statistics.'

Rasmus Hojlund 'must be shaking in his pants' after teammate 'overtakes' him in Danish national team
Danish media have claimed that Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund 'must be shaking in his pants' after being overtaken in the pecking order for the Danish national team. A report from Bold made the claim on Tuesday night after Denmark eased to 5-0 win in their friendly against Lithuania. That saw Hojlund benched for Monaco strike Mika Biereth, formerly of Arsenal, after he enjoyed an impressive season as he scored 13 goals in 16 appearances in Ligue 1. Biereth opened the scoring after just 12 minutes to give his side the lead while also drawing a red card as he was fouled by Edgaras Utkus. The Danish outlet described Biereth as being 'venomous' inside the box - while adding that 'Højlund must be shaking his pants by now. He has been overtaken.' That assessment of Hojlund's status in the national team came after he endured a disappointing second season in a Manchester United shirt. That came after he endured a tough second campaign for Manchester United He scored just ten goals in 49 appearances across all competitions, with just four of those coming in the Premier League. That has seen him linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Ruben Amorim increasingly going to Joshua Zirkzee as his preferred option up front. That saw the Dane give an update on his future amid talk of a possible summer transfer to Inter Milan. The Italian side - who were thumped 5-0 by PSG in the Champions League final - have made further contact with Red Devils about a permanent move for the striker. Speaking after Denmark's previously friendly, a 2-1 win over Northern Ireland on Saturday night, he told TV 2 Sport: 'I have a contract [until 2028], so I expect to play for Manchester United. 'I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. 'I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United. 'I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season.' His comments came after United are said to be keen on signing another forward. As a result, they are set to listen to suitable offers for Hojlund, who cost United £64million plus a further £8m in potential add-ons when he made the move from Atalanta back in August 2023.

Meg Nicholls ‘bags a belter' for dad Paul in £280,000 spending spree as father-daughter duo smash the sales
MEG Nicholls helped dad Paul 'bag a beauty' as the father-daughter duo went on a huge £280,000 spending spree at the sales. Sun Racing told you that legendary 14-time champion trainer Paul is enabling the help of Meg at the auctions this year. 1 The pair hit up the Goffs Arkle sale in Ireland on Tuesday and got the cheque book out in style - snapping up three hugely promising sorts. The pick of the bunch was a £130,000 gelding by champion jumps sire Walk In The Park, whose mum Lackaneen Leader was placed in a Grade 1. Meg, who combines her role as an ITV pundit with sourcing top talent, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to get him. "We got our three top picks, and thought we might have had to stretch a bit more for the Walk In The Park. "Dad actually loved him from the moment he came out of his box. "His eyes lit up really, the horse had that bit of class about him. "He's really athletic, and we can't wait to get him back and get him going. "We knew he would make this sort of money – he really is classy, he had that swagger about him, and he's by the right sire. "We've been fighting hard against some big stables and as I have got older I've found it easier to work alongside Dad! "To get some pretty smart horses at what we valued them at - I'm delighted. Now we need to find the right owners for them." The pair also bought £78,000 L'Ami Pierrot, who is related to Nicky Henderson's former multiple Grade 1 winner L'Ami Serge. Being by Nirvana Du Berlais, he also shares a sire with Lulamba, so expect him to be a speedy sort capable over hurdles. The Nicholls also went to £75,000 for an unnamed gelding by Vadamos, whose progeny include Grade 3 winner The Other Mozzie and Grade 1-placed runners such as Matata and King Of Kingsfield. Nicholls told Sun Racing he will continue to work with long-time sales ally Tom Malone. But he thought it would be beneficial having another set of eyes helping him too, hence the decision to bring in Meg. He said: "I've been hearing all sorts of rumours, Tom and I are good mates but there has never been any contract between us. "He's a freelance and he buys plenty for me, so do several others. "I'm going to work with everybody, but Megan is going to get quite a bit more involved for me. "Results could have gone better over the last few years but that's the way things are, it's very hard buying these days. "I'll keep all avenues open, but more so than ever I'd like to get Megan much more involved on that front." Muhammad Ali would still tease George Foreman about Rumble in the Jungle 40 years on after they became best friends
MUHAMMAD ALI would still tease George Foreman about their Rumble in the Jungle 40 years on - after the pair became inseparable. Ali famously defeated Foreman in Zaire - now the Democratic Republic of the Congo - in 1974 with over ONE BILLION viewers watching worldwide. 5 And he did so using his famous rope-a-dope tactic - allowing Foreman to punch himself out before winning in round eight. The build-up was bitter and the rivalry carried on post-fight to lead to what was an expected rematch. But after Foreman claimed to have died in his dressing room after losing to Jimmy Young in 1976 - he found God and retired. It also paved the way for Foreman to form a brotherhood with Ali - up until the boxing great's death in 2016. Ali's grandson, MMA star Biaggio, told SunSport: "My grandpa and George, they were very, very close. They spoke all the time. "The only memory I have with George myself was from my grandfather's 70th birthday party. "We met George there, I was 12 years old and even at 12 years old, I knew who George Foreman was. "I had seen the fight with him and Poppy and I was like, 'Oh, George Foreman, nice to meet you.' "He was such a nice guy, like super humble, down to earth and of just a very successful businessman at that point too. "So, really, that's like the only memory I have from George, but I do know that him and my grandfather, they were really close." Ali retired in 1981 after 61 fights and three heavyweight title reigns - but he was sadly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease three years later. Although that did not stop the quick-witted sports great from throwing verbal jabs to his rival-turned-friend Foreman. Biaggio, 26, revealed: "Poppy was a jokester, man. Like he would always joke about certain things. "It's crazy when I would visit him in Arizona and he'd be sitting on his like reclining chair, I would shake his hand and in my head, I'd be thinking, 'This hand knocked out George Foreman in Africa.' "Certain things like that I would reminisce in my head and then at the same time I'm like, 'But you're just my grandpa.' It was a very strange feeling my whole life really. "But yeah, they definitely had some banter, you know, Poppy was a jokester, he's always joking." Foreman made a comeback in 1987 after ten years out and became the oldest heavyweight champion of all time aged 46. I would visit him in Arizona and he'd be sitting on his like reclining chair, I would shake his hand and in my head, I'd be thinking, 'This hand knocked out George Foreman in Africa.' Biaggio Ali Walsh But the multimillionaire businessman - who made over £150million through his cooking grills - died in March at 76. Ali meanwhile passed nearly ten years prior but Biaggio - an unbeaten MMA fighter and brother Nico a professional boxer - continue on the legacy. Middleweight Nico has 12 wins, two losses and one no-contest in his 15 boxing bouts while Biaggio - a former American football prospect - is 2-0 in the cage. Biaggio - signed to the Professional Fighters League - returns on June 27 in Chicago - but wants to compete all over the world - like his grandfather before him. He said: "I wanna just fight. So, anywhere it is, that'd be great. "And I think it's cool too, you get to travel and get to see a lot of new places and stuff. I'd never been to Saudi Arabia before until I fought there. "That's what's so cool about this job, you get to travel and see new places and destinations, places you never been to. "All are possibilities, especially with the PFL, man, I love the PFL." 5 5
