Canada's Dunfee breaks 35km race walk world record
March 22 (Reuters) - Canadian Evan Dunfee broke the men's 35-kilometre race walk world record with a time of two hours, 21 minutes and 40 seconds in Dundice, Slovakia on Saturday.
Dunfee, 34, shaved seven seconds off the record set by Japan's Masatora Kawano last October, going solo from start to finish and beating his closest challenger German Christopher Linkee by three minutes behind.
Dunfee was a bronze medallist at the 50km event in the 2019 World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games.
Kawano's time had been the first to meet the world record requirements set out in 2022 when the discipline was made official.
The 35km race replaced the 50km event as a standard championship event in 2022.

Sane is also aware of interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, who are both ready to make lucrative offers to tempt him to Istanbul. German outlet Bild claim that Sane is yet to make a final decision on his future despite the fact he is set to become a free agent on July 1. But a move to London is 'appealing' to him and his wife Candice, which could put the Gunners in pole position to sign him. Sane's other options include a move to Saudi Arabia or Serie A champions Napoli but it is understood those are not overly tempting for the player. Bayern bosses are keen to keep hold of their player and have already offered him a new three-year contract, but on reduced terms. Sane rejected the offer as he is unwilling to take a pay-cut which has seen rival clubs circle. Sane has scored over 60 times throughout his time on Bayern's books - hitting double figures every season - and could add another dynamic with pace one of his great assets. He previously scored against Arsenal in his City days. Arsenal's priority this summer is on adding a new No 9 and they've made Benjamin Sesko their preferred target. They want to sign the Slovenian, who has continued his progression at RB Leipzig with the German club often selling their top talent for the right fee.

Personal terms won't be an issue but the west Londoners need to cough up the necessary cash if they want the winger by the time they head to the United States for this summer's tournament - where Dortmund will also be in action. It has been a difficult few days for the Blues with their recruitment facing several setbacks. They want a new goalkeeper and Enzo Maresca is keen on landing Mike Maignan from AC Milan, where he has just a year left to run on his contract. The Blues are also not willing to meet the Italian's asking price of more than £20m for the French goalkeeper Maignan. Their latest proposal was for a fee of around £12m. Maignan has made it clear he wants a move to Chelsea, claims The Sun, but their refusal to budge financially means they will miss out for now. None of the goalkeepers currently on Chelsea's books have been able to make the position their own which has led the club to look elsewhere. At the other end of the pitch, in an effort to bolster their forward line, the Blues had been eyeing Hugo Ekitike at Frankfurt. Sky Germany are now reporting that Chelsea have failed to reach a full agreement with the German club for the forward and have now given up completing a deal before the Club World Cup. Liverpool remain in the race for the French forward. Chelsea's only major summer arrival thus far is Liam Delap, who arrived from Ipswich for £30m. Maresca was able to land the young forward despite Manchester United also being in the race. On Monday they confirmed a deal to land Mamadou Sarr from sister club Strasbourg.
