Huge surge in Irish bookings to Rome ahead of Pope's funeral
Online travel agent On the Beach has said it saw an unprecedented rise in bookings to Rome on Tuesday, just 24 hours after the Pope passed away.
The 88-year-old died early on Easter Monday with Cardinal Kevin Farrell announcing the news via a statement released by the Vatican. It seems the Irish are seeking out a Roman holiday following the death of Pope Francis.
He said: 'At 7.35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.'
A later statement from the Vatican confirmed that the Pope died of a stroke and subsequent heart failure.
Mourners from across the globe have already gathered in their droves at St Peter's Square in Vatican City, with many hopeful to pay their respects. Now, it seems as though thousands of Irish Catholics are set to make the journey across Europe to witness the historic funeral.
Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On the Beach told Irish Travel Trade Network: 'The Pope's passing prompted an outpouring of grief around the world and what followed was a flurry of bookings to Rome.
'With the Pope's burial due on Saturday and the historic process of the conclave beginning in two weeks' time, we know that people will want to be in the heart of Italy for this historic moment. 'We're expecting bookings to rise further over the next 24 hours following Tuesday's confirmation of dates of service.'
A meeting of cardinals at the Vatican this week has now provided an update on plans for the pope's funeral.
They have confirmed it will take place on Saturday 27 April, at 9am (Irish time).
The funeral will set off a nine day mourning period, which will end in the process of choosing a new pope from 5 May.

Revenues at the four-star Parknasilla resort in Co Kerry last year increased to €12m as business for 2025 'looks to be very strong', according to the managing director of Parknasilla, Tony Daly Mr Daly was commenting on new accounts for hotel operator, Silork Ltd, which show that operating profits increased by 11% to €2.4m in 2023. Operating profits rose as revenues dipped slightly in 2023 from €11.55m to €11.52m. Mr Daly said that revenues increased to €12m for 2024 and 'we are projecting revenues of €12.5m for 2025'. He said that earnings at the firm will be down slightly in 2024 due to higher costs. Mr Daly said that Irish customers account for 78% to 80% of the hotel's client base 'and they are holding up very strong this year as are US customers which account for between 15% to 18%'. The resort is owned by billionaire Jacqui Safra and the directors state that for 2023 'turnover held steady and operating profit increased delivering a positive profit before tax for the period'. The company recorded a pre-tax profit of €1.3m after paying out interest charges of €1.09m. The profit also takes account of non-cash depreciation costs of €478,861. The pre-tax profit of €1.3m followed a pre-tax loss of €401,444 in 2022 which was mainly due to interest charges and similar charges of €2.56m for that year. Parknasilla resort comprises an 86-bedroom luxury hotel and spa along with 38 villas and 24 lodges. It also has a nine-hole golf course. In the accounts signed off on last Friday, May 30, the directors state that the US dollar loan was refinanced fully in April 2025. The company secured a new €20m loan facility to refinance existing debt. They state that a euro denominated loan replaced the US dollar loan, thereby taking away the risk of foreign exchange movements that have impacted the profitability of the company in the financial periods prior to the refinance. Numbers employed in 2023 increased from 119 to 121 and staff costs decreased from €4.02m to €3.89m. The directors state that the business enjoys high annual demand with up to 48% repeat business and has an established business with a strong national and international reputation. They said that there is ongoing investment in guest facilities, digital technology upgrades together with sustainable plant and equipment. A note said that a valuation of the entire hotel property valued its assets in October 2022 at €24m. They state that this compares with the current carrying net book value of fixed assets at €16.22m. They said that the difference would convert the balance sheet total to a significant positive balance.

Irish Rail to put on extra trains for Musgrave Park gigs
Irish Rail will run additional services for the concerts in Musgrave Park (Virgin Media Park) this week. The run of gigs starts on Thursday with Macklemore and Rudimental before The Corrs take to the stage on Friday with support from Natalie Imbruglia and Imelda May. Saturday sees the Stereophonics perform at the Ballyphehane venue. In a post on social media on Wednesday, Irish Rail confirmed that extra trains would be put on to help attendees get home from the gigs. The additional services will be in place for the Cork to Cobh route as well as the Cork to Midleton and Cork to Mallow routes. It is, as of yet, unclear if Irish Rail will put on extra trains on Saturday for fans travelling to the Munster hurling final in the Gaelic Grounds. Labour TD for Cork North Central Eoghan Kenny urged them to do so, saying: 'Rebels from across the county will be winging their way to Limerick this Saturday for what will be a fantastic game between Cork and Limerick in this year's Munster Hurling Final. 'It's a very special day in the Irish sporting calendar and will be attended by fans up and down the county, which is why I've written to Irish Rail to ask for additional rail services to be provided this weekend. 'Trains from 9.30am are totally booked out and that's before we even consider people changing the time of their return ticket. 'The demand is there and the obvious thing to do is to put on some extra services to get fans to the stadium safely so that as many people as possible can hopefully see Cork lift the Mick Mackey Cup.'

The Little Museum of Dublin reopens on St Stephen's Green after €4.3m refit
The museum had closed its temporary address on 33 Pembroke Street in May to move back into its original refurbished location. Today's official re-opening, attended by Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain, will allow visitors to enjoy an expanded and reimagined exhibition space and a new reception area. The museum will also welcome a new youth education space, an integrated lift to improve accessibility, a sun-trap patio and an enriched collection of artefacts donated by the people of Ireland. Since its first opening in 2011, the museum has welcomed over one million visitors and remains the titular placeholder for the top spot for Things To Do in Dublin, according to TripAdvisor. The reimagining of the Little Museum of Dublin was partly funded by Fáilte Ireland, along with the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts Gaeltacht, Sport & Media. Dublin City Council and private donations got renovations over the line. The museum will open seven days a week from 9.30am to 5pm and will continue to offer guided tours every forty minutes. A new walking tour, The Little Walking Tour of St Stephen's Green, will take place each afternoon at 2.15pm. The walking tours include The Official Walk of Shame, The Football Walking Tour, The Freedom of Dublin and more. Speaking at the launch, Sarah Clancy, CEO of the Little Museum of Dublin, said: 'Thanks to the generosity of the Irish people, the support of the state and the talent of our team, we have managed to reimagine the Little Museum of Dublin for generations to come. 'We are so proud to be reopening our doors and welcoming guests back into our newly renovated and accessible museum at 15 St Stephen's Green.' Lord Mayor Emma Blain added: 'I am delighted to see the Little Museum of Dublin on St Stephen's Green reopen its doors after two years. It is such a great addition to the city centre, bringing Dublin to life in a very real way.' Among the newest artefacts on display are everything from the first ever medal awarded to William Deans under the states Bravery Act 1947, to Mary McAleese's First Holy Communion Rosary beads donated by the [former] President herself. Mary Stack, Head of Product Development – Attractions at Fáilte Ireland said that projected visitor numbers are expected to rise to over 5,000 annually by 2035, with the redevelopment is set to generate an economic impact of €24.7m over the next decade.
